First, I've added you as a friend. It never hurts to network.
Second, yes there seems to be some grey area between 'save', and 'take control for the good of democracy'. America is SO diverse, and large, that for some reason, we seem to feel a responsibility for the rest of the world. However, we're in a quandry, because we can't get past the elephant in our own living rooms. I guess it's easier to solve the problems of the world than it is to solve your own. In my opinion, the most important thing you could stress is why they need to know these things (and you'd better be a pretty crafty wordsmith). The automobile is a very close analogy to how people feel about their computers--it's just a vehicle. A convenience that will take them where they need to go to accomplish varied tasks.
Most folks don't care how their car works, all they know is that they need to keep it filled with gas (keep current with the ISP payments), and follow the maintenance schedule (Windows Update handles that, right?). The analogy breaks down when there's an actual problem.
When the car starts doing weird things, or loses it's zip, they take it to someone that knows how to fix it, and then it's all better again--nobody got hurt. When their computer starts doing weird things, or losing it's zip--they've already been compromised. At best, it's just spyware, at worst, they're a zombie, or their info is in the hands of some miscreant individual.
I'm aware that this all belongs in the 'Security' chapter, but I feel that the basics of why they need to know is paramount. Or else you won't get their attention. It is just a vehicle, after all.....
Thanks for that. Most Americans might agree (was that vague enough?) that we don't hate the rest of you either. It's my belief that, while we don't hate the rest of the world's countries, we just don't understand. Hell, it's hard enough to understand what's going on in your own county sometimes (by county, I mean division of the actual state, I didn't mispell country). We live in such a microscopic world that the macroscopic view of the world gives us indegestion. So much so, that it's like you're trying to explain the virtues of Voodoo to a Baptist. I feel it might be the same in your country.
'One Planet, One God, One Country, and the Holy Dollar to bind them all'
I feel that one God, One Country, and the 'Holy' whatever are microscopic in this world. It's the 'One Planet' that I'm rooting for. Yes, I'm going for the +5 Way-The-Hell-Out-There mod, but I seriously think that the only way we're going to realize ourselves as one distinct race, is by a visit from the authors of "How to Serve Man"--it's a cookbook for those that didn't know.
Government? If you don't trust your Government, that's a good thing. The U.S., and most of the E.U. seem to have a grasp on most things. Most of it microscopic, but I think that the 'whole' of the human race is juxtaposed to coalesce, given the chance. We're all ready to hate until the situation arrives...Hmmmm...we'll come together.
Okay, sport, judging by your response to the parent, I'd guess you're at 'least' a way mature 19? I think you are also the GP, and couldn't handle the adverse response to the glory of your +4 Funny, first post?
The reason this has my nuts in a twist is that you seemed to imply that the parent didn't fit the 'mold' of a 'true emo kid'. If that's not an oxymoron, I don't know what is.
I don't think that the parent's post is anymore mature, but if you're going to flame somebody by telling them to, "Grow the fuck up", calling them a "pre-pubescent teen", and suggesting suicide--well--it doesn't make your argument very strong, does it? I'm talking biological beings here. Have we surpassed the human element through electronics?
The first step is to realize who you're working for... You said you are working for a manufacturing company, however you talk like you're working for just another company that doesn't understand IT--or the way 'you' understand IT/IS? (flamebait? I wonder?) In manufacturing, computers ARE just a tool--a means to get to the final product--albeit a vital tool. That's the way they've been living since the company start-up. Mostly paper, eventually some CNC programing, and mostly fly by the seat of your pants--that's manufacturing. You mention connectivity, but you don't mention what kind. Are you networked through a VNC server that connects your CNC programers to the operators on the floor? You said 100+ computers, so I hope so. Manufacturing types don't cotton too well to change--unless you can show them how these changes will enhance the buisness. The only way to do that--being that you're an IS/IT guy--is to talk to the vendors. Vendors of the 'manufacturing' solutions would be busting down your door to get in to do a dog-n-pony show. They can speak the manufacturing speak (that's what they need, and you CAN'T do it), and provide just enough 'razzle-dazzle' to get you what you need. And, you can do this without showing any proprietary/secret info. Maybe manufacturing solutions aren't your problem, maybe you're just trying to get a lackey or two, I don't know. It sounds like you want to change the company. Not gonna happen. You are not going to get a manufacturing company to realize what a software/online buisness company needs to realize. Two totally different worlds... Once again, it's just a tool (taken for granted)....
I hate you for comming here under the guise of being a Vet., and spewing your leftist propaganda--knowing that you would hit a soft spot. Perhaps it's just like a water-proof watch. Most of them are 'water-proof' to a defined amount of atmospheres. Everything has a limit.
I agree with the rest of your post, though. I can't see this as any kind of holy grail, militarily speaking. A poster below suggested that it could be used in nuclear power plants. In fact, I was more emphatic about parents that send their kids to daycare, prematurely, exposing them to MORE germs. It was in there, as I said, it was a run-on sentence. Exposing your kids because of poverty is a social issue. My point was that there are many--MANY--things that contribute to a child's well-being. I'm ranting a little here, but fuck you, you're an AC. I do know that antbiotics treat some things, and not others.
If you can, answer why some strains of the flu or the common cold seem to variate each year?
