  1. Re:Road signs on Is Sat-Nav Destroying Local Knowledge? · · Score: 1

You don't have to rely on it blindly, but I've found that most people do. When I'm taking a trip for a week, I print out directions from the hotel to the conference center. I consult them Monday and maybe Tuesday. Wednesday through Friday I have it down. I will admit to probably needing it on Monday the next time. Last time I rode with somebody with a GPS, I turned it off on Wednesday and he had absolutely no idea where to turn. Mind you, these directions were not hard. Turn off at the exit named for the town we're going to, make a right. That was all that was left. He bypassed the exit, even after I told him it was the correct one (and no, he wasn't waiting for the GPS. He knew it was off).

If you can use it the way you mention, more power to you.

We choose to go to the moon and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard. Because that challenge is one we intend to win."

I assume everyone understands the first two examples. The third arose, I am sure, because the speech took place in Rice Stadium. For those of you not familiar with college sports (shocking to suggest, I know) Rice has a student body roughly 1/8th the size of UT's and regularly gets creamed by their football team. Yet nearly every year the two teams meet, and out of 91 games, Rice has won 21. (And yes, the video clip of the speech does get played before every Rice-Texas game at Rice Stadium)

That's exactly the problem. It looks like cheating if there's only N logical ways to write something and N+1 students in the class. A dumb/mean (take your pick) prof once accused a friend of that very thing on a final exam, causing him to stress out and lose weight for 4-5 months before the case came before the honor council, where he was acquitted in the shortest deliberation on record.

Additionally, it only requires slowing to 45 and seems to work up to 65 or so anyway, which is the speed limit of the Beltway.

Once we got her away from the hole, she just picked up the live mole and was happily carrying it in her mouth. We took it away from her and had to drag her away. (It was in front of the woods down the street, so it wasn't messing up anybody's yard.)

I would consider lining everywhere there are cables with glue traps.

The problem with glue traps is you end up with a live rat stuck to the glue trap. What do you do with it now? Drown it, or leave it out for a cat somewhere. Humane trap, my foot. Plus, I've seen a rat work its way from stuck flat on its side on the trap to only one foot stuck, and I have no doubt given more time it would have gotten that off too.

It doesn't matter who made the drive, if you didn't have your important data backed up, you deserve to lose it if your drive goes out. I used to buy Seagate because I knew 5 years from the purchase date I would have a functioning drive, whether it's the same one or different. It is my responsibility to ensure the safety of my data. All HDDs are going to wear out eventually. With Seagate moving to 3 year warranties, I'll probably switch to someone else.

It would be a real pain when you're out doing tests on a drilling rig to make sure the one guy on the rig crew who speaks passable English is at your side every time you need to communicate. Other people design parts in plants, for example. Being able to actually speak to the people who will wind up using whatever you design will result in a much better product, since you'll learn the little things that are needed to make the product usable.
