Get off that, repeating it doesn't make it any more true.

    >Other games companies eventually mimicked battle.net, and expanded on the idea.

Yes thats right. But you're trying to tell me we had 10 years of development that executives at Nintendo somehow missed. That they are still stuck in 1995 and trying to improve on the experience provided by Kali. Unlike you, I don't think they are that stupid or that ignorant. Friend codes is a feature designed for online kid safety. It is designed to limit Nintendo's liability in an unlikey case a pre-teen makes contact with an online predator. It is not a feature to make gaming more enjoyable. It is cumbersome to use and I believe you have to re-add your friends for every online wii/ds game you buy because each game generates a different friend code (stupid!).

    >Yeah, and do you remember how it worked 10 years ago? You exchanged IP addresses.

Did you actually play online games? What do you call Battle.net? Every other game either either shipped with a similar service, or with a server filter.

    >But I can also understand why a lot of people wouldn't want that, and should be able to play with their friends without being exposed to random online gamers.

Maybe its because I've actually used online services that were done right that I see friend codes for what they really are, an attempt on the part of Nintendo to placate the parents of the preschoolers who might be in their audience. Battle.net, for example, allowed private games for friends and also had options to squelch any or all online gamers in public games, and it did it all without exchanging ips. I know what you're going to say "How could they possibly have figured out a way for players to join and host games online and without exchanging ips!!" - My guess is that they had many PhDs working on the problem :s.

Besides, I've never heard anyone ask for the friend code "feature".

No its just bad and lazy. And why are you putting the xbox model as the pinnacle of online gaming? Sony doesn't charge to play online and and online gaming has been around, in a big way, for over 10 years on the PC (usually free).

    >Friend codes work well for me.

Friend codes might work well for 6 year old kids (and you), but most of us can handle being exposed to random online gamers.

    >Nothing fixes Vista because XP wasn't broken.

Before Vista came out, if the collective was to be believed, XP was pointless, because win2k was the pinnacle of Windows OS. If there's nothing wrong with XP, then use XP.

    >Musicians make money from live performances, not record sales. Records are advertisements for their live shows.

This is a stupid notion that will not die. Musicians do make money from record sales. Sometimes, their percentage is low, but thats because they probably sold the rights to publishing houses which do make money off record sales. If there was no protection on published music, musicians would not be able to do that. Indirectly or directly, lack of record sales hurts musicians.

Fact is that their works, under copyright law, are protected. Even if artists never made a dime off of recorded music, there is still the fact that pirating music is illegal, and that *only* owners of copyrighted content have a right to decide the method of distribution for their works.

    >Records are advertisements for their live shows.

No they aren't. Records are protected works. They could be used as advertisements for some artist's live shows, but thats up to the artist to decide - not you.
