The tablet is sort of like AppleTV in that it ends up begging the question "Just who exactly is this aimed at?" With netbooks, smartphones, etc. on the low end and full-blown laptops on the high end, I just can't picture a big market for a $1000 tablet PC. Who is going to pay $1000 for an underpowered laptop just because it has a touchscreen? Unless they have some more surprises up their sleeve, I just can't picture the market for this thing.

With all these flamebait mods, I can't help but picture a legion of hipster-wannabe Mac fanboys with mod points glaring at their MacBook screens, caressing their iPhones like rosaries, all mumbling "How DARE they insult Father Steve!!!" in unison in every juice bar in America.

This is an absurd scenario. Jobs doesn't need to kill anyone. He learned long ago that his fanatical followers will happily kill *themselves* at the slightest hint of his displeasure.

Even if Europa does contain such life (and that is still a VERY big "if"), the effort to pinpoint it and drill down to it would be a helluva lot more trouble than sending any little probe to Mars. That's *way* beyond NASA's budget or ambitions. Admittedly, it would be no more or less pointless than any of their other money-sinks, but don't hold your breath.

Last time I played, WoW was NOTHING like you described. It was divided into servers and if you went to the capital city the only people you saw there were the people playing on that one particular server. Eve is *way* more like what you're describing that WoW (unless you're intentionally being sarcastic).

Make sure and try them out in store before you buy them (or commit). I thought I would prefer a real keyboard too, until I tried out one with a real keyboard vs. one with a touch keyboard. I found the touch keyboard on the Eris MUCH easier to use than the slide-out tactile keyboard on the Motorola Droid.

  17. Re:I'm not surprised on Android Phone Demand Up 250%, iPhone Down · · Score: 1

I got an HTC Eris last week. Best Buy had them for free with contract. Verizon coverage blows AT&T out of the water around here. So it was really a no-brainer. The iPhone was hot in its day, but it's nothing particularly special now technology-wise and it's forever hampered by AT&T's notorious network reputation.

That's all well and good until you run into a particularly desperate or pushy salesman. Then it's not *MY* social skills that are the problem. And, yes I feel sorry for most of the salesmen there (who are forced to ask all this stuff). But it doesn't make it any less annoying (especially when you're in a hurry and just want to buy something and get the hell out there).

Which is exactly why we should end this "first" bullshit in the first place (no pun intended). The fact is that most great accomplishments in history are the result of the hard work of a lot of people working together, on the backbone of the work of generations of predecessors, spurned by the occasional advances of individual brilliant minds, and rarely limited to any one country. Both the Australian plane and the American one were built on the work of the Wright Brothers, whose three-axis control innovation was also dependent on decades of glider innovations an developments in the internal combustion engine needed to build an actual working plane (developments which spanned the continents).
