Do you know the actually benefits of CCTV cameras?
This reduces all kinds of crime, muggings, beatings, rapes, burglarys etc.
I don't really care that I appear on CCTV cameras because I have nothing to hide. If i'm walking home on my own or in a small group after the pub at night, I know damn well that I'm safer and I'm Less likely to get attacked by a hord of drunken wasters.
People who winge and moan and CCTV cameras are obviously either, paraniod, have something to hide, or just plain stupid. The privacy bit is outweighted by the benefits - a saver environment where people can pass - day or night.
Stop trying to create conspiracy theories, and look at the known benefits.
I do care about privacy, but CCTV outweighs the disadvantages... *safer* environment for *all*.
Yes, unfortunately, CCTV does push crime out to other parts of a town, or to different towns where there are no CCTV cameras - but these are problems that need to and will be addressed.
what are you on?
ActiveX will not replace Java applets - why? ActiveX is too insecure. ActiveX is windows only.
Java applets are platform independant. Get into the real world - not everyone wants to run windows, microsoft webservers - when there are better solutions (weblogic etc)- AND cheaper solutions such as Apache.
Unix is mature. Windows is NOT mature.. it still changes too much and its still too insecure to be true.
"Give Windows another 5 years and then we talk"
crap. I heard this time and time again.. its still not right is it?
what business is it of microsoft. Surely this is a case of double standards.. microsoft does not like governments interferring with their business, therefore microsoft should keep out of governments policy.
They probably don't like it because it makes it more expensive and life hard for them to have an office in austrialia...
However, enough of ms bashing.. reading the article, it seems like it makes it hard for any software company to run a business: ie, lack of IT skills to recruit local staff, infrastructure, piracy, lack of internet access and generally, makes life for businesses harder there than other places in the world.
Austrialia may have messed up a lot of things, i don't know. But at the end of the day if it hurts the country due to the governments policies then sobeit. They will learn it due course.
Austrilia however, a couple of years ago, relaxed their immegration rules to help the IT shortage their - they were targetting people in britain and the rest of europe.
They will get their.. slowly.
At last, this should bring an end to the poor file conversion between PDA, PC (plus others). High time this happened. Also better integration between other devices such as mobile phones syncing to pdas and PC. Such software would now be easier to write (though once the connection has been made)
If you look on the syncML home page (which is linked from its founders - Psion), you will notice one company that isn't supporting it... Microsoft. But then, if you think about it, if microsoft did support syncML its applications, they would loose an advantage they have over other companies - microsoft know the exact file formats and therefore can sync 100% successfully between microsoft software and its PDAs. It would be of no interest for Microsoft software to convert to other PDAs 100% successfully.
(yes I know, correctly, converters do quite a good job of it)
Also, there is a spec for Linux which is also complete (again, see the syncML homepage).. so maybe for us Psion owners, we will be seeing, perhaps, PsiWin for Linux:->> For other PDA owners, better sync between PDA and Linux.

Astronomers say reports that the Earth would be struck by a small asteroid in 2030 were wildly exaggerated.
Less than a day after sounding the alert about asteroid 2000SG344 a revised analysis of its orbit says it will in fact miss the Earth by three million miles.
Astronomers are still watching the object, which was discovered in September and thought to be a mile (0.6 km) across.
Some scientists have criticised the way the information was released before it had been thoroughly confirmed.
Threat rating
Asteroid 2000SG344 was the first object to have a threat rating of greater than zero on the 0-10 Torino scale of threatening object from space.
It was discovered on 29 September by astronomers David Tholen
and Robert Whiteley using the Canada-France-Hawaii 3.6-metre
telescope on the island of Hawaii.
Shortly thereafter, pre-discovery observations taken in May 1999
by the Linear sky survey were also identified.
On Friday the International Astronomical Union issued an alert
saying that the object had about a 1 in 500 chance of striking the
Earth on 21 September 2030.
No object has ever been rated with so high a chance of impact.
Had it struck our planet the results would have been devastating, an
explosion greater than the most powerful nuclear weapon.
Sky survey data
After the announcement astronomers began looking at sky survey
data to see if the object had been picked up but not recognised in
earlier observations.
It was found and its past position allowed a more accurate
calculation of its orbit to be made.
The result: in 2030 it will miss us by three million miles, or 12 times
further away than the Moon.
The new orbit reveals a slight risk of a collision with the Earth about
2071 but it is thought that when the orbit is better known that risk
will disappear as well.
Currently asteroid 2000SG344 is about nine million miles (15 million
km) away and getting more distant.
'Premature and alarmist'
Because 2000SG344 is in a similar orbit to the Earth it has been
suggested that it might be an old Saturn upper stage rocket of the
type that was used in the early Apollo moon missions.
