Wrong. The language part of it was only half the meaning.
The connotation for "Barbarian" may be misconstrued to mean only the language, but there was a lot more to it than that, especially in the ancient "enlightened" Hellenic and Roman societies. It had to do just as much with the cultural identity, Hellenic vs Persian, Roman(anyone inside the empire) vs those outside the empire.
All it will take is about 20%-25% unemployment for social order in the US to break down. The "thinkers" in govt, business and academia know this. The increasing militarization of the police, the complete disregard for the Constitution, the NSA monitoring everything, etc is getting ready for this. The canard of islamic terrorism was a good ploy and it has worked very well.
As much as I love the idea of robots creating a paradise on earth for humans to live out their fantasies and do what they all really ever wanted to do, without the need for working, etc; I just don't see that happening. Greed will win out. It always has.
Again I will reccomend the following good read on this subject:
Manna by Marshall Brain.
So again, the question remains, and will continue to for the foreseeable future, what are the millions of soon to be unemployed going to do? Who will feed them, house them, etc?
I've been going to an acupuncturist for over ten years, and I can tell you without any hesitation it has helped me tremendously. My main reason to go is back problems, but he has helped me with shoulder/elbow injuries as well as stress and allergies.
With that being said, I wholeheartedly support vaccinations, and modern medicine. If I were in need of help, regardless of illness, and "Western" medicine could help me you're damn right I would take advantage of that. TCM(Traditional Chinese Medicine) is just another tool to use for health, along with Yoga, diet, etc;
We have had to deal with Trusteer here at work. It is utter krap and will fubar normal Windows installs. Essentially the only way to get this to work is to dedicate a VM to it. We are lucky we only have to use it occasionally.
It is the First World that is going to have to lead with cleaning up our act on the environment, green tech, etc;
There is no way in hell you can ask people who barely survive to worry about pollution.
If you meant clean air for the planet, not just yourself then your car is probably not the place to start. Use less electricity. That's where the majority of the air pollution comes from.
Not so fast...
Where I live, in a valley with mountain ranges on two sides, and an inversion in the winter and ozone in the summer, the vast majority of that problem comes from auto exhaust. Sure, there is some pollution from industry, but our coal burning power plants are hundreds of miles away.
Really the only thing that is going to help in this situation is electric cars, but there you go, being powered by coal.
Unless we can get solar charging going...
While I agree with the sentiment about newer vehicles, etc, the last thing I need or want is another loan.
IMHO this is 99% of this discussion...
For the millions out there who drive vehicles 10+ years old(such as myself), one of the main reason we keep them instead of getting something newer is the obvious fact that THEY ARE PAID OFF.
Rocket Science, eh?
Unfortunately for the environment, I will stick with my old truck that gets 10mpg for the aforementioned reason.
What is really amazing, and just freeking audacious to say the least, is how the IDOT is even considering doing this.
With all the recent focus on digital privacy, etc, especially since the "outing" of the NSA via Snowden, with the protests against police brutality a la Ferguson, etc, it just amazes me that something like this would even be considered. Amazing.
Who in their right mind would hand their unlocked cell phone to law enforcement?
The reality is, they are always looking for something, anything, any scrap of information, or anything misconstrued or misinterpreted, to be USED AGAINST YOU.
People keep forgetting, it doesn't matter if you haven't done anything wrong or not. That doesn't matter and never did. There are loads of Americans out there who have been "put through the ringer"(putting it mildly) by LE who were honest people who never did anything wrong.
Nothing, I repeat nothing on my iPod has been purchased from any "store"...
Yes, I'm one of those nuts who still rips cd's to mp3 and puts them on my devices.
Relatives ask why it is so hard for them to share music between their devices... LOL.
Once the plastic is all gone we'll be primed for the Solar Flare CME to blast clean what's left of modern technology, which would then set off all the nuclear weapons.
Roland Emmerich needs to get going on this!

40-50%?!? Really?!?

eventually it will be cheap enough to do this to everyone.
I can't wait!
Your post made my day!
Sure, we all know you're one of the Waze obfuscators off the 405...
Thats some lawn you've got.
This guy will straighten out Baltimores bad cops: http://stuffpoint.com/the-walk...

I was thinking of making profile on Facebook.
Now I'll have to pop on over to that competing social site, Drunkbook and create one there.

You're right on the money here.

Don't worry, the Roberts Court will be fine with this.

Internet of Things.
Where all manner of previously easy to use appliances and household goods come with phone-home DRM for "added value".
That's nothing, oligarchy built a society of drones.
Oh! You mean the robot planes. Sorry, my bad.
FTFY
a true AI, will show whatever way it's tought.
Thats sum teechin fer ya!
Is the day I stop browsing the net.
Try "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" by Edward Gibbon.
Pretty sure no one has yet got a starship going or they would be here and everywhere else too.
The Sol system is on quarantine until we get our shit together or self-destruct.

ignoring your own Constitution pretty much daily for 13 years.
Interesting how thirteen years ago a certain "terrorist" attack happened?
Coincidence?
My thoughts exactly.
Good lord, with the IoT, and any other "value added" krap out there, are we to expect even a moment away from ads?
