With such low launch stock, Sony is losing sales during a period when the hype around the console at its highest. Nintendo on the other hand plan to ship four million Wii consoles this year, giving them a three million lead over the PS3 by the year end.
Day 2 and Sony is in 3rd place. I believe I called this one months ago.
Sony Computer Entertainment America couldn't be more pleased with the response we have seen from consumers since the launch of PlayStation 3 on Friday," said corporate communications boss David Karraker. "This truly demonstrates the power of the PlayStation brand and further validates our belief that consumers see real value in an entertainment system that will define the next decade of digital entertainment.
Translation: We love it when people are shooting each other for an overpriced piece of hype. It truly demonstrates the power of PR and short supplies.
I would hate not having these choices available to me. I consistently dismiss dumbed down interfaces and simplified UI (cough*Gnome*Cough)
I need all my linux media players.
I need my keyboard shortcuts, but I do not expect your uncle to use them.
I like the competition that choices encourage and abhor the thought of that going away in order to make the system easier for someone who has not invested 20yrs of study into Computers and Software.
There is a reason why the Mac has some market share but not the whole market.
Don't bother. I know. Each additional choice makes complete sense until you find yourself explaining to your uncle that he has to choose between 15 different ways to turn off a laptop.
You could do what most of us do, Tell your uncle to close the laptop.
Teach the simplest explanation as the only explanation. As time goes by you can then recommend new ways of doing these same tasks. For example: Choose File->Exit to quit. BTW you can use AltF4 to quit or just X-it. Can be confusing to users.
I tell my Students Exit the application. If they ask how I say choose File->exit. If they see me using the application and notice I never move the mouse and ask. I will take the time to show them more ways to accomplish the same task.
Christa Stewens, family minister for the conservative-led state of Bavaria, called for a nationwide ban on war games like paintball and laser tag, in which players hunt down and pretend to kill each other with guns firing paint balls or laser beams.
"The federal government must finally ban (simulated) killer games... Bavaria has had such a ban in place since 2002," Stewens said in a statement.
Paintball and LaserTag, Simulated Deathmatch, OK maybe not fit for minors. I laserTagged my way through 1985 never made me want to kill anyone, but I can almost see her point.
She added that children should also be prevented from playing violent computer games.
Restricting M rated games to people of Mature Age is also acceptable.
The federal government has so far refused to ban such games.
Ahh, the system works.
The opposition Greens warned against banning violent computer and war games.
Opposition? Soory, here in the US we don't allow such things.
Volker Beck, a leading Greens member of parliament, said it would be better to focus the debate on the proper use of computers and not jump to conclusions before it was clear what motivated Bastian B.
Clear Heads working in government, I am shocked. Now I know why we call'em foriegners.
This 18yr old was due in court for weapons violations. Hmmmm. I wonder what his otivations could be. Notice no call for banning the weapons and explosions he used. Maybe they should just mandate that every teen must be laid at least once before graduation, as long as we are talking about motivation.
This is almost word for word what the fear mongers where saying about XP. Yes software activation is a pain. But so are pirated copies of windows sold as being legit. Which is what this is trying to stop. Yes there will be cracks and work arounds, there allways are.
We were not fear mongers, we were MS customers who went to tech shows and heard/read the proposals for WGA and reacted appropriately. I give credit to MS for at least backing off those tactics due to customer disgust (At least in the OS, they kept most of the draconian WGA crap in Office). But it placed a sour taste in my mouth and I have stopped going to their tech summits and buying/using their software wherever possible.
This is not a new Idea, we should react the same way we did last time. Let them know it Smells like Bullshit. Legitimate customers should not be accused of being pirates merely because their clocks are set incorrectly (Current WGA).
Bottom line, if you dont like it dont use it.
Good Advice, Don't Use it.
For the non geeks this is a good thing as is the whole bundle of software signing and certs that Microsoft is trying to get out there.
This is most certainly not a good thing. How many out of date certs have you seen in the last 2 yrs? I want software that works, without having to prove where I got it. Is there a study or chart showing the number of negative WGA's that correlate with XP sales? No but I bet there is a direct correllation with hacked XP's with the advent of WGA. Hacked XPs are a much bigger security risk than pirated copies of Genuine XP. You see this right?
Thank FSM that I'm not judged by my wife, I mean I love her, but I'd hate to think you judged the quality of my computer advice based on my wifes religous/moral beliefs.
I loath Ms Office. As an MIS, I cannot justify the liscencing cost to roll out new versions. Version incompatability was the straw that broke my back back in 2000.