If it is man-made and did strike earth the effects would be very local
and limited.
Some scientists have criticised the IAU and Nasa for releasing
warnings about the asteroid only for them to be rescinded less than
a day later.
Benny Peiser of Liverpool John Moores University said it was
"extremely unwise" of them and the warning was premature and
alarmist.
CCTV is a very good idea... don't be so paranoid. Cuts crime on streets - attacks, muggings, so you feel more safe out on a night at 11pm, without being worried about walking down a street alone during the night. What is so bad about that.. it is only good. Too many people with (stupid) conspiracy theories..
"The fact of the matter is, Microsoft practically single-handedly turned the PC from the haven of 31337 tech-savvy "gurus" to a domain where anyone could use a computer to browse the internet, write letters and play games."
Utter crap. There were games companies, before microsoft started to market games (other than flight sim), Netscape came before microsoft IE. You don't have to use windows to browse internet. Other companies produce consistancy better products than microsoft - remember: large sales do not equal good product - just a popular product which isn't the same (especially when you have a near monopoly).
Erm, you do not need to use windows or have any microsoft software to play games, browse internet, etc etc. At the time windows 2 was around, there was Digital Research's GEM GUI. at this time, Gem was far better than windows, and if developed, i am sure it would have been a far better solution than windows. Also, DR DOS, Novell DOS was consistantly better than MS DOS, such as (Novell DOS 7) pre-empetive multitasking.. christ, it took microsoft several years after this to get windows to do this.
If it wasn't microsoft, another company would have achieved what microsoft have done.
So please, microsoft did not make the PC. There were lots of other companies around who's software ran on different versions of dos other than windows. Now, PC is just more than windows.
psion are wonderful devices... easier to enter data than psion, or pocket pc.
Psion (not revos) are not dependent on a PC being around.. you don't need a PC - keyboard - easy entry, good email, web browser, good basic wordprocessor etc. Palms are much more depedent, due to the time it takes to enter data using grafiti.
Good battery life, 16meg ram..
I'd never consider a palm or pocket pc because Psions can do so much more.
Well, what is so special about a pda that doesn't crash.. again, microsoft are way behind the times.. My psion has *never* crashed on me. Not once have I had to reset it.. how long have psion 5's been out? how old is that O/S - years old - and microsoft haven't even achieved a good ultra stable palm top o/s yet.
moan , moan , moan moan.. does it ever stop. This version of netscape is Beta... hence the name.
Mozilla.org hasn't even started on performance enhancements... once this has been done, i'm sure, netscape will render far faster than IE.

>The activation script is hideous- lots of >graphical glitches that remind me of student >written X programs. what do you expect from a beta product, bug free product?
I agree with you up to a point, but, do you want Linux to become more popular? A major desktop O/S? At the moment it is not, it won't attract the average windows user while its image is one of "hard to setup","hard to use".
Linux will need to become easier to use to survive - why do you think Windows is popular - attractive, and easy to use for the average user. At the moment Linux is doing well, but needs to improve. GUI interfaces will attract non geeks. Otherwise, linux will remain to be a geeks platform.
Therefore, giving a GUI installer goes a small way towards the goals that i've said above.
By all means have two installers, a text based and GUI installers...
It makes it more attractive to non geeky users... if they see a GUI installer, they'll think its easier to install rather than a text based system.
Text based installation systems usually give the impression of an outdated, user unfriendly program / operating system.
Remember, linux needs to aim towards non geeks.. therefore if such users see an attractive installation, they'll think its easy to install and use, based on their usage of Windows.
OK, it may not add towards better installation functionality, but its the presentation that counts.
is there really any point in releasing a new version instead of an incremental release, say, 6.2
I could understand Mandrake 6, new kernel 2.2.. Mandrake should really wait until kernel 2.4, XFree 4 come out at least, which isn't too far in to the future - as well as new drivers, such as those from Creative... OK, you get obtain them anyway, but its much nicer being able to install new drivers with a new version of Linux instead of hunting around on internet.
Do the new features really justify a new version number? It implies a major release, but to be honest, I can't see that it does...
remember a couple months back, RedHat wanted their site to be an internet portal for linux... this must be the result. Hence, the reason why it looks like Yahoo, Excite and every other web search / portal out there.
I do think this sort of design is getting rather boring... whats happened to originality? in another 2 years, are every commericial site going to look like this? Look at Sun, Borland, Microsoft... there are quite similar in some ways.
This could be a good thing, since there are not many graphics, not many stupid java applets to halt your computer for 2/3 minutes.. the result: a site that doesn't take an age to load.. simplicity is best, IMO.
boring it may be... efficient it is, easy to find things you want instead of having to spend 20 minutes searching the site for what you want...
looks as though microsoft could be backing off, or Intel telling microsoft where to go?
