  1. Re:For Language Enthusiasts on Draft Scheme Standard R6RS Released · · Score: 1

R6RS has exceptions and records. It has continuations, and some implementations provide threads (this is not something that belongs in the standard). It has hash tables. Also, the GP stated he recommends PLT, which already has all of these.

Scheme is a great language for teaching how to program. Knowing that is far more important than knowing the details of any particular language... these things can be picked up as needed.

  3. Re:142 page PDF... on Draft Scheme Standard R6RS Released · · Score: 3, Insightful

This is only distributing until you remember that almost every implementation has to implement something similar, often in a way that's slightly different and incompatible with everything else. I'll agree that there is a danger, yes.

However, I personally feel that R6RS is nearly at the perfect point. It is still very heavily leaning towards simplicity and clarity, but includes the bits that everyone ends up implementing anyway in non-standard ways. The truth is that modern unix systems are ugly, i/o is complicated, and a lack of a standard macro system (see the syntax-case variants) is horribly annoying. R6RS does reflect all of this, but I think trying to cleanly negate issues is far better than simply ignoring them. There are a few things that I think overreach, but I'm very happy with 95% of the additions. This is a standard we can make use of for the next 10-20 years.

  9. Not a real concern on Hack Mac OS X With Installer Packages · · Score: 2, Informative

On almost any system today, including Linux, OpenBSD, OS X, etc, software has far too much power. Even if I'm not logged in as an admin user, I could download an application, run it, have it trash my user folder, add some things to my .profile, etc. The truth is that the current 'security' on just about every system out there is a joke if you consider intentionally running a (secretly) malicious application a security problem. I absolutely do, but in the grand scheme of things, if Installer asks for a password or not on OS X to do things as root is not much of a concern compared to the gaping holes already there. Should it be fixed? Yes. Is it a major problem? No.

The iMac is supposed to be a small, silent computer (and it is). Perhaps faster cards were put off due to heat issues. It might simply be a case of going with what they know as well. If they konw the 7600GT works perfectly and the drivers are all sorted, perhaps they figure it isn't worth another round of QA to get an extra 15% speed boost at this time. Or perhaps they just have a really good deal on them. In either case, the price is amazing, so I can't complain. The high-end 17" costs as much as it would for me to build it. Add in the resale value of a nice iMac 2-3 years down the road, and it is significantly cheaper. Then add in the student Applecare option for $119... I'd be really stupid to build my own. Plus the saved 10+ hours of part selection, ordering, assembly, troubleshooting, OS loading... and then there's OS X...

If your HD dies, put a new one in, boot from the OS X CD, and select the restorable image -- It'll put everything back as it was no problem.
