Personally, I have one gig of memory, and I barely ever go over 512 MB usage. A more "above-average" user might get up to 700, but generally speaking, the chance that people today will get to using 2GB of memory is unlikely. Thus, it may sometimes affect a computer's preformance positively to disable swap, since some programs will swap even if you're not close to 50% RAM usage (For example, I am currently using 310MB of RAM and 123MB of swap), which slows things down since it takes time to load swapped stuff into memory.

Instead of making anything resembling a valid argument countering those in "an inconvenient truth", they resort to trying to discredit Al Gore by telling people it's "uncool" to be too intelligent and politically proactive, and that people should submit to brainless mass entertainment instead.

I'm aware of the psychological roots of this method, but I still find it detestable. Instead of arguing like an adult, the oil firms reduce themselves to the political equivalent of taunting the guy who gets high grades and/or is knowledgeable about many subjects because he's a "nerd".

  22. Is There Such a Thing as a healthy cafeteria meal? on Big Mother Is Watching · · Score: 1
In my middle school (my high school, thankfully, has no cafeteria), and, as I have learned, in other middle schools around my area, the problem is not children making bad choices, it's the school not only supplying, but supplying a plurality of and emphasizing the bad choices.

I'd go as far as saying that going through the hot food bar in my middle school was pure damage to one's health. Overgreased pizza, corn chips with fake cheese sprayed on them, fast-foody meatballs (all of these foods proudly displaying the logo and slogan of the company producing it, as to allow another way for them to advertise). Sometimes there was a small, measly salad, dwarfed by these fast food giants, trying hopelessly to pretend that it has some taste.

Luckily for me, my school had an alternate food route in the form of a sandwich stand (from which I could choose sandwiches that only had vegetables, only to get a look of surprise and the repeating question "No meat? No cheese?"), but most schools do not provide that kind of choice.

To all parents concerned about the health of their children, I suggest that instead of using such a system, simply take up the job of fixing your children's lunch (or, at high school age, have them fix their own lunch). It's a bit more work, but the nutritional benefits are amazing.

  23. Re:Artificial on Fedora Welcomes Women to FOSS · · Score: 1

GNOME let women choose whether they want to apply or not, too, but they got tons of applicants, why? Because programming community, and especially the FOSS community is alienting so women, and because society doesn't view programming as a "female" subject (I mean, really, when was the last time you saw a depiction of a female programmer in popular culture [and, moreover, of the times you did see women programmers in popular culture, how many of the times didn't involve some sort of hassle about the programmer's femininity?]). Thus, is seems less "natural" for women to go into programming projects, *especially* FOSS projects, whereas with a bit of encouragement you suddenly see that maybe there *are* female programmers, they just feel alienated by the programming (and especially FOSS) community.