Remember in the trial, "bill gates was livid (spelling?) when he heard that Intel were developing software for non windows platforms".. words to that affect.
Well, well, now Intel are making chips for non Windows platforms... and good thing to... especially after Intel investing in Linux etc.
So, is this a sign that the WinTel period is over? Have Intel found that they don't have to follow Microsoft like a lemming...
or Just a result of the Intel Trial, and Microsoft DOJ trail? In that Microsoft aren't going to be so pushy anymore?
or just..probably... just because such a applicanes are getting more attractive, and Intel want a part in it... (why are the tags shown - in preview with HTML Formatted option??!!)
GT could have been another Loki. If they had released Linux binaries in the same box as Windows versions, they may well see increased sales, and through possible feedback, would see that Linux would have a modest usage.
GT, seeing there is a market, albiet, small, would be encouraged to release more linux games. A la Loki.
If Loki can survive on Linux games, then other companies can as well. All the software houses moving into Linux software, being applications or games, will likely see profitability while Linux is growing fast. This is the time to establish yourself in a linux market, not two years down the road when its common practice.
Also, such companies will gain respect (if they release good software, not duff), as Loki have found. Respect from consumers means > sales > money.
It does need companies to take a risk, if the risk pays off, companies will do well. Linux has been growing for too long (year plus) for interest to suddenly die away. If linux was a fad, Linux would have faded away by now.
Also, people will see more Linux games on the shelves, and will see linux as a mainstream OS where you can do wordprocessing etc, and also, play games.. The linux image of geeks, and nerds will disappear, which will encourage "non-techies" to try linux out.
most pc magazines are crap and geared towards windows soley. There are a few exceptions to this, which are PCWorld - which has many O/S featured (one page only though), and better, PC Plus which has regular linux articles. Linux Answers is now out (whether it continues is unknown, thats for future publishing to decide).
I want to read about other O/S, like alot of other people.
On every other page, its adverts... yes. great, i buy a mag for contents not to read adverts. i'd buy computer shopper or micromart for advert reading.
As for PC Magazine not doing well, i'm not surprised, it has to be the most boring PC magazine in existence.
most pc magazines should be called Windows magazine, ie, What PC = what windows, PC Gamer = Windows Gamer, PC format = Windows Format
PC's are not just about windows!! PC Magazines aren't intouch with latest computing trends, if it were, linux would be featured more. If magazines did keep in touch with computer users, they may find themselves being more popular.
Not everyone has web access, and telephone charges can be expensive. So, I'd rather pay for the magazine price, where I can read again and again, without paying for reading its content through phone charges.
people who write such viruses, are normally very good programmers and have a lot of knowledge about machine code and a pc's workings. You have to admire how much they can squeeze into such a small space of code
Unfortunately, Viruses authors are misguided, and just cause hassle for all. They would probably make good low level programmers
However, they do provide a market place... for norton, Mcaffee and the other companies who sell virus apps... so, in a way they do provide jobs for people... however, at the end of the day, there is no justification for making misery for people.
Instead of releasing viruses in to the wild, why not a "virus competition", that way they can show off to fellow virus writer geeks!!!!
Viruses will become more important during war time as well... hack into the enemies network, and put a virus on their networks.. much like Misilla (spelling) virus which can render machines to useless piles of metal by trashing the bios. Of course, you can also corrupt data as well as hard discs.
No I'm not justifying viruses.. but in a way, they can be useful... in the right conditions... and in some ways, you have to admire viruses for what they can do... viruses destructive nature is just stupid.. virus authors should grow up!
While there is a lot of media focus on Sun's purchase of Star division, it would have been an huge opportunity to be able to offer Star Portal sooner rather than later. Sun got coverage of StarPortal "for free" while it was promoting Star Office. Companies would have been more encouraged to look at StarPortal when they have just recently used Star Office. Unfortunately, StarPortal have been diluted to "vapourware" talk... StarPortal will be forgotten when interest in Star Office dies down.
Since StarPortal will be offered at the same time as the office 2000 version, sun will find itself overshadowed by Office 2000.
Realistly, Microsoft will steal the limelight, and Star Portal will be more of a side issue. Had star office been released in December, it would have been able to gain market share ahead of Microsoft. Companies who would have started to use Star Portal, may be less encouraged to use Office 2000 upon its release. It would be more established in the market and within those companies who choose to use it.
I really think this delay is going to cost Sun dearly - and gives microsoft an advantage - in terms of marketshare and time to spread its FUD of why we shouldn't be using competing products.

how can this be a serious news story? Logitech and other companies have been doing this sort of thing for years - Cordless keyboard / mice etc.
