yes you are right...but no you are not.
Not worrying about performance is what brought us much of today's current bloatware. performace matters in many areas...I am a scientific software coder...but there are plenty of other applications were it matters.
And besides that you can't code in Python any faster than I can code in C++...you wanna know why? Because I probably know C++ as well or better than you know Python...the language wras really must quite. All languages have there place...my favorite language to dink around with is Ruby...would I even consider writing a large scale distributed scientific application with Ruby? Hell No.
Anyway that is nothing more than my totally worthless opinion.
"Will we finally be able to code for living in a language that's not painful? Exciting times!""
Yeah...I have been doing ti for years...I believe it is called C++.
No language is painful once you master it....well except FORTRAN.
I don't think you have to be 'hardcore' to appreciate the command line. Anyone who is a power user could probably benifit from the command line.
You are of course righ about the parents. But then I don't really believe that BeOS should be targeting the 'parents'. It is after all an OS for nerds...and a good one at that.
First I will start with an apology...I miss understood your point.
"What I have found is that no professional or education achievement assures that the bearer has a brain."
you sure got that right.
"if you do not have a powerful mind and utilize that mind in critical thought and analysis, questioning all things you encounter in life... then you are just another of the cattle; regardless of academic and professional achievement."
So very true...I girl I work with...theoretical chemist...very bright girl...has been so beat down by corp america that she simply does not care anymore...truely makes me sad.
Sadly most of us with PhD's today are not able to do the pure research that we "should" be better at. Most of us get paid to do a job everday just like everyone else...it is up to us to continue our intellectual pursiuts...often times outside the realm of our current jobs.
"A PhD may be proof of perseverence but it is only proof of hard work if the person who attained it had an IQ under 120."
Bullshit. Go get your PhD and then tell me how easy it was. You stick around school making 12,000 a year while your friends with a BS are out making a living. It is simply not that easy to get a PhD. yeah a ton of people get them because they are 'scared' of the real world...but a lot of us get them because we enjoy the are we work in. So before you get to bitching and moaning about how PhD's this and PhD's that you should at least walk a day in their shoes...remember we are more educated than most and paid less than many with half our education.
Also as an aside note...to those thinking of getting a PhD to command more money...get a clue...you get a PhD to do the work you love And to a previous poster you do not learn it all in undergrad. There is something to be said for doing pure research for 4-6 years. You take you understanding to a different level.
And for that person wanting to rip on my for my grammer and spelling....kiss my shiney white ass.
Well I work for a fortune 200 drug discovery company and we store over 5 million compounds along with various properties in a MYSQL database....oh and we even have ORACLE onsight. MYSQL is simply easier to get up and running and it is totally usefull for a good many applications. Granted it might not work for a web sight like ebay or amazon, but then I only work in the realm of chemistry.
Meanwhile back in the land of people who could care less if they see the source code to the OS that runs their computer....
Apple is coming back in a big way. They will probably have 5% market share or more by the end of the year.
Right on. I to am in the startup stage of my first company. It is to easy to get caught up in the more more more of life....part of the reason I wanted to do my own venture.
Good Luck to you.
John
"to use a fresnel lens, a normal lens would either be much too thick in the middle"
Or a perfect parabaloid mirror...aka the solar death ray....but if it was a continuous parabaloid mirror it's total output would be much much higher...truely bringning it to solar death ray status.
Hey but I am a computational chemist and have no realy clue about solar death ray's and such "child's" play....but damn it would be cool to build one...
I have a theory that gmail doesn't really give you a "true" gig of space. For instance lets say you and I and a 100,000 other people subscribe to the same newsgroup. What is keeping google from simply storing on of the messages and then distributing pointers to our accounts with the relavent information? Bandwidth perhaps...but I am willing to bet that those boy's/girls have solved many of these issues.
Just a theory mind you.
Wow. Nice post. I couldn't agree more...you do however realize that the collective slashdot crowd will probably hunt you down and burn you at the stake right?
LOL. English is my least favorite langauge to code in!!

after a day of stories like that why would you bother?

Amen to that.
hum...guess I have to agree with that.
