Labs are empty and Cafes are full at MIT. Yeah right, those kids don't want to socialize, that is why they got into MIT. They love the lab, in fact they never leave their labs, which is obvious once you smell them. A geek without a lab is like a race car driver without a car.
Why is it that every time any dope at MIT creates or invents some invention, we all have to hear about it. I am sure if it was invented at University of Southwestern South Dakota A & M, we would never have heard of the damn thing. I know MIT has a lot of smart people, but for godsakes we are talking about fogging of glass. This is not Nobel Prize work.
P.S.--Yes I am bitter those assholes rejected me from their Phd program.
You know, after reading many of the comments about this story, I realized something. It seems to me that every person on slashdot is a male. Is that more proof that males just have a higher intelligence? I think it is.
Why don't researchers try to use human sound localization methods. Humans do have an innate ability to detect the localization of sound sources for various directions and distances. In particular, a simple way to detect the locations in the horizontal domain are Interaural Time Delays(ITD) and Interaural Level Delays(ILD), where interaural means between the ears. These are just fancy ways of saying the source location is closest to the ear that hears the loudest sound and hears it first. The other ear will then hear that same sound with some time delay and at a lesser volume. Depending on the length of the time delay and how much the volume of the sound has decreased, we can tell which direction the sound came from. It essentially reduces to a high school geometry problem.
Sleep plays a large part in the ability of someone being healthy. For my situation, a good amount of sleep allows me to avoid taking medication for my epilepsy. I have had no seizures for two years without any medication and therefore no side effects , just because I have been getting 8 hours every night.
A recent poll I took around campus showed that the only people that use myspace are sorrority girls and the cast of the "OC". Isn't it obvious folks, Rupert Murdoch wants to turn the politically inactive bimbos of the greek system into Republicans.
University of Los Angeles?? I have never heard of that prestigous intstitution. It must be somewhere closer to Compton, not in the posh hills of beverly like UCLA.
Here is an interesting idea. Will we prove the validity of the Theory of evolution by going through it with computers and our quest for artificial intelligence. Are we bound to repeat mother nature's path to intelligence? If so, shouldn't it be clear to AI researchers that they need to master the description of each organism as it appeared on Earth?
That has got to be nice, your Phd thesis depends on you going on hikes in California. I guess that's only a little better than hacking at code 10 hours a day.
Every single last one of us hate Microsoft and everything that it stands for. This includes Steve and Bill. Therefore whenever they say something like "ipods are dead" or "the demise of google is approaching" you jump all over it. But lets face it, they are good businessmen with good ideas. Whenever they say something, we shouldnt jump all over them, we should scratch our heads and think about why they are making that prediction. If we can't understand it, then its fairly obvious that we do not havea business savvy. And if you don't have it, then it's not really appropriate to be making geeky predictions.
PS. Trying to get a negative score for the comment
Will the idea of virtual conferencing ever stick? Do we think that people will actually like the idea of a virtual boardroom where people from around the world can come and meet? I think it is a neat idea, but then again I am biased since the project I am working on has something to do with it. What do the people of slashdot think? Will businessman like Donald Trump skip buying their own jets and helicopters for buying a state of the art virtual reality boardroom??
I hate admitting it, but Bill Gates is probably right about this. My argument, well Irwin Jacobs the CEO of Qualcomm told me so. Not only is Jacobs a master businessman, but he is a person that knows the technology he is working with inside and out. He is an extremely smart guy ( got his Phd in EE from MIT in just three years) and has not made many mistakes. My thesis advisor is one of his good friends and when he came to visit our lab, all he could talk about is how cellphones will be more than just voice boxes, they will be full on computers having the capability to become our number one media centers. He even said quote,"I wouldn't put my money in IPODs, they aren't going to be around for much longer".
What do the slashdot people think of writing such a book for a subject outside of pure physics. I always thought the average person would be quite interested in a dummied down version of electrical or computer engineering.
I cant decide if I like this whole idea. I know people think that math is hard, but those people have no idea how much harder it can get. For example, many people believe a political science or communications degree requires just as much work as a math or physics degree. Those of us in the field of math or applied math dont get the respect we deserve. I think having a TV show will make matters worse. Then again, a TV show can shed light on the beautiful world of mathematics. I can't decide if I like it. What do you all think??
why do we care?? I mean seriously why do i care what we are going to do in space? Why are we geeks and why do all geeks have interests in the same geeky stuff? Lets make slashdot cool together. Lets talk about American Idol...
I cant, do it. I like space more than pretty pop singers. whats wrong with us??
I would like to see more prizes that are as prestigous as the Nobel for newer areas of research. There are those of us that no matter what kind of research we produce, could never be given a world renown prize simply because we are not in the right field.
When was the last time a sociologist wrote a sophisticated program. I mean the way he is advertisng is it, he proclaims the program is capable of understanding the document. Thats insane. Do the guys at the AI lab at MIT know that some sociologist in Missouri is kicking their asses.

Not a single good movie on the list, except for the Lord of the Rings. For god sakes, people watched Independence Day and loved it, we are stupid.
