I love the GPL, so please don't think I'm trolling. But after reading the article (first one linked on grok) apparently the GPL does fix prices, that's a legit arguement. It really could put legit software manufacturers out of business.
It's like giving away sugar, but then saying that anything cooked with it must be given away free too. And that you can never sell the bowl you mix the ingredients in.
the way I see it, if it has a legit use (virus scan) and it let's the user know that it will be doing this. Then even though it may be spyware, it's still acceptable, that's a trade off. but it's still not a valid tool for determining a demographic, since only a certain demographic will download it to begin with.
This isn't just stupid, this is dangerous. Allowing something as potentially life saving as this to only come from one source, who hasn't even demonstrated that they're interested in creating the product described in the patent. That's just INSANE
actually I read both. my point that a computer being a prerequisite to a federal grant is exactly as unfair as a computer being a prerequiste to a federal grant. I suppose I didn't spell things out as clearly as I should have, I assumed that most people at slashdot are smart enough to understand what I was trying to say. I hope this clarifys things for you.
It seems like there would be a way to apply by mail. If not, then this doesn't matter, since you already must purchase (or acquire by other means) a computer.
"By default, when opening a folder window, the parent window closes automatically. This surprises the sort of people who will never be confident enough to investigate Nautilus's preferences, and who expect things on their own computer to stay where they left them. It is unfixably inconsistent -- it does not happen for the Computer window, or for the Desktop, or for opening documents rather than folders. And it dramatically reduces the usefulness of the file manager for managing files, as it is extremely difficult to get source and destination folders open simultaneously."
this is annoying as hell. very easy to fix, but having that as the default behavior is just stupid.
Linspire has been doing this for awhile. They're trying to make newbies as comfortable as they can, but unfortunately they're doing it by emulating even the worst ideas of that other OS.
The movie may suck completely to those of us who have read and loved the original. But odds are people who haven't read the book will love it (some of Douglas Adams genius will shine through no matter what they do) and those people may read the books and get as much joy out of them as we all have.
or maybe a "misinformed" moderation...

Or maybe they're on the second step. Since we haven't seen them come out with all guns blazing yet (the third step)
but I was under the impression that the ubuntu installer was pretty much the exacty same as the debian installer.
Or maybe the BBC misunderstands the research. Or maybe they're trying to make it simple enough for everyone to understand.

now the uber guilds will have a real world monopoly too.

I'm sure you get alot. Chicks love people who follow nerds around and harass them.

For a browser people seem to love to bash, The page is still being slowed down from all the people (probably from /.) heading over to DL it.
Do you really feel the need to cut some guy down? Or was this a troll. If it was, bravo, you certainly pissed me off.
now we just need to find some way to install linux on it
this research wasn't randomly generated
I love that term, it makes it sound like there'll be an explosion. Everyone stop buying i-pods! it's our only hope!
We've had the technology since George Washington!! We should have been there 20 decades ago!
Is there any chance of a sequal of some sorts to put in what was left out in this movie?

This guy is unbelievably picky. I haven't noticed ANY of this, and even now that he's pointed it out I still don't get why it's an issue.
yeah, but having to manage your files via the console can be annoying, since there's no root file manager
Wonder if they've updated that layout since 1995.

I used to not, but I was educated in private schools, so I was just a bit brainwashed.
