Sadly the Qu'ran at least can actualy be interpreted as being in favour of science and research (remember how advanced the Arabic world was when europe was going through the dark ages? now the arabic world is in its dark age and europe is keeping the scientific light alive), but that interpretation is out of political favour in many parts of the middle-east right now.
Similarly the large number of Jesuit scientists should be enough to show that at least some parts of christianity can be seen to be in favour of scientific research (science afterall is the only thing that can let you see god's own handwriting in creation).
Just to point out that it can be quite beneficial to have a slight pause before submenus open - it prevents button-bounce from causing you to select the first item in the menu immediately instead of having a chance to choose one... yes I have had that problem personaly when menu delays weren't setup correctly in a program and it was a real sumbitch to use the damned thing.
Moral of the story: best and most usable interface design is not necessarily obvious at first glance.
We need to realize that there isn't really all that much difference between medieval people and modern people. All the "depraved" acts of our modern times existed then just as they do now.
Not some of the ones which require special equipment;)
In 1995 the average person in japan may not have had a cell-phone - but I'm fairly sure that a substantial number of them did, remember that Japan was a very early adopter of this kind of technology.
... that european companies shouldn't obey America when it violates highly cherished european concepts like social welfare, lack of the death penalty, and the fact that you can't patent software?
If you are an employee of an education establlishment then sleeping with a fully consenting adult member of the student body whom you yourself have little or no professional contact with might be considered moral but unethical.
Actual comment from one of my friends upon seeing an inland revenue poster telling us when tax-returns are due in - "aren't tax returns just for the self-employed?".
I'm 22, have been in full-time education all my life bar 3 months, and have had a lot of part-time jobs. My tax was always deducted directly from my pay before I got it - when it transpired that due to my short-time at the job I might have payed too much tax they actualy wrote and told me! That's how a tax system aught to work.
Ignoring the fact that the United Kingdom didn't exist yet this still wouldn't be true. The colonies were considered to be just that, colonies. British owned foreign soil was not legaly the same as British soil - diffferent laws applied and people born there were not automaticly eligible for british citizenship.
I very much hope the same is true of Gates and microsoft;)
Much as the man himself seems a decent enough philantropist right now, and I have no desire to see him dead, the company he started is bad for innovation in a number of big ways, and it would be a good thing sif it ended with him.
CenterICQ for some inexplicable reason seems to take twice as long as Gnome.
On a reasonably modern system Gentoo takes 1, maybe 2 days at most to set up, and that's stage 1. Stage 3 takes an afternoon at most and is every bit as good unless you have some very odd requirements.
Actualy... the Senate begged him to be King, and he said no every time. He never accepted the crown - it was the suspicion that he would eventualy that led to his being assassinated.
Contrary to popular belief Caius Iulius Caesar was never "Emperor", the most he ever was was Dictator (which was a traditional position that the Romans would appoint at times of national emergency).
I'd say there was a huge difference in that punk was an inclusive movement followed by persons of (mostly) low income. Punk clothes were cheap and often home-made - creative use of household objects (such as safety pins) was regarded positively:)
Chav is about wearing the most expensive. The most jewelry, the most expensive designer clothes, having the best phone, etc...
... I'm marking a pile of work handed in by 2nd year university students studying mathematics. Instead of giving numerical grades and seeing how good or bad the little chavlets have done we are required to avoid disheartening them by grading them on the following scale:
E - Excelent - Tried every question and got most of them mostly right.
G - Good - Tried most of the questions and got them mostly right.
S - Satisfactory - Tried some of the questions, didn't get everything wrong.
U - Unsatisfactory - Didn't bother to hand in, or got absolutely everything wrong
Yeah. This is at one of the better Universities around in the UK (though not one of the best). If schools are as bad (and they are) is it any wonder?
Seems to match my experience from a few years back.
If you're ever in London, I suggest dropping by the Imperial College Science Fiction Society at Imperial College, in South Kensington - very similar kind of social settup for people of University age.
That's because it wasn't, they just heard the rumours and figured "hey, that's a pretty good idea actualy". :)

So, which of the 50 normal united states aren't eligible in order to make space for Australia, the UK, Switzerland, etc ...?
Is it just me or does cadu, based upon that post, fail the Turing test? :)
Not some of the ones which require special equipment ;)
Apparantly not.

By that reasoning, NetBSD or Solaris would be better still :)

People who drive that badly when sober probably shouldn't be driving at all. Cars are dangerous, driving tests exist for a reason.

A few others as well as Oxbridge and Durham, most notably Wye College in Kent (which is tiny and mostly pointless, but is very very old).

Bloody Americans, always thinking that 100 years is a long time.
Or indeed an alternative to the many preexisting Linux distros.

It may seem like a trivial difference, but legaly it's a huge distinction.

Realy Chav is more like Yuppie than Punk.
