  1. You're welcome on System Administrator Appreciation Day · · Score: 1

I'd love to see what happens when I just sit on my ass and let things break on the network. Maybe that would put things into perspective.

I guess it's a matter of: when it works, thank the boss for putting such a good system in the place. When it breaks, blame the admin for doing a bad job.

They only notice your work when something goes wrong.

  2. golly! on IE7 Bugs and Reviews · · Score: 1

It looks and acts like firefox, based off of what i saw in the review. How long ago did microsoft release IE6, or even XP for that? I'd really love to see something totally innovative. A few features in Windows Vista sound that way, but not really. It's just sad to see microsoft copy off of what firefox already offers, instead of trying to think outside the box and add something totally new and useful that nobody ever thought of before. But at least they have google in their search box. I was surprised by that, actually. I would have thought microsoft to lock the user into MSN search.

Then again, that might be a neat idea. Mounting a few camera's on each planet to get THEIR perspective of the universe. Well, planets that could actually support a camera. A giant ball of gas is hard to mount something onto.

  4. neat! on Optimus Keyboard With OLED Display Keys · · Score: 1

FINALLY. An idea that makes sense. I would love to get my hands on that keyboard. switching between dvorak and QWERTY would be a breeze. plus games would be easier to play. and yes. that IS an OLED display on each key. which means each key can change design. So no, your not locked into any key icons (such as the internet explorer one) Each key can change, dynamically. since it is it's own little display. This keyboard would be great. for a lot of stuff. like teaching people how to type. or creating custom keyboards without much fuss. or security, even.

  5. what about surgery? on Vein Patterns to Verify Identity · · Score: 1

If someone receives hand surgery or something, then I suppose they would have to re-submit their hand, right? I just hope it doesn't end up in some emergency situation. Like you get shot in the hand, then need to run away from the dudes and hide in a room that is protected by this device. Since I doubt you'd be able to get in! Then again, with other systems, you could always get your eyeball taken out.... or fingers cut off...

In the end, I think this is more an important step into things. I think all this technology will lead to a method that makes sure you are who you are. and that just cutting off a finger or something won't work. So you yourself would have to be there, in tact. And maybe even count who else is there.... or messure your heart rate.... I think if there were a bunch of checks that need to be done to ensure that the person entering is the only one... or that they aren't scared or anything.... Well.. Something like that is sure to come.

  6. Re:I'm not surprised on Verizon Pulling Plug on Free Wi-Fi in NYC · · Score: 1

Well, fiber is actually more expensive to keep up. What with the personel, the cost of fiber, the great deal of effort that goes into termination of them.. I terminate my own fiber ends. Unlike crimping an RJ-45 connector onto cat 5, this can take quite some time to do one end. It takes me maybe an hour to do one end and get it free of scratches. Copper is easier to slap in.

But your right about everything else. And I'm sure they want to move everyone to FIOS. Even though the cost of fiber is more, they will be pulling in more customers, offering more services, and in the end, be making more profit.

I wish comcast would get up to speed and start doing fiber to the home, as well.

  7. I'm not surprised on Verizon Pulling Plug on Free Wi-Fi in NYC · · Score: 1

In the end, I think it will come down to Comcast Vs. Verizon. In the near future, they will both be able to offer the same services. It's just a matter of one or the other.

This move by verizon however, makes me lean towards comcast. Verizon was on the bandwagon to prevent PA from implimenting free Wi-Fi (except in philadelphia) which is not very nice of them at all.

Granted, comcast has done it's fair share of bad things. But I think verizon's greed is getting bigger, since they now charge more for my DSL. Unless I sign a contract, which is just nuts. There is no need for me to sign a contract with them, no logical reason on MY end except it'll be cheaper. But it cuts out freedom from changing when I want, without penalty.

That and their pay-as-you-go wireless costs at least $1 a day, no matter if you use it or not. Also a joke.

Sorry to rant, but verizon has been getting under my skin recently. I'd really love to see comcast come along and play angel... maybe even start to offer free Wi-Fi access.

I personally can tell the difference between a sotre and a piece of software. I think this is getting flat out stupid. Like how companies are trying to patent certain sections of the human genome. Which means if you want to work on a cure for cancer and part of where you need to go is owned by them, you need to get permission and the such to do work there. Now, the human genome is in everyone. and yet the patent office seems to hand out stuff like candy. So I really do hope a court just laughs at this. Because it's so... bloody stupid. And II don't see how they could receive damages from it. Aside from the search engine thing, but then again that's probably become a more relavant result.

"sorry, i'm too much of a whimp for jail"

I just think that 4 years in prison is a bit much for just swapping movies. A fine I can understand. But jail time? That's a bit much, I think. Because in the end, they aren't really hurting anyone. It's not like they are physically stealing stuff, which could hurt a company directly. But since it's in digital, all they are losing is money that they could have made, in theory.

  11. Re:Legal download of copyrighted material. on Crackdown on BT Users in Hong Kong · · Score: 2, Interesting

That's a good point. I suppose it could be argued either way. I think if your copy was too beat up to play, that it would be within your right to go and download another copy of it. Though they would probably still get after you for it, it would (I think) be legal, since your just replacing a broken copy. "They" already got money from you for it.

  12. smartness on Crackdown on BT Users in Hong Kong · · Score: 5, Insightful

4 years in prison? I can understand thieves and murderers doing prsion time, but some dude uploading a movie on the internet? Kinda a waste of jail space, I think. That and he (or she) won't really fit in, because there are plenty of decent people who swap movies and music.

aside from that, is it just BT users in general, or ones who were found to be swapping illegal content?

  13. Finally! on Safari Passes the Acid2 Test · · Score: 1

I've been waiting for a browser that would finally comply with the standards. I was expecting something like firefox to pull it off. Even though I use safari, I was willing to switch over to firefox if it began to support that standard.

I'm surprised that microsoft hasn't complied with it. At the same time I'm not, though. Microsoft sets quite a lot of standards just by making it a company standard... such as microsoft office is semi-standard. And hardware vendors need to meet microsofts requirements for windows to work on their hardware. But I suppose since it's the web, their weight doesn't hold true. On top of that, their browser isn't very good to begin with.

In an ideal world, though. IE would be compliant with the standard, since so many people use it.

Eitherway, I'm glad to see safari was first out the door.

  15. Good idea on Microsoft To Add A Black Box To Windows · · Score: 0

This could actually work out really well. Might even make microsoft's OS stable as a rock. But that's the thing with microsoft. They have good ideas, but it's how they go about it that tends to fall out. So I think it will be a matter of using the blackbox info, and applying it to the OS, instead of just ignoring it.

Sure, there is a bit of privacy issue. But I think you need to choose which is more important. Less privacy for a (hopefully soon to be) more stable OS, or the same crashing piece of junk for a little more. Throw in spyware and the such, and privacy is already down the drain.
in the end, I think this could be a good move for microsoft. But time will tell.
