Any policeman with a gun strapped to his side is an inititial, immediate threat. The fact that it's impossible to trust them, even to do what is in their best interests, makes any situation where you are near one more volatile. The fact that police unions across the country still cater to Harry Anslingers beliefs, a man who died 60 years ago, over any conceivable application of American liberties or ideals, shows that not a single man with a badge can be trusted. Any encounter with the police must be realized to perhaps be the last thing you will experience as a living human being on this planet. There is no compromise, they can, and will terminate you as a sentient being for any reason at their own whim, and even though you will be dead, they will face no accountability by their peers.

Then again, sometimes things said in the campaign are forgotten during their term. It may be for the better if non-votes got some weight, it's like saying all of these candidates disgust me why would I vote for one of these. Or it's just being complacent, in which case your non-vote could count as approval, like for the incumbent or his party. It's pretty easy getting to the voting booth where I live, but with those long lines in lots of parts of the country, those people's non-votes due to inconvenience would have counted too.

Not sure what Microsoft was thinking, not including NFS and ftp support in "Home Premium" but wanting another $100 for "Ultimate" which is targeted to "power users". Eventutally they sent out a tech to my place, he saw with his eyes what I'd told dozens of people and called in and it was working right the same day. To make it even more infuriating the dozens and dozens of people I'd spoken with were all in call centers, had no way to identify themselves, and refused to admit they had a supervisor. If DSL wasn't more reliable than cable here...alas. Besides I'd wasted so much of my time (and had had to upgrade my new cell phone from a different company's minutes 3 times), it was just more convienient to stay with AT&T. Never received a sinsere apology, they never admitted that they had done anything wrong. The AT&T tech support guys are pretty great people though. The American car manufacturers know that people WILL buy crap cars, even though the Japanese companies who manufacture cars in the USA for sale in the USA have a better, more reliable, and cheaper product. The American car companies are so big and such a influential part of American society that they know there is no hurry to make a better car, or to help society, they are just concerned with profits, and know that the government will bail them out if neccessary. In this case, Sony is the huge company that knows that the people they are marketing root-kitted cds to (teenagers) will always buy their product, and the only reason they are trying to cover up is because they stunk up their image enough to where they are losing money. $12 million dollars? I thought they were losing billions of dollars a year to pirates. In any case, in my opinion Sony is just trying to keep their reputation clean, as there are still a lot of competitors to them who compete against the "Sony" name, they could care less what sort of drivel they market to teenagers, obviously.

I haven't let a Microsoft or Apple program dirty up my personal computer in about 5 years, so I'm pretty confident that at least 95% of what is running on my computer is open source. But maybe this company will be able to find some big companies to whom $5000 isn't a big deal compared to their profits, and the more power to them. Their 42-point certification is a little suspect to me, but I'd assume they think they can find enough marks to support hiring on a couple salesmen who can make this load of crap seem like a good idea to the right companies. Who knows heh. No need to try to find a nefarious purpose behind this, I don't think. Hey, I'd say it'd be one of those programs that you'd download just for laughs, besides the fact they obviously spent some man hours and are intending to spend some time keeping their database up to date. Of course, being a Gentoo junkie, I wonder how hard it'd be, just set up the portage tree, identify the very small percentage of non-open-source, and sortof go from there. I think after hearing the same ridiculous problems over and over from people, and from 10 years of previous personal experience running windows, that it's fair to say that your computer just rebooting IS "just normal Windows" and I do not think it's lying at all. Listening to Republicans bash bash bash Democrats for not making noise about the electronic voting when it worked in their favor for a change is absolutely absurd. For one thing it's only been a couple of days since the elections. You are completely out of your mind if you think that Democrats are going to be screaming at the top of their lungs that "We Won!!!! The election was rigged!!!!" For another thing, the CEO of Diebold isn't Democratic and didn't gaurantee a Democratic victory.

But the clincher, for me, is that the morning after the 2004 Election a very important family member of mine was bitching to high heaven that the Democrats would force a recount and would drag it out into December again. I listened to Kerry's speech conceding the election, then went to this family member. He absolutely refused to believe it. He was just bash bash bashing the "evil liberals" and refused to believe that they would do the honorable thing.

Republicans, admit it. Half the time your talking points about the evil liberals are more a mirror reflection of what you do yourselves, and your recent complaining about the Democrats not taking electronic voting because they are now in power is a perfect example of that. I for one hope that you again are making yourself look like fools, and this will be proven when congress finally actually does tackle the issue of electronic voting, SOMETHING CONGRESS DIDN'T DO WHEN YOUR "HOMIES" WERE IN POWER.

That being said do we really have to be so confrontational all the time? Aren't we all Americans and like living here? I'd really appreciate it if we could try to get along and conduct rational discussions and actually work together to make this a better place for a change. As far as the Korean team goes, I believe the show said the Soviets got their hands on most of that.

Of course at the time Japan was pretty much under siege and the only forseeable way to transport such a bomb would be to sneak it in by ship... pretty much impossible I'd think.
