How does only allowing only one type of MOVIE to be played on a system have anything to do with gaming?
By forcing the consumer to pay for a feature that they neither want or need.
Gamers want games. Games do not need BluRay (yet). At least with Xbox360 it is still a choice (by making it so they can still support BluRay if Sony does the impossible and wins this format war.)
How many people plan on buying a wii with 1 controller, anyone? Didn't think so, that'll be $60 for each other player.
Well, me for one, Family already has 4 GC controllers.
How many people plan on playing VC or GC games on the wii, anyone? Yeah, that's $20 for each player.
No it is Zero per player. My entire GC library will be playable Free. Sony,Ms, maybe some games? VC games are per console. Better Still you can carry them with you on the STANDARD SD memory card to your friends house.
How much space of memory you think the wii comes with, enough? Well you can all ways "choose" to buy an extra sd card.
Or I could use one of the cards that I already own for my mp3player, cameras, USBDrives
Hope you enjoy being $500 to $700 poorer. I'm spending my 3 bills on 1 console, 1 game.
This should have been a really easy case in which prove a lack of harm to the marketplace: simply copy the GPL software released by IBM, Red Hat, and Novell onto a DVD, write your own label on the disk with a Sharpie (Sam's Software Stack, perhaps?) and then sell it to someone right there in the court room and ask the judge and the defendants if there is anything in the GPL license or the law which makes that act illegal. Case closed.
Ahem, please remove all copyrighted artwork and trademarks before redistributing.
But your point is well taken, The playing field is leveller(?) than ever, and I believe the Judges were able to come to that conclusion.
GPL wins in court, was there really ever any doubt? Uncertainty? Fear?
Feeling a little pollyanna after recent events?, maybe.
I have noticed (to much LOLing this morning) that nearly every article on/. is tagged with "itsatrap"... what gives? Doesn't this kinda defeat the purpose of the tagging system in the first place? At the very least, it was highly amusing to see every article tagged with "itsatrap." Maybe we should lobby slashdot to legitimize it with an admiral ackbar icon.
I have noticed that nearly every article tagged itsatrap is accompanied by someone complaining about it.
What are you trying to get out of releasing it? Warm fuzzies? If so, then sorry, you're just going to be committing business suicide. If there are specific gains you're looking to make, then perhaps.
Quality Product for the customer?
Increased Talent Pool?
Is Owning the source an attractive benefit of "obscure embedded software" to the customer?
Your comments seem to be discouraging someone who is thinking of becoming the somebody else who has found it worth their time to come up with a solution and provide a common good.
OP, My advice to your company, is change almost nothing but the license and add the source to your products CD. Charge the market value for your software+support for 1 yr. Include support with product for 6 months. Basicly what's wrong with your current model?
You must be dilligent, you must be responsive. If you are, you are a tiny trolltech. If you are not, yo lose it all. (How different is this from before?)
This question comes up so often, Is it really this hard to understand?
1. Do Work
2. Sell Work
3. Get Paid
Ahh, but you forget that most Xmas Consumers are parents.
Now, the (generally speaking) uninformed parent, absolutely must have a console. Do you think this parent will pick up a wii, a ps2+4games, or a PS3, or an Xbox360?
Informed parents are few. However, Even armed with the knowledge that Jr doesn't have a console and reeeeaaaaalllly wants a SONY PS3, the chances of them bringing home a PS3 this year are nil to none. As an informed parent, I feel compelled to offer my advice.
A wii is attractive but they may have been told by jr not to buy a wii. Sony people are like that. Note to Parents: After the initial letdown of not getting the ps3, Your child will be pleased, and so might you.
Same true for the Xbox360, besides I'm not spending that much for something I know he doesn't want. Note to parents out there: Gears of War + 360 is a suitable replacement until PS3 Stock is in.
PS2 for non console owners (remember more kids get console age every year) seems almost a no brainer, especially for the rabid ps3 wanter. Note to parents: even though everything I said is perfectly logical, Your PS3 wanting child will be pissed when he opens that Sony box and finds a PS2 even with 4 new games. Expect to be explaining how you couldn't even get it off Ebay for 3 times the price for the first week.
Happy Hunting. I'm still pulling for Nintendo. Hey Democrats won, anything can happen.
Kudos again to Google for taking the practical customer oriented approach, and trying to allay the fears of the tinfoil hat crowd. It won't, but Kudos for trying.
There's still a 30-year moratorium on Monty Python sketch recital. It's been observed to cause virginity.
