fortunatly the cable companies will still broadcast the analogue signal so that our old TVs won't become a waste with cable. This is still a dumb idea. Mandating consumer change to keep up with industry will only hurt the industry in the end.
This is just one more reason (no wait, that is three more) to boycott Vista when it hits the shelf. Tell Dell, HP, Toshiba, etc. that you don't want to buy an new PC with it. XP is just fine.
Yes, we do talk about what they do on the Internet. We have also averted hazards because they come to me and say "Dad, I did this and that happened. Could we look at the logs and see how I did that so that I don't do it again?" or, "I was online with person X and he typed in the vulgar F. I don't like it. Could you help me deal with that?" By having those logs they know I am watching and it holds them accountable.
Oh, by the way, they can see my logs as well as my wife so, we can hold each other accountable. Anything less would be totally stupid.
This is real simple issue. You monitor everything they do on the computer. I have been using CyberSitter for a couple of years and every web page, URL, IM, and email goes into the logs that are in my email box everyday. It shows when on and off and I check the login/logout times against the system logs (perl works great to do this automatically). They do not have admin rights (except when I give them certain games to play and then I am in the same room).
The rules are simple: BE A PARENT! Kids have no right to privacy when it comes to areas that can cause them harm.
Only one question applies here. Why? Why is virtualizaition so interesting besides being "interesting"? What will it do to make or save the anyone money or time? In laymens terms: why should anyone care?
Here is the loss that is referred to: To purchase an adequate PC with Windows OS I will be force to pay at lease $100 more with Vista than I did with XP. If I am replacing an older computer, I should be able to port the OS and save even more but, will be forced to purchase something I don't want and don't need to get what I do need. This is the M$ legacy of monopolistic behavior.
Your Government in Action! A corporation would never take such a loss. Until this and other waste stops in the government, I am going to stop paying taxes. It is not right that I should be forced pay to line other's pockets.
The only innovation capable by the Chinese Government is to breed cheap labor and they even manage to screw that up. They copy a CPU design, call it there own and say it is groundbreaking, low cost computing. Oh, the chip was obsoleted in the US years ago. They have no concept of creating anything in technology. They can only copy something old.
My two sons, both serious and dedicated gamers, can't wait for the Wii. Why? Because it is both affordable and fun. They play their WOW, BF2, Guild Wars, and the like but still end up on the GameCube at the end of the day. Nintendo is doing the right thing. The really right thing!
The only thing they are drawing attention to is the rest of the world now knows that California is a state full of idiots, morons, and dolts who don't have a clue!. Unfortunatly, I have a niece that lives there who has little choice but to be there (she is just a dolt).
The main problem with Vista is that "there is nothing new invented here". All of the applications in use today cannot be improved by going to 64 bit (accept a small set of engineering & scientific apps). Nobody can name a single benifit of Vista for Internet usage, playing music or watching movies.
We have had 64 bit WinXP for quite a while and there is a void of anything special to run under it, except for a couple of games.
The only people who NEED Vista is M$ to charge more for the end product and increase profits (or just keep them going). It provides no benefit to the consumer at all.
When M$ can invent something new and productive, then it will be good.
If you consider what more than 80% of computer useres do, you can compare the two. More than 80% of computer users will gain nothing from an Apple over a $400 Dell. They will be able to browse the internet, email and listen to music without a single difference in experience. Oh, except that they will have more money in thier wallet.
This "Apple vs the rest of us" mentality is the kind of snobbery that keeps Apple's share of the industry down (the price helps too). I have spent half the money on my PC to edit video (professionaly) than my freinds who have done the same with Apple. The funnier part is that I produce better quality in less time as well.
Now, if you look closely, you will see that those polluting our ears with the concept that humans are causing the global warming are government funded research studies. This keeps them self serving. Private studies swing to the truth.
All of my files "play for sure". I do not have any problems with incompatibility. I have no DRM in any files. If I have to buy it with DRM, that is removed first, then I have "play for sure"
Buy the CD - RIP - Play for sure EVERYWHERE for EVERYONE!
Besides be an absolutely absurd concept, there is not practicality to a "space elevator". On the practical side this is laughable.

My kids love me when I setup gaurdrails!
Agreed. The U.S. invented the Internet and should maintian the control over it.

FUD, FUD, FUD, and more FUD.
The sky is falling and you can't do a damn thing about it!

I dare the IRS to come after me!

Counterpoint:
Many professors would like students to explore and experiment in college rather than cram in as much as possible at top speed
Translation:
We want to have plenty of oportunity to fill his mind with as much liberal mush as possible. We must not let him think for himself!

Just one more reason I won't buy a XBOX!
I manage hundreds of PCs without any malware problems. This is because of third party security! Who will protect consumers on Vista? M$? I think not!
Vista is dead before it even arrives. What would I possibly want it for that I don't already have?

The educational system has nothing to do with this. His parents failed him, more specifically, his father.
And then, the disk stops selling because you won't buy the garbage.
Yea, but this could be worse. We could have Gore (not a clue about anything). G.W. was the least of the evils to choose from.
There is a whole lot of money to be made by extortion. RIAA is a perfect example of legalized extortion.
