Try supporting software that only runs on Windows and then talk to me... Sure Linux is great, Ubuntu and Centos are awesome, I support those also. But the fact remains that most of the software that I've supported down through the years(accounting, security, scientific, point of sale, crm, etc;...) in an administrative function ONLY RUNS ON WINDOWS. If anything, I would imagine that your "wide-world-of-linux" worldview is an anomaly, and doesn't represent the majority of admins out there, who support both Windows and Linux. The only that turns my stomach more than a Linux Snob is an Apple Snob.
Different people watch things for different reasons. "Sport"...? Perhaps you are correct. "Game"...? Sure as shit StarCraft is a game, with as much strategy/tactics as any "real world/physical" sport. I love the NFL, but I would take watching StarCraft over baseball/golf/tennis anyday. Game On!
Once tech like this becomes commoditized(20 years?), just like the pc and the cell phone did, it's going to put loads of people out of work. Devices like this will be used to do everything from home health aid, janitorial, picking fruit, and mining. Interesting how that timeline will coincide with a general downward trend in education in the U.S. We already see on the horizon that many "white collar" jobs(financial, creative, etc;) will be lost to software. I find it fascinating how much of a double-standard there is in the media regarding this subject. A constant clamoring about jobs, the unemployment rate, who brings jobs to whose district, etc;, yet not a whisper about things like this. Obviously tech like this will only proliferate, and eventually become "the norm", not only for use as prosthetics, but for a vast array of uses.

I think the article, and the general sense in American culture now, is that technology has engendered a sort of "fast food" mentality towards information. The firehose of bullshit that comes through our phones and computers has led to a "least common denominator" cultural context that we now live in, whereby any intelligent, thoughtful discussion is steamrolled over by angry political rants and "keeping up with the Joneses" ala web 2.0, and instant everything. This is probably the best line from TFA: "We prefer knowing to thinking because knowing has more immediate value."
Hey, I'm all for the 'get off my lawn' vibe, as I've been online since '92. However, lets be real here. AOL allowed connections to USENET in '93. That was 18 years ago, so in the timeline of the net, and especially of "the web", that is A LOOONNNNGGG time ago. Vast epochs of time in the Internet Age. So no, anonymity is definitely not recent.
I wasn't inferring any sort of moral judgement on oil usage. I agree with you about oil in regard to things like plastics, fertilizer, etc. But using oil in the vast amounts we do now for transportation is untenable. Do you really think the price of oil will stay where it is now indefinitely, or without any price shocks? The First World has had 40 years to migrate to a less polluting and more sustainable transportation energy source.
I own a 99 Ram 1500 5.2 liter that gets shitty mileage. I bought it when gas was something like $1.50/gal. The bed(and body) are scratched and dented from years of doing remodel work, hauling stuff, desert camping, etc;. I get flak from various politically correct pontificaters about how I'm destroying the planet, etc;. Well, I also ride my bike a lot and take public transit(bus, light rail), recycle, etc;. But to me that doesn't matter, because if someone has procreated, even once, they have done more permanent damage to the planet than my guzzler truck ever will. So before you point the finger about gas mileage, make sure you don't have any offspring. Also, there are three words I can't get out of my head, "it's paid for".
That is why the best possible thing that could happen is for the price of oil to continue going up. As long as we can suck on that Canadian/Venezuelan/Saudi teet, things won't change.
That trend towards greed and complacency in corporate America, especially regarding R&D being a waste, has been greatly amplified by all corporate decisions being made to boost stock price and please shareholders.
to dumb things down regarding the average audio consumers expectation of quality. The 'loud' sound quality of most records that have come out in the last 10 years or so, combined with ear buds, combined with lossy audio formats have created a witches brew of shitty(let me rephrase that, SHITTY!) sounding music. The music itself may be great, but the medium it is communicated to the eardrum has devolved... See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war for more details. I used to love being able to turn up my stereo to get a rush from 'loud' music. Now it's already LOUD...
Polling in the last few months consistently shows the American public are blaming(what passes for...) Republicans more than Democrats in regard to the budget debacle, and Congress' inability to make a deal. Both the American public, and the business community understand that compromise is needed. This is reality, not a game. Politics is all about compromise. You rarely get exactly what you want, unless of course you run a totalitarian state. Getting exactly what you want is a fantasy that the baggers have bought into. Absolute bullshit. Integrity in politics? Remember how Cato the Younger ended up...
And it worked...
Yea, but think about how much fun they will have playing Angry Birds in the toilet on the plane!

This is a Bay Area centric issue. Deal with it.
We have a winner.

That was in Missouri...
They're just trying to make it that much easier for the hacker arm of the Peoples Liberation Army to get your data.
Exactamundo! The reality is, conservatives secretly love shit like this. See http://www.whale.to/b/authoritarians.pdf for details.

Sort of like the "Clear Skies Initiative".

Lieberman is Gollum...
The Tea Party are shills for Karl Rove, and the rest of the Neo-Cons who blew the budget surplus left over from the Clinton administration.
