  1. Re:Hungry consumers? on PSP, PS2 Sales Skyrocket · · Score: 1

I was just pointing out that the difference in price isn't as big a deal, it's the features that you want that you're willing to shell out for. I wouldn't have bought a blu-ray player on its own at $900, but throw it in a next-gen gaming system with lots of other features, and the $500 or $600 is plenty worth it. I was really trying to make the point that being able to buy three systems for (nearly) the same as a core PS3 is irrelevant, if you have no interest in a PS2, Wii or 360.

  2. Re:Hungry consumers? on PSP, PS2 Sales Skyrocket · · Score: 1

Check your math and do your homework please. The Wii costs $250, the core Xbox 360 costs $300, and the PS2 at Best Buy goes for $190. That's $740 (or $680 if you buy your PS2 at EB). A 20GB PS3 costs $500.

Why not compare the Blu-Ray capabilities of the PS3? A blu-ray player on its own will cost you $900 - minimum! You're getting one $400 cheaper!! If you have HDTV, it's a no brainer.

  3. Torrents? on Interview Lawyers Who Defend Against RIAA Suits · · Score: 2, Interesting

Torrents seem harder to track than regular old P2P. Is there a record of people using bittorrents being sued by the RIAA? Or are they just going after sites like Kazaa? Also, if I use my wireless router and other people (strangers) are able to share my bandwith (Wi-Fi), am I liable for them using P2P software? I'm assuming that I am liable, but for a while, I didn't know that my router was broadcasting an un-secure internet signal.

Thank God Ashcroft isn't in charge over there anymore. Still, while the Republicans are in control, they'll bow to big business (and probably if the Dems get in power too). The only hope that I see is that there could be a large counter suit that would attempt to force the RIAA to stop some of their deceptive, and likely illegal, lawsuit practices.

If your name is embedded in the mp3 file, and the song somehow ends up on a friend's computer, then they'd know who to track down for illegal file sharing. It's an intriguing idea. I'm still trying to get my song files converted from WMA and AAC formats and putting them into MP3s because then I can put them on my iPod AND use them in Windows Media Center. Yahoo is absolutely correct that it doesn't help the RIAA, it just helps the technology companies force their customers to stay brand loyal. Screw them.

This is more akin to a company building a hotel (for example) with materials and practices that don't meet standard building codes. If the hotel falls apart and someone gets hurt, the company is liable. It doesn't matter if MySpace knew what was going on, the fact is they had a responsibility to protect their customers. Your analogies are completely unrelated to the topic at hand.

Do I care that you want your kids to watch a violent/sexy movie with you? Nope. If a movie like that came on TV with my parents in the room, they'd turn it off. Which is really the responsible thing, not to cut up and ruin the movie that was actually made.

  16. What about comic book movies? It's similar on Why Game Movies Stink · · Score: 1

I can empathize with people who want to see a good video game movie made. Most movies based on comic books have been embarrasingly bad. Comic book movies have less of an excuse because the plots for them have already been written. Comics actually have stories, right? They're almost like storyboards! Well, the same thing that happened to comic movies needs to happen to video game movies. You need some directors to stand up and give a damn. Sam Raimi is a huge Spider-man fan, and he's directed some great movies. Same thing with Bryan Singer and X-men and (hopefully good) Superman. In the past, it was always Judge Dread or Captain America or whatever other embarrassments they've thrown at us. Once X-men came in and told studios that 1) there's an audience, and 2) you need to respect the source material, that's when comic movies got better. Unfortunately, I agree that most video game movies will continue to be weak. You don't need a good story to sell a game. I'm excited about lots of games and don't even know or care what the plot is. How about a movie based on Battlefield 2? I just don't need a movie based on one of my games. They're as close to cinematic experiences as I want them to be.

How can you beat being able to watch TV on half a screen, then use the other half for checking e-mail, ordering a pizza, getting directions, etc? And GAMING!?!?! I'm sticking with my mouse and keyboard controls, thank you very much. The only thing not 100% perfect about my set up is that I had to make a board that my keyboard and mouse would fit on. I kinda wish there was a better way, but I'm really, really happy with the way things are. Maybe if you still have a crappy non-HD TV, you'll have a hard time reading the text on screen. Hopefully Microsoft will allow scalable text and icons for an entire window (toolbars and all), instead of just increasing the text size. Then everyone will be happy.

"Risking lives" I wonder if the article is being more sensational than factual. Disruptive to lives is more likely. Risking the lives of people's computers. Opening them up to identity theft, which is endangering their lives (I just had my CC number stolen about three weeks ago). Still, I wish America didn't assign rights equal to humans. Corporations don't have souls. They won't do what's right, only what's going to make money (or protect their interests, as in this case). We need more laws to ensure that companies act ethically. If we didn't, then they'd be allowed to pollute unabashedly, while the CEOs lived in a far away paradise. Or they'd bring back sweat shops. Now, we'll have to be forced to subject our PCs to being involuntarily infected with DRM software. It's not an ethical business practice.
