None of what you've mentioned has been advancing gaming far. I'll give you, the increase in immersive feeling has done some for gaming, but we are reaching a limit. Increasing the look and feel only goes so far. Can you tell me that you've felt the gaming pull as hard as you used to?
I think that Free games will eventually max hardware out, but you have to remember that growth in Free Software works slower. The difference is that it is steady, and eventually passes propreitary software, which has usually moved on and is looking for profit somewhere else (look at mozilla).
My original point is that a person who is dedicated to using a 3D card in Linux in a non-propreitary manner can still get games to play that are decent. The original poster implied this wasn't true.
I think the next revolution needs to be in free content creation. This is he only way that things will move forward.
I think people need to be more creative. I think part of the reason that the DMCA dosen't get people's ire up anymore is that most people don't create content. That needs to change. We used to be a more creative world. This will help the free gaming cause.
I can see your points.
As an aside: You may want to checkout billardgl, a good use of graphics (and uses a decent amount of the graphic card).
Define up-to-date? Do you mean, same gameplay, more realistic graphics?
Please, (and I really mean this) Gaming industry, give us some kind of new game. It's just the same crap over and over and over. Like TV Sitcom's the games produced these days are stuck in a rut.
One of the problems with having a high bandwith connection is the lack of sites with good enough connectivity to take advantage of it.
I have wondered for a while now, if localized networks where the ISP provides hi-bandwidth content and advertising and easy automation with the local community, might be worthwhile.
This would allow for 2 things. Hi-bandwidth providers with less cost (it costs alot to stream hi-bandwidth to the whole internet). Localized Intranets for regionalized content (how many times have you used google to find the site for a local business?).
Perhaps this could provide part of the egg for the chicken and egg problem. A sort of "public access network".
I cannot say enough about how nice life is without TV and only a net connection and radio.
I still get current news and the like, but when people are complaining about getting inundated with stuff (christmas ads, particular news stories) I'm perfectly happy.
Try this just for a month and you'll see what I mean.
I thought I heard that originally they were going to be trying to have fuel cells that get their hydrogen off of gasoline. It sound funny, but it makes a great way to start the transition from oil.
While the "Duh" is true. I think the relavent questions are:
"How easily does a system lend itself to being upgraded out of the box, with no additional costs?"
"How quickly can a patch be developed and published"
"When I install the new patch am I going to have to accept some NEW BS license?"
I still choose Debian GNU/linux because I believe that apt-get being as easy as it is will keep newbie Linux people upgrading regularly. This alone could have significant impact.
Opinions abstractally are statements on how you see things. Just becuase I haven't used your catch phrases, dosen't make what I've said not an opinion.
I'm beginning to see your arguments as just a flame. You're using comparisons with NAZI's and using name calling.
As for buying and not making the hardware, it's true, you take a risk not making it yourself. This is why we have review sites. We look and see what the first risk takers have found. Do not confuse reviewers with companies that have found the thing that is the most profitable for them to sell. Who is Motorola indeed? Buy from the small guy you know, if you can. If you can't, try the reviews.
Also, simply stating you are making ssumptions, does not prove those assumptions right. Using your own logic, I could assume that you were a Linux user by YOUR own "piss poor arrogant attitude", but I'm going to instead assume nothing about you.
So not assuming, and based only on my observation of your comments, I'm going to reason you indeed are flaming and stop responding to you.
My last comment will simply be (my opinion) that you should resist "brand loyalty" the same way you should resist "falling in love" with a stock.
First off, I never claimed to be all knowing-- not sure where you got that idea. I'm just stating my opinions in opposition to yours.
Second. Have you ever tried flipping a coins 9 times and then perdicting the 10th outcome? Large corportations are so complex they might as well be entropy generators.
What I'm proposing is that the brand dosen't matter. Your LUCK in following a brand is meaningless, so why not follow the lowest cost?
"Brand" means something when you can tie a face to it. Otherwise, you might as well follow the lowest cost.
Who is HP anyway these days... Are they Compaq? Are they DIGITAL? Are they Bruce Perns helping out Linux, or are they HP Lawyers threatening to use the DMCA to shutdown hackers?
Who is IBM? Who is Sun? Who is Microsoft?
If Linux users only go by brand, someday they will be branded. Be wary of the large corporations. Loyalty to them will get you no loyalty from them.
Fair enough question. I think I read an article about a technique that uses randomization to create more realistic sounds. I think it's more popular than we think. (I think the artical talked about being used in TV... I wish I could find the link)
It is sad as well to think that most of the music community is "half illiterate". They can read, but can't write. How many instrument performance people actively work on honing their composition skills?
At least these skill could help them adjust to automated music some.
I sometimes wonder about the amount of people who have the talent who go on to do something else.
I usually think about a related area, music.
There's a big tie between music and mathmatics.
But yet the free music scene still seems empty.
Hrm...
Perhaps there just needs to be some reason to want to create.
This said by a guy who left violin after playing 18 years, to go do Computer Science. You could argue that I saw I didn't have what it took to make it, but I wonder how many others there are like me.
You have obviously never heard the chickenman records. The were hillarious.
It's hard to convey here, They were great.
"'mommy, why won't chicken man lay an egg'...
'well go on then, lay an egg for her'"
"Mrs Helfinger, could you look in the file labeled super chicken cave for the item super chicken cave lightswitch?"

Perhaps he uses it to play Billardgl? Perhaps the free part of Tux Racer.
I know, I bet it was to play Tux Kart
Hrm... Maybe we can't assume he's playing closed games?

IM/IRC/leet slang
How far removed is this from hacker slang?
If abbreviations are used enough they become slang.
LASER is one example.
RTFM - there are people who don't know what this stands for, but know what it means.
FUBAR
SWAG
Language is meant to evolve. Perhaps standardizing the slang and documenting it would be a better place for education.
Language is the TCP/IP of brains. Imagine if we were all stuck with one spec of TCP/IP... oh wait.. nevermind.

These companies need to see that these kinds of actions have consequences.
Have you canceled your MBNA credit cards and told them why you were canceling it?
There are plenty of other banks and Credit card compaines. Time to move your account elsewhere. And vocally explain why.
Somebody should see if the old trademark "word star" is available. That name may ring a bell with some other computer folk.
hehe.. of course.. Star Office dosen't have the old word star keys.. hrm.. maybe somebody should do that!
You have gone completely off topic.
If you wish to continue this direction, please e-mail, otherwise.. you shuold really end this (dead end) thread.
Exactally.

Good day sir.
Now you are making assumptions.
First off, I never claimed to be all knowing-- not sure where you got that idea. I'm just stating my opinions in opposition to yours.

Oh yeah...
And we shuold all buy what the grocery stores recommend, because they've evaluated for us.
Heck.. why bother looking at our stock portfolios and 401K's, obviously those financial people make good decisions.
What was wrong with those ENRON people anyway.
Come to think of it, you fit right with all the other brain dead consumers of the USA.
winelib==naitive linking.. dosen't that get anything?
Why are these requirements so much higher than the original Loki offering of Kohan?
Did you have access to the old port?
Dosen't work with the windows version?!?
Worked for me.
I was just playing internet multiplay with me on the loki version and my friend on the Windows. Hrm.
Check out Ardour.
They're trying.
As good as that is, it is still obviously not an orchestra.
Fair enough question. I think I read an article about a technique that uses randomization to create more realistic sounds. I think it's more popular than we think. (I think the artical talked about being used in TV... I wish I could find the link)
