How about IL-2 Sturmovik and Forgotten Battles ?

Rabid fan base ? Check. I'm posting this after all.
Global fan base ? Check, I routinely see Spanish, Russian, English and Hungarian in online chat - often in the same game.
User base in the 100,000s ? Check. The developers are Russian and have sold massively in Russia. Odds are, most IL-2 players don't speak English at home.
Better than the Microsoft alternative ? - probably, haven't played CFS3 to know for sure.
Obscure topics ? - Triple check, Russia, Finland and Hungary in WW2.

The demo available now is for Il-2 and is 2 major patches out of date. It's still hella cool. Forgotten Battles upgraded things substantially in both flight modelling and graphics. No due date on the demo for FB. Just play the IL2 demo with the knowledge that the current retail product is (amazingly) a heckuva lot better.

    Check it out.

Microsoft is very fond of including moving targets in their interfaces. Win2K (Office 2K ?) introduced the "smart menus, which changed over time as you used them. So just as you learn where something is, the OS moves it. Then you have to find it all over again. The multi-rowed tabs that move suck even more, since it's in your face and moving things around while you're trying to use it.

    And combo boxes still suck.

I like the battle axe analogy.

Ket's face it. Kazaa is annoying. Sure, you can get free music. But you still have the problems of mislabelled files, low quality rips, disconnects, slow transfers, interrupted transfers, incomplete 'catalogues', scarcity of uncommon material... The list goes on and on. The BIG advantage of a commercial (B2P ?) service is that, unless Akamai goes down, the files are always Right There. It's the classic "you get what you pay for" situation.

An Apple-designed service can be expected to be well-designed, reliable, and cool. If 4 major record labels really do provide content this could take off in a major way. This could materially increase Apple's marketshare. Contrast this with Microsoft's DRM-laden plans and you'll see that there will be a clear choice

My employer pays a lot of ASCAP fees, and we have to support Limewire because we have legitimate needs for rapid access to a vast music library. The #1 question during the iTunes 'rollout' was "can I download MP3s with this ?" That answer is about to change.

No, cast Jennifer Garner as Fujiko, and then keep the name. The Japanese have been putting Japanese names on Caucasian faces (modulo hair color, which varies wildly) for so long it's time Hollywood acknowledged it.

As for Jigen, go for Christian Slater or, in the rapper-turned-action-star trend, and I'm-gonna-hate-myself-for-saying-this cast Eminem in the role.

I'd rather have Slater personally, but apallingly enough, Eminem just might work in the role. My "only" concern is he's a bit young for the role. Maybe MikeD ? On seocnd thought, definitely a Beastie Boy. (this is either +1 Insightful, +1 Funny, or -1 Wrong).

Zenigata ? Christopher Frantz, let him have FUN with a role for once.

I have no idea who could play Lupin himself.

I hadn't done any flight-sim gaming for ten years (CYAC) before I finally gave the updated IL-2 demo a try. The first one didn't grab me, but the updated demo hooked me badly on online gaming (a mix of mostly "air quake" and "hardcore settings" servers). And the demo only does 4-player online games.

Ubi has also given the lead developer, Oleg Maddox (this crazy Russian programmer), and his company a great deal of latitude in terms of free patches (several very large updates, with new planes) and communicating with fans. They have a very well-run forum, with both an official Ubi presence and fan moderators (take that however you will). Their policy seems to be very fan-centric, at least as far as IL-2 goes.

Whatever else Ubi has done, they've done the Right Thing with IL-2 (which you should try).

I'm just downloading the new video from the expanion now.
