  9. OMG, Really? on Cables Show US Seeks Assange · · Score: 1

The US is more intent on silliness like this; they've cut budgets massively for anything to do with space, science, technology - and put more towards war, "defense spending", "security spending" - and moreso even towards protecting the "rights" of monster corporations (including the RIAA and all that that entails). Not surprising in the least - and most "netizens" already knew this from the beginning; regardless of the spew that spouts forth from the US government's media machine - along with their Australian cousin. Yet another sign of the decline of the US's government, and their failure at striving for greatness. Oh, yeah, ditto for the Australian government. What's with all those "secret" treaties the Aussies have signed with the Department of Homeland Security and the likes? Hmmm....

There are more than enough people and resources behind each and every bill brought up before the Senate and/or Congress. There is more than enough study and research behind the scenes. Playing out "ignorance" in any respect is merely a show, merely another part of the "smoke and mirrors" game. The unfortunate advantage of the intelligent "netizens" is that we DO know, we DO have facts, we DO have experience and in general, it's those of us that helped to build what is called "The Internet" - old school BBS Sysops and hackers and the likes - that are speaking out - and we're the one's that actually understand the entire paradigm. This, to me, is mere BS marketing.

  16. Egads...Gnome 1.4.6 all over again... on Ask Slashdot: Why Aren't You Running KDE? · · Score: 1

There are things you just "get used to" - actions, window actions, menu actions, whatever. For me, I've seen just the basic "ergonomics" broken again and again - along with the "artistic" bits and bobs - I've grown to use my linux machines a very particular way (via the GUI) and have my druthers to stick to certain visual perspectives along with "usability" perspectives. Gnome3/Unity truly killed that (what - every thing is now classed as a netbook or mobile device?) for me. KDE, since the break from 3.5, killed me there. XFce has always been there, but still, lacking in a way or so...Enlightenment has been awesome, but buggy, not complete. C'mon - I just want to DO, not to "keep trying". MS Windows lost out years ago with Win95 - coming from an OS/2 and *nix background. Now I'm on OSX - I *keep* trying to "live the dream" but it's too much effort. Things should have evolved to be "easy" and they're only evolving to what some corporate mind THINKS is ergonomic. Get real. Gnome2 was very useable and was very much of the "I just work" mentality...took me a while to love it, but I do, and hate to see it die (it at least gives me the perception that my desktop computer is a desktop computer with two monitors and all the power and applications at hand). I have things to do, and if the window manager doesn't allow me to do them, well, it's ditched and I'll just do it myself. I have to thank Ubuntu and Unity for my recent switch to OSX...done and not going back...

Lovely that. So now the Department of Homeland Security - with this new bit of "permission" - can literally extradite anyone and everyone they wish - based on accusation - to be held for unknown amounts of time on US soil - with no hope of defense or fair trial? I came to Australia because I had hopes it would remain relatively free of "US imposed rule". I feel sorry for the Australians that don't have a clue as to what this means exactly. I feel sorry for those ruled over by the US government that don't have a clue as to what this means exactly. I feel remorse that I am still a US citizen, and that people will judge me by my government's actions; and I feel fear merely for the fact that I may no longer speak freely with the threat of the DHS looking for insurgents like myself. It's a pity that the US government has been allowed to descend to the horrible depths it's gone to - by the American People.

I honestly believe that Americans should "shut up" about their petrol costs - especially in the news - as it causes other folks in other countries a fair whack of ire and derision - and more often than not, it highlights the fact that the US government focuses far too much on gaining petrol resources in the Middle East and elsewhere - a facade of "Democracy" hiding resource greed and corporate favouritism.
