    but they are minding it less

    or is someone else minding it for them? Most ISPs and most users have some level of anti-spam software running. So are they minding it less because they are seeing less spam in their inbox?

    Spam will continue as long as it is profitable for those the benefit from spam. I say find a way to go after those that employ spammers ... as well as the spammers themselves. It really shouldn't be that hard.

    Most fundementally, the reason I reject your conclusion can be best expressed as a question: "If the linux process is so poor, why is it more popular than *BSD?"

    I'm not picking sides but most fundamnetally, the reason I reject your point is:

    Quite often, being the most popular is not determined by being best. It is usually about being good enough for most people.

    * VHS vs Betamax - a classic example
    * Microsoft Windows - if you are here then you know why.
    * American Idol winners - a talent show that ends in a popularity contest.

    I downloaded the SP1 first thing this AM. I will now sit on it while waiting to see if they pull it and release SP1a.

    I sure it was a test server. I can't imagine any *good* admin configuring a production system to automagically recieve updates.

    University networks should not be "wide open". Put students on a seperate VLAN (or their own LAN). Employees go on another VLAN (or LAN).

    Restrict access to the eGrade type systems to Employee VLANs and still use good application security.

    Better yet, specific IP addresses within the Employee IP networks if feasible becuase not every employee needs access to the eGrade system. Some employees might even be up for some extra cash.

    oh and lock the BIOS so that evil knoppix-std CD won't boot. ;-)

    Keep sending them spam, and keep spending them to court.

    1. Both or forced upon you.
    2. Both put a cost burden (time, money, etc) on you.

    Set your hosts file to read-only for attributes and permissions. It makes it a bit harder for you to edit but then again how often do you edit a hosts file on a desktop PC?

    Tnd the next step for the evil scammers is to just host the fake website on your own PC (127.0.0.1) so they don't have to worry about being shut down. Then their evil applet will send your personal information to whatever owned servers they have.

    I just commented about a trojaned hosts file in another part and then I got a WAMU phisher.

    I just made my hosts file RO. It isn't much but it might help just in case I ever bump my head and start running every attachment i get.

    What I am waiting for is for these own3d PCs to get their hosts file edited to bypass what you are talkig about.

    and so on. The owned PCs are a much smaller population but I won't be suprised if the spammers/phishers resort to this tactic. Once they have access to your PC they can just keep corrupting your hosts file with "

    Yes I think there are at least a few Indians doing e-comm. I guess you didn't notice I used lower case.

    Now you do have an idea and based on the other replies to your comment WE may have learned some things.

    All razzin' aside. I was in a rush (I'm at work) and chose to use lower case to be make sure I was not referring to the aboriginal peoples of India.

    Yes business classes in college drilled into us to "maximize shareholders' equity". What they failed to drill into the students at the same time was to do this within the limits of the law and good moral judgement.

    Sure, laws and morals were talked about a few times but nowhere near as much as maximizing equity.

    Some would think it is all common sense but it seems that almost every day we see that common sense is really not so common.

    Disclaimer: I am a Tivo subscriber and like it.

    I agree. Tivo is almost like Google. Tivo "gets it". They know what their customers want/need and keep it simple.

    Companies keep trying to come out with Tivo killers and fail. These companies either think they have a better product or their product is good enough.

    Companies that think they have a better product than Tivo probably don't "get it" when it comes to Joe Average.

    Companies with the "good enough" approach are just trying to be greeedy and will probably never succeed. You can't take this approach unless you already have a huge market share. Think Microsoft. These companies should just cut deals with Tivo and license the technology.

    I don't pay $13/month. I got the lifetime subscription early on. With the Tivo service, i can setup "season passes" for my shows.

    Season passes are not the same as setting a date/time and duration to record. I believe season passes are keyed to the program name and the channel. Season passes have options for things like

    * Record first showings only, repeats, etc
    * Quality of recording
    * Number of showings to retain.

    You don't need to maintain a phone line either. If you have broadband then you can get the updates over that connection if you install a network adapter in the USB port.

    Now we get to hear from all the folks that say Tivo sucks and how Myth and ??? is better. If you haven't actually used a Tivo for a week then you probably can't say.

    The same goes for me I guess becuase I haven't spent any time with Myth of whatever else is out there. I just know that my Tivo works and it is simple enough for my parents to use it.

    This a good example of why we probably don't need new laws. If they committed fraud then convict them of fraud, regardless of the mechanism. If they went phishing and stole money right out of accounts, then charge them accordingly. The sentences would then be more in line with expectations. However, one could argue that sentences are too short becuase they obviously aren't deterring enough. :-)

    IANAL: Why do people think the different methods of committing a crime require different laws? Is murder by using a knife versus a crowbar defined and treated differently in the law books?
