Well said sir. For the love of god, at least have an alternate 'serious' name that could possibly be brought up in a meeting with some directors regarding the OS to be installed on all 5,000 corporate desktops. Saying "Ubuntu" and fucking "Edgy Eft" will make you look spectacularly lame in those meetings.

    Just a little perspective.

Speaking from a social viewpoint, I personally think its a dangerous escalation. If the authorities start firing this at people then it can surely only be a matter of time until they start firing back.

Because rioters who are trampling people to death, shooting AK-47's in the air, and breaking storefronts and looting aren't a dangerous escalation. Trying to control an unruly mob is one thing, protestors are another. I say better this than those awful "rubber bullets"

  7. Its certainly impressive on Modded XBox The Ultimate Multimedia PC? · · Score: 1

Since the Xbox dropped in price to about $150 I went out and bought one with the sole intention of modding it. After installing XBMC (never heard of media portal until reading this article) it has completely replaced my pc and other A/V equipment as THE thing to use. I have imaged many of my dvd's for instant playback tivo-style. My entire mp3 collection is now accessable through a nice interface via remote control on the tv. I can also listen to digitallyimported shoutcast stations. Plus the Xbox supports 480p/1080i output to my HDTV which just looks awesome. Basically ever since I put in a new 200GB HD everyone who sees it (including girls) wants one! The Project Mayhem skin for XBMC is very sophisticated and decidedly un-MS looking.

As for anyone who thinks that the Xbox is slow and outdated.. at least try out Xbox Media Center and givce it chance.

On the other side of the coin the binaries needed or the SDK to compile the software is borderline illegal. So if you are concerned about that don't bother.

Totally unacceptable. Being a pretty picky reader its not too often I get exited about a book. And when I see "Review" with "spoilers" I certainly dont exepect a weak 2 paragraph plot summary- basically the inside cover with the key plot details included. Review means an actual intelligent commentary on why/how the book was great/sucked. Hitch a ride on the clue train buddy.

I mean come on! "I strongly recommend this book, but note that this is not a quick read: you have to assimilate this book to appreciate the wide scope. Good reading!" is NOT a review.

Kudos to Gibson for figuring out how to put on the brakes. I also wonder how long before "footage" starts showing up.

  13. UPS may not totally be to blame on How Not To Ship Computers · · Score: 1

As a former UPS worker (I delivered packages during the winter season while a student) it has been my experience that UPS workers are for the most part very considerate of packages. We took great care delivering anything that was obviously a computer, electronic, marked fragile, etc. If a package was damaged on arrival we made sure to make note of it in the delivery record so where the damage happened could be traced. I would also think that this might have happened enroute to the US, non-US facilities tear up more packages. By the looks of things you did not insure your package either. That is probably the least intelligent thing you can do, since you have no legal recourse at all. Packing it yourself may also have been a bad idea. In the future you may want to use a prefessional shipping store where they use things other than styrofoam peanuts. Peanuts suck for holding computers. A computer in a pile of peanuts is not stable and will wreak havoc on the box and itself as there is NO supports. The best way to ship something that heavy is to crate it in wood or use the original styrofoam shipping parts. I have shipped my computers numerous times the latter method via UPS and have never had a problem.
