It never ceases to amaze me how even geeks insist there's nothing to worry about because you can disable telemetry.
Geeks are smart, and they usually understand the pervasiveness of these technologies.
When geeks insist there is nothing to worry about, it is usually because they have some kind of vested interest in the technology being accepted.
Just look at the softball puff pieces that have been put out in the last 15 years about things like Facebook or smartphones or Alexa.
No, a lot of geeks just want their money, and they don't care about you or your privacy concerns.
It's more than that -- it's about intelligent interaction not just with the road but with other "brains" so to speak where the rules and modes of interaction are infinite
Don't be a smart-ass, it says "Amazon Web Services" is part of Amazon. Unlike dozens of unrelated companies with "Amazon" in their name (the UK-only search returns ~400, like Amazon Tech, Amazon Cars, Amazon Enterprise etc).
If my ISP starts fiddling with my connection I'll pick another ISP. Remember buying internet access is a voluntary transaction between two parties if you don't like the service pick someone else.
There are a lot of scientists with low or lacking ethics. They believe because they are scientists they can only do good and hence doing anything for grants is quite acceptable. Incidentally, you will also find quite a few that fake results and publish outright lies in this group.
So this is like the zillionith article/. has had about how bad smart tvs are.
We all know this.
I'm currently using an old dumb tv, connected to hdmi to linux mint, and it works great.
However, when looking for a replacement the pickings are quite thin.
Sure, a "non-smart" display can be purchased from Dell or somesuch, but they are incredibly pricey compared to the giveaway deals on "smart" tvs.
What do people reccomend for a dumb(smart) tv?
As the AC has pointed out, the reality is that many people aren't going to be able to afford the subscription based model we are moving into.
People already are having a hard enough time paying their cell bill.
The subscription model is doable for those of us who can afford it, but even then it is a suckers game, having to pay all these monthly costs for various services, content, etc; The American public is getting milked dry.
From statistics I've read, people in the US are actually staying at jobs longer than they were 25 or more years ago.
However, in the IT/Development world it is different situation.
From what I've heard anecdotally and in job interviews it appears that employers expect people to bounce around.
Some employers almost expect hires to last 1-3 years and then move on.
My old house had a hand-nailed woodwork lattice and plaster over it.
I grew up in an old Victorian like that.
Between the framed lathe and plaster interior walls and the exterior brick wall was a space anywhere between 6" and 4'.
There were spots in some of the closets to get into this area, sort of hidden compartments that me and my siblings would play in as kids.
Our friends were mostly terrified of the house and the spaces!
It had a total scooby doo vibe.
This is a nation which values privacy and doesn't like being told what to do.
Unlike those who crow endlessly about digital payments, etc, who love being told what to do.
And how to do it.
Of course, a lot of the settings I saw can only be set if you have the Enterprise version of Windows, so home and pro users are stuck...
Windows 10 Pro is the new Windows Home.

The big one will be cars. Dear god, help us.
Yes, God help us.
By the end of this century, human society will be something like THX 1138.
Maybe sooner.
I'd say the Uber car that hit the pedestrian was closer to self-driving than a Tesla.
Right, because the Tesla would have missed.

Intelligent Design?
ha, ha, hahahahah

Exactly.
Like...
Amazon Personal Jet Packs
Amazon Fresh Flowers
Amazon Incontinence Products
access to the underlying operating system and firmware
So in other words, a mythical thing which no longer exists.
So in other words, another AC without a fucking clue.
And if you only have one provider because of monopoly deals?
Thats my point.
If my ISP starts fiddling with my connection I'll pick another ISP. Remember buying internet access is a voluntary transaction between two parties if you don't like the service pick someone else.
The 1990s called and want their ISPs back.

Much better to trust politicians.
No, business leaders are the ones to trust.

Great progress all around.
One of the few things in the world I'm enthused and optimistic about.
Fantastic news!

Why isn't M$ paying a fine here?
Isn't it their OS that allowed this in the first place.
Does Apple and/or Linux have similar scams pulled on them?
Some people would take the discount?
We'll knock off 10% for the bathroom cam.
An additional 25% for the bedroom cam!
the reason people choose to stay in AirBNB is because they know they will be recorded.
What is it about Facebook that makes it so special?
My communications teacher from 10th grade is on there.
And she is a dominatrix.
Does this mean there will be adequate funding and an absence of political meddling?
Yes, they call it fundling, and I can assure you, it feels great.
what's next, fly a hot air balloon around the world?
New Coke
If we move to permanent DST, my sunrise will be around 10 am in the winter. I'll hate that more than spending a few minutes changing the clocks.
Too fucking bad.
I'll take dark mornings over having my body clock changed twice a year.
I like prominent understanding of how much interest you'll be paying

You have done a really good job of describing social media and its effects. /.
