Clearly parents that expect their child to be educated by morons who think anything with wires and a clear container must be a bomb...
Don't be too hard on the vice-principal. The red and blue wires always cause some confusion and there were probably some blinking lights too. On the other hand, he could be a moron.
After the first 15 minutes of viewing Avatar with the dark glasses (RealD 3D) on, I wouldn't want to watch it any other way.
If you haven't seen Avatar in 3D, do so.
I first saw Avatar in 3D and the effect was very good, but it really didn't add *that* much to the experience. I saw again today in 2D and it was better. The visuals were brighter, clearer and there was much more apparent color and detail.
I will resist seeing movies in 3D from now on in favor of the 2D version.
A Wisconsin man who wrote "Kip Hawley is an Idiot" on a plastic bag containing toiletries said he was detained at an airport security checkpoint for about 25 minutes before authorities concluded the statement was not a threat.
What we need to do now is to accept that airline travel is not safe, and can never be safe.
For the Nth time, airport security measures are not to protect "us", they're to protect the multi-million dollar investments the airlines have in their airplanes and prevent the collateral damage that may occur if one crashes. Protecting people is a secondary concern. This also explains why there is less (or no) security checks for small private planes.
The right question to me is "Why are we still using 32-bit?
It's sufficient *unless* one needs to access tons of RAM (e.g., for video/photo editing, huge database,...), and it's faster than 64-bit. So, for +95% of computer uses, 32-bit is fine.
...creating depth by making the background blurry doesn't impress...
You must not be impressed with reality as well. Non-focus objects outside the current visual depth of field (dependent on the aperture) are always blurry. Making this so in the CGI makes it *more* realistic than having everything in focus.
"Person in power believes rules don't apply to self, changes mind when caught." - Film at 11.
If more people respected or even cared about the spirit - heck, letter - of the law (or morality) instead of their personal wants, desires, and goals, we'd all be better off. Would the recent near-collapse of the banking industry have happened if the guys at AIG or Goldman-Sachs cared about the ramifications of their greed on others - and by "others" I mean "us", not the other bastards on Wall Street.
...would you rather use a one-liner that requires a 3-line comment, or a 10-liner that requires no comments...
Depends on the efficiency and maintainability. A one-liner that's "perfect" is probably worth the extra comments. Ten lines of self-evident code may not be better. Personally, I can't stand code that starts "boolean done = false; while (!done) {...}" when the condition can be determined inline using an operational variable.
There is no method to provide hints about file usage; for example, you might want to have a hint that says the file will be read sequentially, or a hint that a file might be over written. There are lots of possible hints, but there is no standard way of providing file hints...
Ya, we had that back in the stone-age and Multics would have been poster-child for this type of thinking, but it was a *bitch* and made portability problematic. I think VMS has some of this type of capability with their Files 11 support - any VMS people care to comment. Unix (and most current OS) sees everything as a stream of bytes, in most cases, and this is much simpler.
An OS cannot be everything to all people all the time...
Frischling said he met with two TSA special agents for about three hours and was forced to hand over his laptop computer after the agents threatened to interfere with his contract to write a blog for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines if he didn't cooperate...
Hmm.... I think Steve and I have different definitions of the word "forced", but it sounds like standard Gestapo - I mean TSA - practices to me.
Also it should be noted that a statement such as "no greenery left on Earth" is an exaggeration at best, considering life would die on the planet without the Oxygen Cycle.
Actually "It is estimated that between 70% and 80% of the oxygen in the atmosphere is produced by marine plants." meaning Algae (I also heard this statistic on a Discovery channel show.) The article continues:
Plants on land and in the ocean are extremely important to us and we wouldn't be here without them. Land plants provide us (and other critters) with food, raw materials like wood, and fiber to make cloth and paper. They protect the land from erosion with their roots, provide beauty and shade on a hot day, and produce oxygen as an extra added bonus although we could probably survive with the oxygen.
And, once "entertainment" crosses over the line, I don't enjoy it. It's not entertainment anymore.
You must not enjoy many movies as they all carry a message. Some of the themes are small, others large. The messages in Avatar were not preached so much as strongly demonstrated. I believe those that took it as a sermon, probably did so because they disagree.
Dude! The first rule of flight club is: You don't talk about flight club.
OK, seriously.
3) Stupid security restrictions? Naw - back the car up to the side of the plane and throw your bags aboard! At larger airports, there are often security fences and the like, but even these are easily navigated, certainly without the stupid wands, shoes, and security theater.
People misunderstand all the airport security. It's not to protect them, it's to protect the airplane, the multi-million dollar investment of the airline, and any expensive collateral the plane debris may fall upon. Not to mention protecting the appearance that the government can protect its people.
...some cop or judge gets snagged and his/her name either does or does not end up on the Twitter list. Personally, having one's name on Twitter, for any reason, has got to be worse than the actual crime.:-)
...they routinely bring you the problems no one else can solve - and you solve them, or you can reply, "No thanks" (especially for problems you don't want to solve).
The parenthetical may seem odd, but, for example, I was once asked to "fix" some code that was working correctly, but returning numbers management didn't like. I said: No thanks. You can't use a context "diff" for SLOC counts and expect the number of adds, deletes, and changes to always match what you expect. The utility generates the edits needed to alter the code from A to B. They're usually the most "efficient" list of edits, which isn't always what was done. Simply changing the counts with a formula isn't the solution.
Yes, sometimes I'm a dick, but it's probably warranted - deal with it.
Do they demand you "recycle" the glasses? Why not keep them?
Umm... no. That's why I used the word "asked". Keeping them is pointless, but making people buy a fresh pair for each movie is wasteful and done simply to increase profits.
Moviegoers were offered to get a refund or view an analogue 2D showing instead.
It seems all my local theaters only offer 3-D viewings at the jacked-up price (for glasses).
While I know that 3-D adds to the experience, for some movies, I'm getting tired of having to pay an extra $4 for the glasses *each time* - then being asked to "recycle" them afterward. Let me pay a slightly higher price - once - for, possibly nicer, glasses and reuse them. In addition, if the movie is only offered in 3-D, the glasses should be free. </rant>

I once had a girlfriend like that - and you guess correctly.
I'll wager his value for "penis" is too small and "dick" too large... Oh the irony.

And how do I charge it when I'm somewhere else?
Oh. Use a plug-in charger? Um... So, what's the point here?
How about standardizing on a USB charging interface?
"Wood" is a noun, while "bone" is a verb.
Try this, 'Idiot' barb gets passenger detained and see how it goes:

Actually, bullets kill people. We should regulate those, the Second amendment only mentions "arms", not munitions... :-)

See: Irony. In this case, either "comic" or "tragic" would be appropriate.
