Doesn't every college have a 'let's get more woman in science and math' program set up by the various diversicrats roaming untamed at our nation's higher institutions? Look at the measures harvard has taken this year! Something like $50 mill and a seat just below the dean whose main function is to beancount gender? They aren't alone. i think there are plenty of forces at work actively encouraging woman to go into comp sci. I will admit the MTV does work as a counterforce.

Yes it will drive american wages down, but compared to the global marketplace american wages are a tad high. And yes the cost of living in the US is higher than india, so that is part of the reason. The same forces that will drive US wages down, such as cheap labor in India - will drive the cost of goods in this country down as well (see wal mart). But, the private sector eventually catches up and passes the government by.
The stories from New Orleans were all fabricated. None of that stuff happened. Your vision of a world of people running around killing each other over his/her inventions is a pessimistic and unrealistic view. Shall I start to list all the things government did not invent?

But the point here is not that space exploration is bad, or science is bad or we are bad at science or we shouldn't invest in science. The point is Government is bad at science. Government is bad at running a multi-hundred billion science program. Government is inefficient. Government is bad at ensuring safety and reliabilty.

What we need is less government involvement, whether it is domestic government or foreign governments. Yes, japan, china and india can help stem the costs - private japanese, indian and chinese firms. Not more mismanaging governments. Other space exploration will just be run by the same types that run the UN. Gross incompetence, malfeasance and inefficiency.

You take that 2.7 gpa in Chemistry or Physics to people like me and you won't have a problem. American businesses are able to adjust to accommodate Indian engineers, I think they can adjust to the changing ways of teaching at American colleges.

And yes, we know some teachers speak English that is inscrutable. Yes, we know that other majors are the gravy train. Yes, we know about the 30 or 50 point grading curve and ambiguous partial credit. Yes, we know about low-skilled TAs given responsibilities way over their head. Yes, we know about oversized classes, low personalized attention and limited office-hours. And yes, if you are the hard-working science and math whiz you say you are, we will be able to figure it out and hire and pay you accordingly. Just tell it like it is, and don't worry.

"Search is a force for peace and a better world"
it makes me queasy. Google will occassionally drop a 'world peace' or some other over-the-top remark. That gives me grave concerns. Their business is search, not world peace. Who doesn't want peace? Its good intentions, but not exactly realistic in a world of despot thugs, theocracy and terrorism. A disconnect from the facts-of-life from a senior exec on that scale always give me pause. As long as Google sticks to search, thats fine.
