This is absolutely true. C is absolutely essential to learn, but you'd do well to learn the basics of C++ as well. I've been a *NIX developer for 13 years (oh my god has it really been that long) and I've done almost exclusively C++. If you want to be employable you need to learn it. Any large-scale, multi-developer projects WILL be using it. That being said, it is such a complicated language as many posters have already pointed out. You will spend the rest of your career developing your skills in it. Here is a great set of books to get you started: http://www.amazon.com/C-Depth-Boxed-Set/dp/0201775816/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228660512&sr=1-4

Whenever I think about the prospect of the end of civilization, via a plague or climate change or what have you (and I agree, the population has increased too rapidly for the Earth to support -- something has to break), I'm always a bit torn. On the one hand, as many other posters have said, "Good riddance." There are too many people, who cares if they go away? On the other hand, think about how terrible it would be if you or someone you loved were affected -- either your whole way of life changes, or you suffer terribly before you die. Either way it's no fun. So, not having RTFA, I'd rather see someone look at mitigating the effects for individuals rather than trying to prevent some cataclysmic occurrence. Or maybe just happy drugs -- or euthanasia drugs -- for everybody.

This is one of the reasons I hated going to MIT. There were so many people who came from these high school backgrounds where they were ostracized and ignored for being nerds, and suddenly they're at MIT! Such an enlightened place! People understand me! So for some reason, people decide to act in ways that get attention from everyone around them. And when they're off campus, it's so exciting to make all the "normal" people think they're so weird! I absolutely agree with the police in this case; she was not using common sense; she just wanted to impress people with her brainyness and weirdness. I was kind of like that (although not quite that stupid!). I feel sort of bad for her; she'll never live it down, but that's what happens.

Your scheme wouldn't have saved any more headache than moving DST. Here's an article about a physicist named Lowell Wood who proposes that we spray particles into the sky to reflect sunlight, similar to what would happen after a volcano eruption. You could do some serious damage from within their infrastructures. I work for a financial company, and little bugs in Reuters' software do major damage to us -- the company can lose hundreds of thousands of dollars due to such a bug. Imagine what you could do with a more systemic attack.

If this was your goal, though, you wouldn't affect average americans who have some savings in the market. The people hurting would be hedge funds, market makers, arbitrage traders, etc. So some super rich people would lose some money. I'd almost cheer the terrorists on. Don't tell my employer.
