and let's not forget when OS X was announced, since it was 'based' on FreeBSD everyone was saying THAT was the end of Linux on the desktop, and if anything it's gotten stronger. DISCLAIMER: I own two macs; one runs Linux, and 3 linux boxes; one is my main workstation - So in the end, we all win!;)

# Apple will offer a Developer Kit, which includes 3.6GHz Pentium 4. OS X 10.4.1 for Intel (preview release). Order today; available in two weeks. [10:48 am]
it's gonna take some getting used to, but I can't wait to see the Linux/x86 vs Mac OS X/intel speed comparisions, not to bait anyone, but while I think OS X is nice, I've never prefered it over Linux on the desk. (and BSD on the server!)
Like Debon, Groth needed a Flash player that did not -- and still does not -- exist. This time it was for a version of GNU/Linux that runs on his PowerPC-based Apple iBook.
This is exactly what I'm waiting for, it will make the ibook play just like it's x86 brothers. Current version of GPLFlash doesn't work well, unless you like your browser crashing allot.
I've joined the mailing list, and will help to test out code in prep for the alpha.
First I get e17 (or 16.9999999) installed on the iBook, and now this! Things are looking good.
As am I, however the byproduct of our approach has caused many, many deaths; of which many were inoccent civilians. Was that, or the deaths of so many 18-25 year olds in our armed forces, worth it? I love America, but I hate this war.
I disagree, I've been running Ubuntu at home for 6 months now, and I don't have to do anything. When updates are avail, you get a little icon by the clock, you click it, enter your password, and have it install/configure everything; just as Windows does, just as Mac does. While Ubuntu doesn't have all the media stuff installed by default, I think some basic instructions about how to install them via Synaptic would suffice. I just rebuilt my mom's 2.8G Dell - it was "slow" due to her using XP and collecting plenty of spyware and such. It's now an XP / Ubuntu dual boot so she can have an option to play in Linux. Yes, she's mid 60s now, and I've been on Linux for about 7 years. While I loved learning on Slack/Gentoo for my servers (now freebsd) I like not having to do anything to make my desktop work.
So, I think once setup properly (which I'd assume HP would do) Ubuntu is a perfect choice for non-techies to get into Linux on the desktop. For people with Linux exp like me, I love seeing how everything 'just works' after years of battling with apps/libs/kernels to get things just right on the desktop. I've got Ubuntu on my iBook, but would make my next purchase an HP if they bring it here in the US of A (sorry for the war everyone, we're not all brain dead over here...)
So if someone owns a gun should it be revealed for any criminal offense they commit to show that they *could* use it to kill someone? Should we include anyone who owns a knife, owns a car to run people down, owns a hammer to smash someones skull? Come on.
So if someone is intelligent enought to know how to protect him/herself, they're more likely to be a criminal? Where is 'innocent until proven guilty' these days?

"In a letter scheduled to be delivered to Google Monday..."
Did anyone else think that Google Monday read this as this was another 'Google Labs' idea? Can't imagine what 'Google Monday' would provide, but still, it's not unreasonable. I remember when everything was being renamed Yahoo*
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, why isn't everyone using Djdns? I've set it up on my home network server running FreeBSD to provide dnscache for all my boxes within 192* and thus far it's working perfectly. From Djdns' security page, it says that it's impervious to DNS poisoning (an perhaps the hack that took down google?):
"dnscache does not cache (or pass along) records outside the server's bailiwick; those records could be poisoned. Records for foo.dom, for example, are accepted only from the root servers, the dom servers, and the foo.dom servers."
"dnscache is immune to cache poisoning."
Djbdns
While I don't think I'm in the clear because of this, I feel better protected from the (unwashed;)) internet. Anyone care to comment, please do, as I've just started using this and want to know how effective it is.
bo
Sounds OT, but it's not. With the laws that are being thrown around it's amazing that anyone has any personal rights anymore. Then if the judiciary stands up for individuals rights, you have someone like DeLay screaming about it! Hypocracy.
Anyway, if you're insterested in things like MS's move, read http://hrc.org for more info.

MS denied Linux as being useable right up to the point they figured out they could make money from it, while leveraging their brand as the primary. It's a thin tightrope, and I expect them to fall a few times, but this is just the path they're FORCED to take due to the freedom that FOSS allows users.
bo
This has come up a few times lately, but I'm now running Djbdns and caching DNS directly from rootservers. I've given up on ISP's DNS staying up to date. Here are the previous threads:
The more this comes up, the more I think that I (and many others) are on the right path of running such things like this, as well as web, email servers, etc, is the right way to go. How much of the 'joe users' out there that would want to do this? Probably none, but I think it points to a niche market were some geeky types could get together and provide these services (basically anything that is outside, or *free extras* from an ISP). So DNS, web hosting, email, spam, virus, chat, etc - run by ppl that want to do that the best, and not run an ISP. Leave it to Speakeasy to run a great ISP, but leave it to others to run a great services based Co-lo. Hmmm...I would like to do that.
Thanks for the link, you're quite the first poster. Also, at the risk of being modded OT, I've seen the band Tripmaster Monkey in St. Louis maybe some 10-11 years ago. They had some fun/poppy stuff.

Instances of SCO code usage in OpenSolaris
Not that we care, but you know, we should in light of their accusations against Linux.

boRight, it's not supposed to be there, but it's simple to add. Pull up about:config:
it deserves to be Photoshopped with the 'all your base belong to us' phrase.
