This is the oldest argument against global poverty ever...

If everyone in the USA/world/wherever had to quarter (or more) their income, give up their toys, move into a smaller house, and change their entire lifestyle in order to bring everyone to the same level, that would not be paradise by your definition for anyone.

If the grandparent were to feel that giving 50% of his yearly income to the poor and struggling with his house payment is his paradise, then he can see it that way.

There will always be someone suffering that you can help, but at some point you have to draw a line and enjoy your life despite that.

Q: How do Bose speakers sound?
A: Take some decent speakers and put a box over them.

    Anyone else know any others?

Slightly on-topic: I can see why Bose is rated so high, their resale value is about the best in the consumer speaker market. A lot of people trust the brand and are very happy to see what they can sell them for. If you dont care about the sound they put out (or you truly think that your Bose speakers are The Best), then Bose certainly deserves the rating they got.

Who is your favorite bigtime AMD system builder? Imagine them moving to Intel because MS, the MPAA, RIAA, and whoever else wants features that AMD doesnt offer. That is a lot more lost money than a marginal number of DIYers looking at Intel vs AMD benchmarks.

AMD will follow suit as soon as they start losing big money by not offering the same "protection" as Intel and everyone else.

I think the closest thing that would fit in such a case would be the Via Epia-based system.
Built-in everything (even the CPU) on a tiny motherboard. Theyre small, quiet, run cool, and are relatively cheap.
The rub is that the CPUs are the "less power, less heat, less performance"-type of processors, and I am not certain if they can handle 720p material (or much less upscale and deinterlace non-HD files.).

I've been looking for a good tiny cubeish HTPC, or one that looks like a modern dvd player (slim, but with a large footprint). Does anyone make those, or do the majority of HTPC-owners still prefer to have PC-looking computers sitting next to their home theatre components?

    Unfortunately not.

In purchasing this game, I was hoping for sort of a F.E.A.R. + Red Faction kind of experience. It is kind of a little brother of that collaboration. Not bad, and it takes some time to get there (level 1 is so short, and level 2 is basically an FPS version of Metal Gear Solid 3), but it picks up on level 3.

Mind that it is only $40 MSRP, so if you have a few bucks to spare and are looking for something just to occupy some time, its a decent buy.

  23. HK Cinema on George Lucas Predicts Death of Big Budget Movies · · Score: 1

I have long been annoyed with hollywood and the trend of remakes, so much that years ago I began enjoying HK cinema as my primary movie source (and to a lesser extent, japan, thailand, and korea).

There are plenty of fantastic movies that have come out of HK, japan, and other asian countries. These are movie industries where $40Mil (USD) is considered "big-budget", the 3d effects are sometimes laughable, but the stories are fundamentally different than what we get from hollywood. No, they are not all kung-fu movies, and they are not all great, but they do latch on to trends that you dont really see here in america. There was a big gambling movie trend years back that resulted in some great classics (God of Gamblers, All for the Winner). The Triad genre is relatively packed, but with more good than bad. Infernal Affairs is being remade (surprise, surprise!) by hollywood.

Give the asian film market a chance if youre tired of hollywood's tired formula.
