how much stolen, 'recycled' and counterfeit stuff is floating around the medical supplies market. When people are capable of counterfeiting aircraft hardware and putting hundreds in danger, why wouldn't they pursue similar profit margins in a much more loosely regulated industry, say tissue trade? It's enough to make me want a bunch of nanoscale robots with tiny weapons floating around in my body. I mean one never knows when one might be subject to violation via the warez of these body partz and medical supplies sleezoids.
It's bouncing around a lot. We don't see this 'in the news' because image stabilization is used with TeeVee cameras and other optics. Image stabilization does not work with gun sights. Sure, the whole weapons platform could be stabilized, but imagine all the hydraulics, gimbal mounts, servo-motors, etc. Lots of weight for a Helicopter.
there was no Chinese filtering of the internet (China I/O).
So, this can hardly be the "beginning of the end". Sheesh article dude.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Chinese culture has a long histroy and tradition of 'indirect' communication. It's so ingraiined that rarely will anyone say anything directly. Everythig's an allusion and the allusians change.
It's impossible to censor.
As with the rest of the world, communication does no good without education. Tke your radical followers of Islam/Christianity who have no education beyond their leaders interpretation of the Koran/Bible. All the communication in the world isn't going to make them 'better world citizens'. Censored or not, internet access in China offers opportunity for education about the world and it's different cultures. The result? People who think. These folks will communicate just fine, even if certain words and phrases are filtered.

"Sun continues to see a sharp rise in it Opteron system sales."
I'm not surprised given the superior technology of the Opteron and Intel's monololistic exploitation of 'tie-in'. Now that AMD has the gun and bullets (not just a smoking gun) to prove this in court, we'ss learn just how powerful Intel really is.
I expect to see Intel exploiting the DRM aspect of it's products and national security vs AMD arguments along with PROOF of unlawful trade practices.
This is gonna be better than the OJ trial!
AMD has been gathering vidence and buildoing strategy for this suit for some time. Why now you migh ask? Well AMD is building fab capabilities. They expect the lawsuit to close favorably at the same time they are able to meet the pent up demand.
If you're a gambler, AMD stock beats the hell out of SCO for a 'bet on the courst' investment. Personally I'm surprised as hellthat AMD stock hasn't doubled since their strategy has surfaced...
If any group should be aware of this, it's slashdot readers.
This is the problem with having so many frigging laws. Instead of thinking, 'is this moral, is this just, what would the neighbors think?', people become brainwashed into thinking, 'is this legal, can I get away with it?'
we had these squibs in the sensitive electronics. tampering would set off a small explosive or thermal charge and destroy the 'secret bits'. It's much less expensive to do pyrotechnically. Pyro can be safe too.
the bullshit 20% actually delivered that the SPRINT CDMA2000 1XRTT ended up being (some 20-30kbps on a good day with the rare burst at 70kbps) AND if it were $40/month, I'd drop my broadband cabloe and go with the EVDO. As it is, I can live with those few times that a WiFi connex isn't available.bb
Nodding like an idiot while your doctor or auto-mechanic baffles with his trades' jargon is one extreme. Garnering the knowledge of their trades is another.

Hell, my 70+ YO mom knows how to look at email headers and recognize bent URLs. It's not rocket science. I mean, if a chicken can learn to play the piano, why can't an old geezer remember to look at an email header?
Keep them locked up in the house with the gizmos. When they hit their teens they'll rebel by heading off on flyfishing trips, trapping racons, and cooking possums in the backyard in an old cast iron pot.
Kids just do that.
If your goal is to turn them into geeks, you need to take them camping and fishing NOW!
seriously, just do stuff with your kids. mine 20 and 21 head off for sailing fishing and crabbing every chance they get. they've just recently discovered NYC and plan a couple of weeks exploring this summer. both ride bicycles for local transportation. one is off to Europe for a year this fall. they got their sense of adventure and doing things as little kids. we took them camping, sailing, and fishing and taught them to navigate around the city(Atlanta) using mass transit when they were little.
Smoking cigarettes. Draining vodka glass juxtaposed with dress coming off attractive female. Mating dogs. Pigs turning into BBQ. Hell, even PETA will be able to afford a stop action billboard of chickens being scalded alive.
sub 384kbps upstream BW on USA 'broadband' service is blocking a huge opportunity for small scale P2P broadcasting. Heck, BW is so tight that decent quality stereo audio via distributed distribution is impractical nigh impossible...
of course you won't be seeing any upstream broadband, even though it's technically possible and as cheap to add to docsis 2 systems as additional downstream. why? because it foils the 'we are in control of broadcasting' mindset of the providers.
what we need is some rules similar to early telephone de-reg that allow 3rd parties to tilize cable channels just like they use telephone infrastructure.
it's the big town bazar... for every way to make a buck, there will be some who are willing to exploit it's got nothing to do with the form of government or business Enron, the restaurant that doesn't charge sales tax on cash purchases, adware-spyware,...that's life. Even the good old CCCP had its share of off books trading at all levels of 'controlled' production. Does anyone remember the nicked IBM XT and AT boards that were sneaking out of reclamation?
or Italian Arum live in my Atlanta GA back yard. They have already bloomed, lost most of leaves, and are showing seeds. They make good winter foliage plants and do well in well drained rocky soil (old cementatious roofing shingles here). It will pretty much become invisible in another month and not show again until fall.
Because the FCC WILL be mandating that all 'non-broadcast' distribution be in 'analog' format!
Seriously, I gurandamntee that there will be a move on the part of 'bought and paid for FCC' to restrict competition by non-broadcast 'distributed distribution' via the internet or broadband wireless cooperatives. Imagine a network of 100mbps wireless distibution using cheap OTC hardware. It's a realistic scenario in NYC. The talent, energy, and audience are all there and to me, it's a surprise that it hasn't happend yet!
Whqat justification will they use? Why 'the poor' and 'homeland security' of course. Any distribution mechanism that threatens broadcast is a danger on both fronts. "Why just look at all the money the TeVee folks have invested in digital broadcast. If they go out of business, poor folks won't be able to watch homeland security TASERing domestic terrorists and might get the idea that they can join the revolution!"
The split, Mr. Cringley, is appliance versus tool.
Most people when asked, "why do you need a computer" will answer, "email, internet, taxes, photography".
Why do you need a wristwatch? "To tell the time".
Most people don't care what's inside the watch and most don't care what's inside the computer. The major differention between competing products in the applicance market is style. Most consumers don't even consider ergonomics!
The 'consumer' market for computer as appliance is huge, the market for computer as tool is much smaller. Apple wins on style. UI, ergonomic, and packaging. IMO, the Apple package on Intel is the death of MS. *IX will kill it on the tool front.
Now why would they merge? I can think of two reasons...Economy of scale and exit strategy for Jobs. Fact or not, in SJ's mind, Apple can not survive, as it is, without him. Apple-Intel, can or at the least, he'll end up with more $ than he can figure out how to spend...

It's because the same companies you are buying your service from are also in the content distribution business. Your content is a THREAT!
if Linus is a true visionary futurologist
something like
a software version of
WalMart
beating suppliers into submission until wecome full circle to one huge vendor and a cornucopia of small speciality suppliers?
Does Bill G and company have the bux to take over software distribution in the area of commodity functionality?
Has he had that vision?
Yet?

THe problem with limited US bandwidth is that the time shift incurred in building the net is discouraging to new members.
You need somewhere between 2X and 3X content bandwidth to build and allow people to jmp on and off with ease.

to cool the body?
Drink a lot of water and eat alot of hot peppers. This makes you sweat. Add a fan to aid in evaporation and whammo, you're cool.