Contrast that with the cost of explaining that OO does in fact have the feature that they are used to. Finding that feature and teaching it to the user. OO wins everytime.
If only there was a windows based Outlook Replacement. (Evolution looks perfect but on win32 it's just not ready.) Thunderbird needs a bigger staff. Google, can we get a little help?
The only way I would reccomend a switch back, is for MS to change to a subscription based model for Office. Even then I would be reluctant. There is something very satisfying about "free" tools.
I overheard this snippet from the Production Manager and the Chief Engineer. The Open Tools do fine but don't support the PowerUser.
My response was to ask what "power user" task they could not accomplish that they needed, and who here thinks they are more of a power user than me.
Note: The actual complaint was a csv import into Spreadsheet. 2 second solution. The only real complaint I have not been able to resolve successfully was a mailmerge issue.
Alright, Alright, that sounds all very intellectual and all but...
Personally I repeat jokes that may be obscure and before the time of some of these newer geeks, in the hope that they will ask "Hunh?" and try to discover the source of the material for the first time.
That being said the 1. 2. 3.Profit meme does not hold that possibility.
It is the geek version of the arist0crats. But you have to put in your own funny bits. If you are not going to make it clever then why bother?.
HD-DVD, BluRay Media & Players
New Consumers, the ones who don't remember The Format Wars of Yore(TM) and who happen to be affluent, will pickup these devices and media but not in enough numbers to save the format. Kind of like the people who bought the UMD concept not remembering MiniDisc travesty.
PS enthusiasts will buy the PS3 but not many movies. PSP rerun
DVD is "good enough" for most consumers. Plus the selection will be 2 million DVD titles to 50 hdDVD and 100 BluRay.
The only thing that may save them is the universal players that the 2 big players don't want.
I have a 15yr old 32" TV and a 15 yr old 27" (oddly enough both Sony) in another room. One has a DVD, One has GameCube (soon to be replaced with a Wii) Both have cable boxes.
On Demand Cable, On demand Gaming, On Demand DVD. Hmmm do I really need to overspend on a new HDTV and expensive as hell player plus overpriced new media, No thanks, If I want high definition I turn on the PC. where the HD media lives anyway.
Here's hoping for a slow and painful death to both new Formats and perhaps one of the producers.
With open source, there is no intellectual property.
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Copyrights and Trademarks fall under that bastard term Intellectual Property and you get to keep them.
Anyone can use it and all your ideas become public domain.
Wrong. Open Source != Public Domain. Anyone you distribute it to can use, modify/improve and distribute it, if they give the same rights to whom they distribute it. Even Playing field.
If nobody can make money from it, there will be no development and open source software quickly becomes outdated...
Wrong. a.If the code is not useful it is not used/maintained and becomes outdated. b. If you do make money from useful OpenSource code (as many do, IBM/Apple/Nokia/Sun/RedHat/Novell ), you should use it to maintain your codebase. c. Ever hear of Dual-Liscencing?
As a programmer, if I can write good code, why should I give it away?
1. If you want to horde your superior code away go ahead. 2. Aren't you a government employee? shouldn't you contibute to the common good of your people?
In summary, You appear to be misinformed, ignorant or waiting for an MS Handout. (BTW, if the latter were the case, you get handouts faster from MS for using open source rather than by bashing it.)
Glad the new Thai government is already advertising its idiots, I was afraid they'd be hard to spot.
Just ask Mattel with their 2006 HyperScan game console.
I saw this monstrosity set up at a walmart, Fully playable with the scan card laying about and though, I got a few minutes, apparently you need an hour to start playing, I left after 20 minutes without ever actually playing anything. (XMEN Fighting game, Graphics were late Genesis quality, Gameplay who knows)
You'd think it was loading off a cd rom drive from a 486 era machine instead of a 1 second scan.

and Yes it would.

I can't wait, I'm sick of all these unqualified Pac-Man players always gobbling the power pellets first.
Now I gotta go search the MS Vista thread to get his opinion of GOW.
Little note to author: Blue = Games Section, even in reply
Tagline: Wii would like to play with you.
Yes, but She deserves to be on the list and on PBS.
Or Darryl Hannah
How much did you pay for your console?
Nintendo sends you a new Wii you send yours back. See a difference? You have 3 days without online capability. But no real downtime.
How much is a Wii? How is it possible that Ms can't afford the same capability as Nintendo?
We were not fear mongers, we were MS customers who went to tech shows and heard/read the proposals for WGA and reacted appropriately.