Hope it works better on my daughter than it did for me. At 10 this month, she can recite her favorites word for word with mimic like inflection. (Eric the Half Bee)
How many times do I have to say this?
Ahem...
strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is NO basis for a system of government.
You cannot just call yourself Senator just because some watery tart tossed a sword at you.
I mean, if I went round, calling myself Congressman, just because some moistened bink lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away.
Title hould Read: Worst Christmas Ever for Gadgets in the UK
Here in the US all these gadgets will be here. Good Luck laying your hands on one of those overpriced-ForcednewMedia-PS3s though.
Speaking of the PS3. I just realized this High Price, Low Volume, pre order only console strategy is a valid strategy. A strategy to sqeeze one more Xmas out of the PS2. Selling at 129 for the slimline/bundle, it is the Wii's only real competition. And they managed to sneak it up on us. And I thought they were Idiots.
Maybe you won't use it, and bully for you. At 3.33+ hours a day I'm guessing you're doing a lot of flipping which you're not gonna get from any pay-per-download service. My tv watching is more of the 5-6 shows per week variety. Using your math thats $24 a month for me. So, FOR ME, thats actually fairly innovative and saves me money.
3.33 Purchases a Day != 3.33 Hours a day. With Music Videos and "half hour" comedy that can come to less than an hour assuming you aren't forced to watch 8minutes of commercials per show. (I would have to say my TV is on more than 3.33hrs a day, just not watching it for that amount of time. And Yes I Flip between things that are not Adverts.)
I don't know where all the discussion of music sites and mp3 players came from, I thought we were talking xbox360 and tv/movie downloads. But without checking I'll believe you that iTunes has a better selection that MSN music. Also, Lowes is closer to my house than Home Depot... so theres that.
I can only base my assumptions on past experience from a company. If you want to think maybe this time it will be different, well good luck to you.
From a broader perspective, I love on demand services, I use them frequently on cable and the internet. I watch more than 3 hrs a day of tv in my home, split pretty evenly between my wife and I. I pay less attention to her shows and she pays less attention to mine. But on any given day you can count on both of us watching an hour of Simpsons a good day. That plus the DailyShow, PBS and BBC news is already 3hrs. To each their own.
Phrased as "The Cable Bill / Netflix Killer" it has a much brighter future. I'm not saying thats going to happen, we have to see what kind of content selection and price they're going to offer. But as I said somewhere else, if they're able to provide me with the majority of the TV shows I watch and a decent movie selection (all in HD hopefully) then sure I'll shell out for that instead and save my $100/month Dish and Netflix accounts.
Phrase it however you want. They will charge you not per Show or Season but per Episode (With Commercials no doubt). At that rate your $100 is not gonna go very far. Mine won't. even at a buck a piece, in a month that's roughly 3.333_ shows a day. Movies will be tiered, so it will probably be much worse than your current cost. Selection is another issue. Go to MSN music (Play-ForSome) and compare thier selection with itunes to give you some idea. (You better hurry though you only have until Nov 13)
I have TimeWarner (Brighthouse) with on demand (for most channells) and maybe 12 movie channells for less than $100 a month. No way, I'd give it up to pay MS on a per episode basis.
I don't want to appear biased, (but I am) I think it was the best for all of us when MS went to console market. The 360 looks great and I hear mostly good things about its games. But services like this remind me of all the MS products littering the technological scrap heap. (Not to mention my garage, WebTV, MSN companion, etc. I even have a space for a ZUNE to be filled obsolete music player. ) I would take this into consideration before you help them fold up two more good alternative companies.
Can we the developers get around this little snag, by getting OPENSUSE to distribute our code? Thus putting it under protection from patent infringement and GPL, to be used by all others?
By forcing the consumer to pay for a feature that they neither want or need.

Tag it appropriately.
Doing so would be admitting to breaking Federal Voting Laws, not to mention several State and County Election Laws.
Diebolds only hope is a complete and transparent Redesign.

Best use of this meme, this year.
Then tag it more appropriately.
and it's a flagrant abuse of the tagging system. Come on people, this isn't digg.
No it's the proper use, obviously enough people agreed that it may in fact beatrap. Heed their tags or no, you were warned.

Another Brilliant Innovation brought to us by Microsoft.