And this would be good news--seriously. However,my point, as quoted, was relevant to illnesses with regard to financial status--colds in particular--not leukaemia. Are there any more childhood cancers you'd care to cite, that are not affected by colds in this article? I'm not prepared to defend any of them, as I was only responding to the parent. As a parent (not of the thread type) myself, I only know how my children are affected, and how I choose to take care of them. Once again, the semantics of the article (by the few that have read it) have ruined another perfectly good tangent, by myself, and others. And I don't mean that as a joke. The correlation was childhood colds==increased risk of childhood cancers. Folks started getting into the cause of childhood colds, and I responded. As did many people.
That's a very interesting point. I have no idea. And hopefully a biologist will respond. I do have one question to add to yours (maybe the same as yours): Why do the number of strains keep multiplying?
As an aside: I agree that the natural transmission of a virus is important to your natural immuno-suppression, and total sterilization is a bad thing--unless you're ready for the H. Hughes-type of defense.
No it isn't. However, I would like to point out that the point of the "thread" is to discuss other points pertinent to the subject at hand.
Also, I would like to point out that the more 'colds' that get treated with antibiotics, the more resistant these 'colds' will be. So, no nobody's sick kid is doing anybody a favor. I agree whole heartedly with the parent. Take care of your sick kids at home, and they deserve a whole lot more than to be turned over to society as infants.
" I don't know if you misunderstood it or not, but it's not about kids being cold..."
I don't think you read past the second comma on the parent's post. The whole sentence provided a valid point. If the child's financial status cannot provide adequate nutrition, obviously their immune system will not be as effective as a child that recieves healthy snacks, and nutritious meals.
"Regardless of financial status, kids are going to get sick now and then, particualy when they're young and their immune system is developing."
While I agree that kids are going to get sick, I disagree with your belief that it has nothing to do with financial status. A child that is forced into daycare (sometimes after six weeks!), is going to incurr many more illnesses than a child that has the benefit of a stay-at-home-parent. This is a tricky statement, because this could mean that I'm talking about an underprivelegded child at the mercy of a welfare parent, a child that has two parents working to make ends meet, a child whose parents are both working to provide the 'best life possible', or the ideal situation, where there's a single income, and the child is provided both a healthy emotional, and nutritional life. (That has to be longest run-on sentence I've read.)
My point is, that there are many factors that determine a childs immunity to disease, and I believe the parent is pointing out one of them--an interesting post. I will never believe that financial status has nothing to do with it.
Exactly! I was exremely frustrated that everything I wanted to learn cost a fortune. I felt guilty over the 'copies' of software that I had obtained--felt it doubly so if I had to reinstall. Updates were also a problem. I was ecstatic when I found out that I could have ALL of the software offered by commercial companies (I even had my choice of different apps!) for the cost of a $6.00 dollar CD of RedHat 6.0 that I got off of Ebay. No strings attached. It's yours, use it as you wish. I can't even descibe the huge 'FUCK YOU, BILL' feeling I had as I watched all those packages getting loaded into my machine. That was in '96, and I haven't looked back since. To reiterate your point, the more difficult it becomes (my own morals aside) to pirate software, the more appealing OS/Free software will become. And they've come a long way since '96....
How will they get auto manufacturers to install this device in the cars? Who would voluntarily install it in their cars--unless it was to protect (read--govern) your teenager?
My only thought as to how this could be implemented is through some sort of punitive measure, tantamount to the breathalyzers put into the vehicles of drunk drivers. I didn't read that in the article, however.
If they get the auto manufacturers to comply, it would truly be scary.
Hmm... I sit corrected. However, I don't feel that calling 911 to see if your VoIP is working is tantamount to pulling a fire-alarm in an apartment building (to me that would be a "flagrant false alarm"). In Maryland it is only a fine 'after' the third occurrence of your house alarm going off with the police responding.
Do I think it's the right thing to do? No. Do I think it's right to ensure that my parent's safety is assured? Yes! I don't trust the VoIP providers to tell the truth, and I don't feel that that the 911 number that my parents call will get them to the correct Fire/Police/Emergency contact.
Sure, they can call the local folks, but how do the local folks know what address is going to show up on the 911 screen?
There is a lot of info that you can give the 911 operator to appease them--without having any response. I do believe that it should not be done in during peak times when you could be tying up lines, and taking away from people truly in need. However there needs to be some reasonable understanding on both sides. We do pay for the service after all (taxes, phone/cell phone surcharges)......Check your bill on both.
I'm sure there's already a 911 charge in there for VoIP service too...
Hey, if the service isn't working, I guess they won't find you. Troll indeed. I'd rather troll for a cop that knows where I am than "need" one, and have them not be able to find me....
You should get a "+? Informative" for your simple solution to the hype. I've copied and pasted your response in an email to my parents. They have VoIP (through their cable provider), and live in the sticks. I've been worried about the 911 issue since they subscribed, as they literally have NO phone service, other than the VoIP.
Thanks.

Exactly! Doesn't the GP's post fly in the face of most hacker's credo of not having to solve the same problem twice..?
Hey, if the service isn't working, I guess they won't find you. Troll indeed. I'd rather troll for a cop that knows where I am than "need" one, and have them not be able to find me....
You should get a "+? Informative" for your simple solution to the hype. I've copied and pasted your response in an email to my parents. They have VoIP (through their cable provider), and live in the sticks. I've been worried about the 911 issue since they subscribed, as they literally have NO phone service, other than the VoIP. Thanks.
