In addition to the water and/or polyurethane protection, I've read about magnetic shielding. Both are doable but definitely have big problems either way.
The former two are heavy. I think the thickness was described in meters. For magnetic, the only way to have the ship compact enough yet could repel particles quick enough means incredible high magnetic fields. The crew would also be subject to this unless there was two systems in play (one to deflect, other to cancel out that one) which would raise power requirements, weight, etc. Also, this wouldn't provide protection from neutrons or other chargeless particles nor particles that would be attracted to the high magnetic field. I forget if it was better to deflect electrons or protons.
Sounds perfect for commercial passenger flight. After holding people hostage in the air for a week, being hold up on the ground for another day won't seem as bad.
If the US president refers to "British Petroleum" when lambasting them, should the British remind Barack Hussein Obama that Union Carbide was an "American" company?
As an American, I say YES. The affected area is pretty much a superfund site and Warren Anderson is still a free man in the US. Dow Chemical Company, which bought Union Carbide, still hasn't paid up what UC owed to the survivors. The injustice is boggling.
This would mean sea-faring pirates which have commandeered the drilling rig to turn it into a floating trading post with card games and women who will have sex for money.
If aliens can move about the galaxy freely, the ships would have to be large to hold a sustained, reproducing population. That means they can move lots of mass. Hello, asteroid bombardment.
If they can move at greater speeds, then they can do the same with whatever solids they find floating about. Hello, relativistic bombardment.
I find myself infatuated with Fantastic Contraption. It seems simple enough but once I got through the levels and was able to view other player's designs, I'm just staring at my computer muttering, "No fucking way.... Ju- oh what. the. fuck?"
People can communicate effectively without it. I say that Facebook merely lowers the bar as did everything else before.
I mean, culture has changed, too, but whenever some old letter (Civil War, etc.) makes the news, I'm always in awe at the prose. Telegraphs made things quicker. You still had to plan ahead but rather than taking weeks and months, it'd be, what, sent nigh instantly, recorded, and delivered within a week?
But the phone brought us real time conversations. It's all shoot from the hip though it does help if you have some semblence of what you'd like to talk about.
Email? Back to letters but pretty much instant and has no limit. Pack in as much audio, images, or movies as you feel like doing.
Twitter? Sort of announcements-lite. No more dealing with windbag press conferences. Oh, looky. Shortened URL to the transcript of said conference.
Facebook? In a word, automated. Grumblystuff is feeling grumpy. Would you like to send him a cute puppy picture? You just uploaded a vacation photo. All your friends know you went camping in the mountains. Profile updated. Single now? Aww, I'm sorry to hear that. Alert! Alert! It's your friend's birthday! Click hear to send a card and an e-gift.
Anyway, what I'm getting at is that it is a way to communicate but I'd hardly call it the most effective. It's very good at keeping people abreast with whatever life is throwing at yah but that still requires you to do the updates (I'm sure that'll be changed in Facebook 2.0) making it the same as everything else.
I was looking at it in a very idealized and probably naive way.
The LHC guys won't be looking for a new job if they don't produce a Higgs boson. They'll be pouring over the data they recorded and racking their brains trying to figure out what it means.
OTOH, the corporate scientist may have quite a bit of trouble telling management that their products are resulting in long, costly, painful deaths. That's not good for the company's bottomline.
They just have to turn it into a game. The rating system is a start but can obviously be gamed. Definitely don't want to include tech support forums though.
Level 1 forum user: Can post only once every 15 minutes for a total of 6 per day. Can create topics only once an hour for a total of 2 per day. Cannot rate posts yet.
2-4 lowers post cooldown by 1 minute per level. Levels 3 and 5 grants 1 additional post each. Level 5 grants 1 more topic.
And, you know, go from there. If your posts are reported or downrated enough, a mod will swing by and check them out. If you posted stuff you shouldn't have, you might only be bumped down a level or two (or however much seems fitting). If you're just a complete asshole, forum and game ban.
Well, yeah, you can ignore multiple characters but here's the rub: The ignore list is short.
Last I remember it was limited to 49 characters. I think they might have upped it but I'm not sure. Also note that you can now play with players from other realms in your battlegroup and they're working to expand that even more.
All this and a person can make a total of 50 characters (10 max per realm).
What they need to do is have an ignore account option. If someone is being an ass in trade with a level 1, I don't want to play with their 80s or any other character they have at any other level.
When RealID was rolled out, they said it's for friends and family and people you trust.
But you have to trust all of your friends' friends. You know, people who may or may not be friends, family, and anyone else you know.
You could ignore that and never be able to chat across games, servers, or factions.
With the forums, there is no opt-in. You post, you're name is revealed. From the sound of it, you don't need to be logged in to the website to see people's real names. They're doing this to... what'd they say again? Bring responsibility and accountability to posters? To prevent trolling? Chilling effect is what I believe it's called.
A community manager offered his name to placate the masses. This has led to a new word: Whippled. Definition: Trying to ease the worries expressed by your captive audience only to show that those worries are well founded.
Others still are saying they will opt-out and never post on the forums. That's nice but it's not ending here. Oh, far from it. They've got a deal with Facebook and, by the looks of it, they're going ahead full steam.
Also sex.

Free reign. Duh.
This would mean sea-faring pirates which have commandeered the drilling rig to turn it into a floating trading post with card games and women who will have sex for money.
Protection? Gonna have to go with obscurity.

Scroll down a bit to the excerpt from The Killing Star. http://www.projectrho.com/rocket/rocket3x2.html#rbomb
'course, that's just annihilation. I don't really see the point of conquering. ...unless they think we're pretty tasty but even that seems unlikely.
There was plenty wrong with the BOP and at least the managers above the workers knew about it.

Simple. Awesome.
Simply awesome.
Yeah, but it's contaminated with lead and diethylene glycol.
Well... that depends how many lives he has.
Anyway, I look forward to Youtube videos of all the limits of the AI being exposed or having it beg to be shutdown rather than deal with 4channers.

I dunno. Ballmer might whip out his Zune and try to squirt the tykes.

Being paid to research is far different from being paid to produce a specific result.
No need to even have words. Just use sounds and you can use something like this to drive them crazy trying to understand it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZXcRqFmFa8
Ah, but we know where it is. We just go the other way. We'll have to move off in 4-5 billion years and will have a 7 billion year head start.
Hmm. Only 7 billion years after our sun turns into a red giant.
Ideally, we'll have moved off this rock and/or moved the rock itself by then.

STOP TOUCHING MY MONITOR.
Yes, caps are like yelling. That was my intention.
So... it's not worth canceling over yet.
I definitely had fun playing the game and enjoyed the friends I made there but this RealID stuff isn't stopping here. They have big plans: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2010/05/blizzard-and-facebooks-friendly-social-networking-deal-launches-with-starcraft-ii-/1
It's amazingly stupid. Everyone can see the writing on the wall but they're still trying to act sly and ease everyone in.
"Don't worry! It's only for people you know and trust and for trolls!"
And your friends' friends and they have your friends.
