Real is one of the worst things to install on a Windows machine. I only do it when needed and then uninstall it but friends and relatives I support don't know any better.
What I often see is the people who least understand the big picture when it comes to technology are the ones who feel held back.
The people I see getting mad just don't understand the impact or implications their "simple requests" may have on others.
"Can't you just open up ports 135-139 in the firewall for everybody"?
"It works fine on my system, something must be wrong with the server"
and my all time favorite when people don't have a clue why their system isn't working...
"It must be the network"
They really don't understand how their system works.
As an admin (LAN, WAN, firewall, server, email, etc... you get the idea) for a med size (3000 users) organization I often have to learn other peoples jobs just to figure out what the heck they are really trying to accomplish. It usually goes something like....
Customer: "We need..."
Me: "Why?"
Customer: Pick one: 1) Vendor says so 2) We tried everything else 3) Thats what someone else said 4) ?
Me: "What are you really trying to do?"
Customer: "What do you mean?"
Me: "Don't tell me what you think you need, tell me what you are trying to do?"
Once I understand what someone is trying to accomplish then I can often work somethign out for them.
We don't need laws specific to spam. We need laws to be generalized to stop any unsolicited communications that are forged with the intent to deceive the recipient.
I have not dealt directly with outsourcing but I have yet to hear of one long term success story.
Most of the stories go something like:
"Outsourcing saved us a bunch in the beginning but then they started charging us for every little change we wanted to make."
IMHO outsourcing often is used to hide the fact that costs are out of control. Costs in areas that are not needed at all or are very ineffecient. Management never blames themselves so they decide that it must be the over paid techies.
My roomate has a great idea. Outsource management! I hear tons of complaints about ineffective managers. Why pay managers so much when you can get a monkey to contribute nothing (ok maybe a little) to getting things done?
I work at a community college. We are going with the 802.1x w/ MS PEAP for our initial WLAN rollouts. Currently this is for employee (mostly execs) only. Management made the decision to be a MS shop years ago so 802.1x PEAP turned out to be the solution for us right now.
However, we are still researching WLAN solutions for when the decision is made to provide wireless access for the student VLANs.
Ideally an enterprise solution would
* be as transparent as possible to the users * NOT involve installing a client to avoid support issues. * be OS agnostic
If my company pays another company to advertise my product and or services and they use illegal advertising methods, then shouldn't my company be punished also?
Does it matter if my company knew about the advertising methods that would be used? I don't know anyone that would hire an advertising company without knowing what service was being provided.
The lists seem to be similar to the Better Business Bureau (in the US).

The BBB is an organization without authority. It is a voluntary system to People can lodge complaints about a business. People can also inquire about complaints against a business.
I may choose not to do business with any other businesses that do not have what I consider acceptable BBB records. Is it really the BBB's fault? Is their system flawed?
I don't think so. The BBB only provides information. Depending on how much I value the BBB or information, I will choose to do business with a company.
Blacklist are not much different. Organizations sign up for their information *voluntarily* and understand that there may be some "false positives" or disputed cases. Organizations weight the benefits and risks and make their own decision.
If a blacklist proves to block to much email then organizations might try another blacklist or not use one.
Thats it for now.
ok.. it is late and I am not sure where my point is going.
* Use existing laws: I am sure there is more than enough laws already on the books that cover "fraudulant and egregious methods to disguise and misrepresent". We don't need laws specific to spam we should use generic laws that cover communications fraud.
* Go after those that hire spammers too. If I contract someone to perform a service and I know their methods are not legal then I should be held liable too.
* Don't depend on laws to fix everything. Fix the system!

Q. Why didn't you include Mozilla? A. We were contacted by a developer in the Mozilla project, who asked us not to include Mozilla. The Mozilla.org project provides binaries for testing purposes only, as anyone who has read this page knows -- scroll down to the very bottom, and you will find a notice to that effect. In short, they do not want to wind up providing end-user support to people, and so they ask people not to re-distribute Mozilla unless it has been customized to make it clear that Mozilla.org did not provide the binary and will not support it.
Unfortunately, it is not at all clear what requirements we need to meet in order to be able to re-distribute Mozilla, or what level of customization would be needed to do so. Also, we didn't have anybody willing to take on that task. If you want to help us out with this, get in touch! Beonex is a fine product, but we tend to think that Mozilla is better, especially since it is updated much more often.
I live in Florida and in a previous career I came across this more than one would think. Typically it was "fire ants" (these little b4st4rds carry quite a sting) filling up an eletrical panel of some sort. I used to think of it like a ant suicide in mass... they all pile into the cabinet, hold hands, and POOF! Toasted ant colony.
What good is 7 tuners if I have digital cable or sattelite?
They need to come up with a standardized way to interface tuner cards in TVs or generic set top boxes.
Tell them how you feel.

I'm with you. There needs to be some standards so we can just plug cards into the back of TVs. Let me choose cable, satellite, or whatever I want.
So all these Chinese servers sending out spam turn out to be a three Chinese guys in Detroit. :-)

" Now these companies are taking everything about Linux that is great and not contributing back to the community."
Disclaimer: I am a TiVo owner.
Is TiVo violating any licensing?
I'm left handed and game console controllers don't feel natural to me either.
It all seems a little too easy to me. Reporters never get setup.... yeah right.

Does that mean if I am not allowed to use my cell phone if they have a deal with a different cell provider?

Then again maybe I'm dreaming.

Doels this mean all public crypto algorithims are useless?
I think they plan to save a lot of money by using bulk mail and address everything to "Resident". :-)
Since when does someone else's freedom of speech *require* me to listen?
In the case of spam, it is on my dime too!

OS/Who?
BeOS didn't throw out the HFS entirely but you can define new attributes for the FS. This facilitates searching quite a lot.
Give BeOS a try sometime.
