Mini had poor sales because it was priced too much for the hardware contained. This was more a result of their inability to keep it refreshed. The price is fine when first released, but they go so long between refreshes that it gets to be quite expensive for the hardware contained...
Doesn't make it any less true just because people say it a lot in "response"
Sounds like my Windows experience.
Sorry to hear that you have had to edit "strange text files" to get your GUI running properly under windows. Or your new wireless card didn't work with XP? etc etc
Truth is you're correct, all OS installs take some time. Linux for the desktop installs just seem to require more level of effort to work 100%.
Otherwise Windows and Mac OS have to compete with these new features AS WELL AS Linux's price ($0.00).
Though I know I will be modded down.
People who think Linux costs $0.00 IMHO think their time is worth $0.00
I have used linux off and on for the last 10 years or so. I have yet to encounter an install that worked 100% perfect out of the "box". Some installs were darn close, but I always ended up in strange forums from google searches to try and get some aspect working properly.
"sends in an AP article featuring interviews with the old men who launched the first satellite 50 year ago."
Real impolite summary. How about just men? People? Brilliant men who accomplished an amazing feat 50 years ago?
Calling them "old" is insulting and unnecessary.
Exactly. VNC is slow the couple of times I tried it over a 100mbit line...though I guess there may be forks that are better. The built in remote desktop server in XP Pro just made life so much simpler than setting up a 3rd party RD server, and worked extremely well.
As subject says, IMHO Win2K was the height of MS OS's released so far.
I am glad you brought up the fact that everyone here (and elsewhere too) bitched about XP. I recall TONS of articles & discussions asking why XP was slower on the same computer compared to Windows 2000.
The only reasons I switched to XP from 2000:
1) Much better USB support 2) Remote Desktop built in
Otherwise, there was not anything in it I cared about...
I still turn off all the XP GUI crap and using Windows Classic to keep my Windows 2000 interface (or close to it).
well, i use flexcar (rental car sharing), and it is WONDERFUL. I don't have to maintain it, deal with insurance, nada. I just use their car, and walk away when I am done with my rental.
Please please please, make the profile system much less obtrusive. It is so confusing to use, migrate, and handle these profiles in Thunderbird. It is why I don't use Thunderbird anymore. It kept breaking and was just too much hassle.
Windows SuperFetch enables programs and files to load much faster than they would on Windows XP-based PCs.
When you're not actively using your computer, background tasks--including automatic backup programs and antivirus scans--run when they will least disturb you. These background tasks can take up system memory space that your programs had been using. On Windows XP-based PCs, this can slow progress to a crawl when you attempt to resume work.
SuperFetch monitors which applications you use the most and preloads these into your system memory so they'll be ready when you need them. Windows Vista also runs background programs, like disk defragmenting and Windows Defender, at low priority so that they can do their job but your work always comes first.
I tried them. I used a personal private key to encrypt the data (never trust your data to a 3rd party where it is not encrypted by you). Then I replicated a data crash and tried to restore the files to a 2nd computer. Result? I could not get the data to decrypt properly (and yes I did enter the correct key). Google for this issue, it is well discussed...

You likely have too little ram (let me guess, a pathetic 512mb stock right?). Bump it up to 2gb, and the Mini will be great.
Exactly my point. Thank you.
Linux is hardly $0.00.
So you've had to edit your registry to get the GUI working properly?
Thanks, i will check it out again
Sorry, Slashdot URL handling mucked it up -- or likely it was just me :)

Furthermore, already in this discussion there are posters stating exactly the problem with desktop linux:

They had some many promotions that I got a ton of Flooz free and bought several nice things thanks to that $35-50 million in VC money.
Thanks Flooz and the bubble!
And in the old days, Microsoft would come back with a vengeance and release some great stuff in response -- in this case, Dos 5x was great!
As subject says, IMHO Win2K was the height of MS OS's released so far.

They can, you just wouldn't want to pay for it... :)
As subject says :)
Unless you are saying you need more ram (which may be true), this is why Vista always has all of the memory utilized

Microsoft 360 fan boys suck. Seriously, you're worse than Apple fan boys if you think that is a TROLL post.
As subject says, I won't play anything made to originally require Real Player. UGH Yes, I do have Real Alternative installed...

And the encryption uses THEIR key. So your data is NOT private if they choose to look.
Uh, it is a joke. Geesh, it's semantics. I think the joke is clear enough.
Wow, what a nerd you are...
