  1. Re:SSH Tunnel to protect VNC on Persistent Terminals For a Dedicated Computing Box? · · Score: 1

Agreed; special precautions are needed when ssh is open.

I left mine on the default port, but added an IP whitelist to my firewall rules. In the rare case that I'm not connecting from a previously-added IP, I can call my brother who'll run a local script to add my IP. I've only had to do it once, and it seemed to work well.

People can throw themselves at my ssh port all they like, they won't get through. [The old adage about inviting trouble may be appropriate here.]

Easy; plug in the Ethernet, boot a Gentoo LiveCD, and a minute after the disc access has stopped, type the following (carefully) at the assumed # prompt:

    # ifconfig eth0 [a known IP]
    # /etc/init.d/ssh start
    # passwd
[enter a password for root, twice]

SSH in from another box, and you're done! Worked fine for me, installing Gentoo on a Kanga with a broken screen from three timezones away.

Of course, it assumes that the Ethernet card is working, and that the kernel picks it up as eth0. If the network lights up but you get no joy, try a LAN-wide ping sweep; I've had to do that a coupla times when this kinda thing's cropped up.

No. It's 100% CPU, with each VM taking 25%. You can only get as much CPU power out as you put in, and virtualisation doesn't magically generate CPU from air. As the GP said, "virtualisation is not the answer to everything".

Personally, I think Bush will place the US under martial law in December: allow the vote to happen, so that the hope of a new president abounds, then crush the people's spirits in that gap between election and inauguration.

Subtle difference, but I think it'd be more effective as a tool to destroy the people.

There is a reason for those days to be missing from the calendar. In 1752, some countries switched from the Julian method of calendaring dates to the Gregorian system. By that time, the two calendars were out of step by 11 days, so those 11 days were deleted.

From what I recall, most countries had already switched some years earlier; hence, depending on where your locale is set, there'll be either 11 days missing from September 1752 or 10 days missing from October in a year I forget.

Of course, there are plenty of oddities related to this, like Sweden overcorrecting its calendar and having to add a 30th of February to compensate; or Greece not switching to Gregorian until the 20th century, and having to add something like 15 days. It's all very well documented in the Calendar FAQ, highly recommended reading if you're bored.
