The hardware failures I can understand, but needing to rewire the data center after it's been wired once, and the fact that half of them overheat? Those sound like problems that should be addressed in the engineering and installation phases of the datacenter.
Each machine has smoke detector installed right on top of it. The Maintenance director is standing at the gate of data center with pistol in his both hands. As soon as alarm is heard, a batch of maintenance engineers rush towards the faulty machine with keyboard, harddisc, mouse, motherboard and other components. The faulty components of machine are replaced on the rhythm of drumbeats they have been rehearsed through 1000's of times. The crew has to rewire the machine, reboot, and be back at the gate with burnt machine in less than 5 minutes or they are shot dead.
The trouble is, because of this time limit, the maintenance engineers simply pull machine out of rack without disconnecting any wires. And that's why rewiring is needed.
Everyone slams Total Recall because they don't actually comprehend what actually was going on. So they hate the movie because what they think was actually going on was not what was going on at all.
You got a point. They must have seen the movie in dream:)
This is great news, especially for developing nations whose energy demands are on rising trend. Countries like Indonesia, India and other middle east countries, where sun light is available in abundance, will benefit most.
I would go with financial penalties, with no criminal offenses whatsoever. The whole IP and IP theft is more to do with financial gains than anything else, and I would wonder why it should not be treated so.
In addition to this, by default a patent belongs to public domain, and anybody could use that IP without any block or hassle, for a nominal fees decided by an independent group.
I do not agree about 12 months time limits though.
Which explains why Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME, XP, and 2003 are all not vulnerable to this attack.
Back in 1995, I visited a client, where a (half baked) Systems Manager was trying to demonstrate me how to RESET password in Windows 95, by deleting the password file and then showing me how you could log in with same user name and you could gain access to system.
I said, you could gain access by simply pressing Esc key, and no need to login. He immediately tested it and he was shocked. I still remember look on his face. He asked me "what's use of password?". I said, "Nothing". He sat in his chair with blank face for few minutes...:-D
TFA does not talk about transmission. How exactly they are going to manage a good reliable power transmission with the kind of floating power station, Any idea?
Having developed many solutions using CORBA and SOAP, I welcome better solutions. Not sure though how it is going to resolve the problems we faced with CORBA and SOAP both?
SOAP could be easily integrated over current HTML based networks without need to make hole in firewall. But it was pig slow and designing stateful services was painful.
CORBA offered more technical challenges viz, complexity, version control, fault tolerance (not that a SOAP HA services is piece of cake, but I don't want anybody to go through torture of designing a HA CORBA server)
The truth is there is no such thing as a spooky or scary weapon. A non-naive look at the world shows that human beings really don't care about what happens to the rest of the world, as long as the effects aren't felt at home.
Dunno whether it is useful or not, why not join some online groups (yahoo?) or some special communities in Orkut?
Orkut there is a community for Sci-Fi book club http://www.orkut.com/Community.aspx?cmm=34191
Orkut has recently added some features related to reviews on books and you could find some leads.
Agreed every bit of it. And I have posted similar views earlier that M$ is gonna gain nothing except killing a good company, similar to Hotmail.
However, I do not agree that Icahn is an idiot. For him (and other investors) this is probably a lifetime opportunity to make money, for which they have invested in Yahoo. Their interest is in making money in the first place.
Brilliant idea. Why not we conspire against M$? Let them take over yahoo, and we all switch to some other portal, say xyz. Then M$ will spend millions to take over that. And again we switch. Again M$....again switch...and one day M$ gives up....:-D
BadAnalogyGuy, I have enjoyed your posts, and, still remember funny comments by other members few months ago....something like 'I wanted to tell you how bad your analogy is, before I saw your ID'.
I do not agree with you completely. As far as, humour on Slashdot is concerned, I have thoroughly enjoyed funniest posts, one of them being part of my signature too.
Having said that, IMO, I am also waiting for some good discussion on this topic, being a solution provider using embedded Linux and FreeRTOS. I was specially interested in some discussion on Power Saving, Audio and Video services, codecs, EMI and its effects on reliability. And I am hopeful, somebody with good knowledge on this subject could post some insightful comments on this.
To answer your question, I have not enjoyed any web site more than Slashdot (pr0n excluded:-D) and I hope to see still lot better of it.
Technology alone is not sufficient. For any project like this to work for more than a couple of years, it must have a sustainable business model. (In the long run, at least as much money needs to come in as is going out.) Village Phone, which builds on traditional cell phone technology, has been very successful in bringing communications to rural Africa. Their model, in summary, involves an entrepreneur from the village purchasing a cell phone, roof antenna, and charger with the help of a microloan. They are then able to sell minutes to villagers for a profit. The cell phone antenna must be within about 35 km of a cell phone tower and have line of sight, thus making the technological aspect of this model unworkable in many rural or mountainous regions. The business model, however, could potentially be used just as successfully with other technologies, including WiFi paired with VoIP.
If a publisher wants to publish a book of an author that wants his book only to be published in a green envelope, then that might seem odd to you, but still you will have to do it as long as you want to publish the book and have no other agreement in place.
It is freedom, in a way, that binds you with some responsibility. And how difficult it is for many people to understand.
One does have freedom to choose not to drive on roads. But when you choose to drive on roads, there is binding of following certain traffic rules, for the benefit of all. And one must understand the logic behind those bindings.
IMHO, I don't think Microsoft is going to gain anything by taking over Apple, Yahoo OR Google. They have acquired Hotmail earlier, and I personally know many friends switching from Hotmail to something else for pathetic services. I do not have a single contact with Hotmail address today.
MSFT is not known for quality, and, yes, it is loss to the world to have lost a good company to MSFT. But MSFT is not going to gain anything

Yeah. And shooting wife...right in her head, while saying 'consider this as divorce'??? It is relevant.
I knew my boss had something to do with cannibals.

I found a better article that explains the concept with better pictures.

they take those pictures?
So true.

It's turtles all the way down :)
That proves, women never grow :P
Looks like a karma burning time for me too.....

Hold your horses, Osama, it's not perfect yet :)

You know, it made me smile more, when I saw "Compare prices on Quake" in the related links.
"Keep sailing. After 3 months we also have chance to be called 'Hello, sailor' "

To offer the slashdotters to hand over the money to me and just forget it.
I was always skeptical while giving blood sample for any reason....suspecting it could be used for DNA analysis.
IANAE, but feel that spit can't be (mis)used for DNA analysis. Hope some expert could comment on it.
