I work for Canadian Radio-Televison Telecommunications Canada and to be honest with you(dirty confession), we are a Windows shop. I tried to get away with using Virtual box and was promptly spanked. I'm curious how/why Environment Canada went about using FOSS. Is it a requirement due to some specialized software? We are using web-based(intranet) tools for our work and a little Excel(simple work)/Exchange. I cringe most mornings when I have to login to my Windows machine. Any suggestions?
+1 for Diablo 3. Now that was a game I could get lost in for hours...then the girlfriend would wander home and catch me playing or sneaking off to play at night. I grew to love our couch.
You're missing the major point. But before I tell you the point, I'll give you some of my credentials.
I work for a major server security solutions company. We host over 350 servers, each one of those has about 3 VM's. I'm in charge of monitoring/maintaining those servers, ie. I'm senior admin.
We have the HIGHEST prices anywhere in Quebec, Canada. Want to know why? Too bad, I'm telling you anyways... we have the BEST bandwidth, uptime and service that money can buy. We don't sell our customers 1000000GB bandwidth because they don't need it and we don't have it. We aren't like those other providers that anticipate that they're customers will never even use 1% of what we sell them.. we sell our customers what they need.
Thats why companies like Dreamhost can survive; they offer ridiculous amounts of everything and count on you NOT to use it. And thats a fact.
I just can't understand why someone would turn like that. I certainly hope they give him something at night to sleep. What's next.... slashdot being bought out by MS? I for one DON'T welcome our new.... go to hell MS!
I get the impression are missiong an obvious alternative(s). Why not use vi, or emacs? Want multiple sessions? use emacs. Want to do a little spell checking... you got me there, I don't spell check:)
There it is, the greatest thing ever said on/. I am constantly tempted to post things that I have written about in my blog... but who the helll am I? If its any good it will be found. You sir, have made it to my friends list!
Don't knock it till you try it. I use mine on the bus and metro on my way to visit clients and I have found it to be a useful tool in increasing my productivity while outside the office.
I am naturally underweight.. or as natural as can be. I am on a diet to GAIN weight. Will I get a prize for every 5 pounds I gain? This 'scheme' seems very unfair and biased. Let's be lazy tub of lards for our entire life, then when the time is right, we make a big deal out of it and the government with reward us for losing our illgotten weight.
WTF is this world coming to. If I didn't already have an iPod, I'd be pissed.
I wish they would not waste/. front page space on these silly overclocking stories.
Just out of curiosity... what would you have the/. editors post then? Let's take off hardware because you dislike overclocking and the likes... next we'll drop any internet related topic because that might be a tad overwhelming for you. And with that, we have games and rights... let's drop games because they might be a little too fancy for you. Lastly, your rights... you don't care about rights, you want something to work and that's it. You don't want to have to vote, eat, bathe, or do anything beyond living.
Man, you've got it good. Now you can go do something other than read/.
I am so tired of people complaining about what the/. editors post. If you don't like it, go read another news source.
AHHH... I feel better now.
You are right. It seems that we [humans] can't resist the temptation alloted to us when given power. Is anyone aware of a form of goverment that is 'immune' to corruption?
The reality is(my version), is that the Canadian government is equally as corrupt as the American govt. We just don't tolerate it as much. Corruption is rampant throughout the world. Democracy=Corruption:( Atleast, that's my interpretation of it all:)
Its not so much about making money for most podcasters, it doing something fun that others will enjoy. Viacom will find some way of marketing this, either with advertisements tossed into the podcasts, or through some deal with Apple.
BTW: I like the name,'podcast'.
If any of the users have Dos experience, you could add aliases for some of the more complex features. Another nice thing that was mentioned earlier is modifiying PS2. Hope this helps.
Hope this doesn't come off as trolling, but starting anything, especially an open-source project is very demanding. I know from experience, starting a new business or venture is far from easy. Perhaps some of this startups lack essential skills required to keep them afloat, or there was no demand. One thing to be kept in mind is that many businesses fail within the first year, as previously stated.
I've read books that were about a particular person and that were also meant to show them in a positive light... well let me tell you, it was a wonder these books weren't outlawed. Steve, buddy, I think you're overreacting, but you have a rep to preserve as well.
I get the impression that this will violate man people's right. Correct me if I'm wrong though. I think that this added 'feature' will encourage more informed users to migrate to another OS... Is this the straw that breaks Microsofts back? Time will tell.
You may want to pick up a cheap soldering kit and practice on a few cheap USB keys/Thumb Drives. See if you can get those to work with a little repair(after you mess them up a little). If all goes well, try it on your expensive device. Good luck.
I get the impression that these slim clients will require atleast 512MB ram, 2.0GHZ, and no less then 1GB for base installation... but maybe that's my impression after adventuring into the land of Window's...
Very cool. I would love to work in that department. Keep up the good work.

....but does it have pictures and draw in the line colour pages?
And if I lose my face what happens? No more TV?

I just wanted to know if anyone has had a chance to confirm if this works. I am not able to personally test it. Thank you.
