    Which is why the legitimate security professional testing an active website has a letter signed by a company officer allowing them to do so.

    In fact, I plan to send a large number of emails to security professionals hiring them to hack my website and send me a report of what they find.

    No. Rush is a wingnut, but I will defend to the death his right to be a wingnut. We have a First Amendment for a reason, and the reason is to prevent the FCC from implementing the "Fairness Doctrine" or any other limit on free speech, including equal time, government oversight, or making him wear a yellow star.

    If they want to prevent the takeover of the media by single points of view, why don't they enforce tighter limits on station ownership?

    For telecom companies acting like predators you don't have to go that far. AT&T was the original giant monopoly that had to be broken up by the feds for stifling competition. They owned the network, the equipment, all services, support, even the phone books.

    What the article entirely misses is that a license is only as restrictive as the licensors wish to pursue it. If someone decides to release closed-source modified BSD code, who is going to write a check to a lawyer to stop them?

    Heavy I/O = writing 100 blocks/sec * 512 bytes * 7 years * 365.25 days * 24 hours * 3600 seconds / 32e9 = 353 complete writes (assuming load leveling). Allowed number of writes = 100,000 or 1,000,000 so I think you are safe.

    The metric system was devised in the 18th century with the prefixes kilo, mega and giga. Just because some lazy asshat decided that 1024 was "close enough" to 1000 when talking about computer memory doesn't mean everyone else has to follow suit. Hard disks have been using K = 1000 since before processors standardized on binary arithmetic.

    Flash filesystems avoid writes to reduce wear on the flash, so there should be more dirty data in memory at shutdown time, not less. And since writing to flash is slower than writing to disk, hibernate should take longer.

    I remember doing some electrical work at an amusement park while I was in high school, and realizing that I was doing a better job than whoever had worked on it before me. At least when I was done the metal box was connected to ground instead of hot.

    Unions seem to work pretty well for doctors and lawyers. They prevent untrained people from practicing, require exams, and prevent abuses. They just don't call them unions.

    OTOH anyone can use the title Software Engineer, no training level is required, no exams, and no method of removing incompetents (other than promotion to management, of course).

    Yes. And after we catch the Exeter rapist we can use that same RFID system to identify people protesting the government, people associating with known or suspected criminals, people buying things that are disturbing, and people who are different from other people.
