It is a great achievement, even if they sacrificed many souls to build it.
China says the line will promote the development of impoverished Tibet.
Who says Tibet wanted China to 'develop' it? Maybe the Tibetans are happier without sweatshops and slave labor factories. Maybe it is better to just be impoverished and be in touch with nature, rather than be impoverished in some polluted, run-down pre-fab neighborhood.
I don't like having to edit the registry to remove things, it is annoying to say the least. Isn't there a better way of doing this?
VirtualWiFi Uninstallation
Q: I am unable to uninstall VirtualWiFi. Nothing seems to work. Is there a brute force method?
A: Yes. Go to the Windows registry using Start->Run->"regedit". Note that you will be modifying the registry at your own risk. It is always better to save a copy of the registry before modifying it. From the registry, look for all entries having VirtualWiFi, and delete them. This is better done in safe mode. Also run "VirtualWiFiSvc.exe -remove" to remove the service.
The U.S.S. Enterprise is chosen to be the test ship for the new M-5 multitronic computer system, a computer meant to be able to run a starship without human intervention. Also aboard for the test is Dr. Richard Daystrom, the inventor of the M-5 and an obsessive and unstable individual.
Initially the M-5 performs well, but when it decides to destroy a robot freighter, Kirk orders the test canceled. The M-5, however, protects itself and makes it impossible for it to be disconnected. The computer becomes increasingly erratic, a result of Dr. Daystrom's decision to impress his engram onto the computer as part of its programming. Starting a scheduled war games drill, M-5 uses the full arsenal of the U.S.S. Enterprise to attack four other Federation starships.
In a last-ditch appeal to the M-5, Kirk makes the computer realize that it has committed the sin of murder. Since Dr. Daystrom would be ethically abhorred at such an act, the M-5 is equally penitent and tries to commit suicide by leaving the U.S.S. Enterprise defenseless against a counter-attack by the remaining other starships. At the last moment, Spock and Scott are able to finish disconnecting the M-5 unit. Kirk keeps the shields down, gambling successfully that the attacking ships would not fire on an undefended vessel. Restoring communications next, the fleet is called off.
And for the Hermiston Police Department, having squad cars equipped with a wireless laptop means officers can work less overtime by being able to file their crime reports from the field.
Nothing in this article mentions safety or security, and the question must be asked:
How safe is this network? Can anyone intercept data running through it? What happens if your data is stolen because of it?
Just a thought.
If you are vigilant about protecting and updating Windows, you MAY not experience any major problems.
However, if you don't, it will become infected - which in turn provides jobs to those who can clean, fix and update these PCs. If Windows wanted to get serious about fixing their problems, it would be sad news for support people who charge by the hour to fix Windows' flaws.
Yeah it kind of sucks and I am not making an excuse for it by any means, but it does provide work for techies who may not find work otherwise.
The perfect or ideal computer will have the ability to protect and fix itself.
"There's a cat-and-mouse game going on between states that seek to control the information environment and citizens who seek to speak freely online," said John Palfrey, the director of Harvard Law School's Berkman Center for Internet and Society and a researcher with the OpenNet Initiative. "Filtering technologies, and the way that they are implemented, are becoming more sophisticated."
Not surprisingly, repressive governments have been eager buyers of those technologies.
Economy - overview:
Burma is a resource-rich country that suffers from government controls, inefficient economic policies, and abject rural poverty. The junta took steps in the early 1990s to liberalize the economy after decades of failure under the "Burmese Way to Socialism", but those efforts have since stalled and some of the liberalization measures have been rescinded. Burma has been unable to achieve monetary or fiscal stability, resulting in an economy that suffers from serious macroeconomic imbalances - including inflation and multiple official exchange rates that overvalue the Burmese kyat. In addition, most overseas development assistance ceased after the junta began to suppress the democracy movement in 1988 and subsequently ignored the results of the 1990 legislative elections. Economic sanctions against Burma by the United States - including a ban on imports of Burmese products and a ban on provision of financial services by US persons in response to the government of Burma's attack in May 2003 on AUNG SAN SUU KYI and her convoy - further slowed the inflow of foreign exchange. Official statistics are inaccurate. Published statistics on foreign trade are greatly understated because of the size of the black market and unofficial border trade - often estimated to be one to two times the size of the official economy. Though the Burmese government has good economic relations with its neighbors, a better investment climate and an improved political situation are needed to promote foreign investment, exports, and tourism. In February 2003, a major banking crisis hit the country's 20 private banks, shutting them down and disrupting the economy. As of January 2004, the largest private banks remained moribund, leaving the private sector with little formal access to credit.
I wonder what the executives at companies like Microsoft, Yahoo and Cisco feel about using their technology to aid oppressive regimes? The whole idea of information sharing and transferral is thrown out the window when you can no longer criticize your goverment or those in power. You then have a dumbed-down version of the software, with no reason to trust or believe anything you read through them since they are easily monitored, and easily censored.
Do the executives at these companies have any morals? How far must it go before they will object to censorship? Is their complacency indicative of their need for more sales or that they just don't care?
It is unfortunate that this techology is being sold to us so that we can 'see the magazine shelves in newsagents come alive with moving images vying for the customers' attention as they move along the aisle.' This to me sounds like keywords for annoying advertising.
I wish they would use this technology for anything OTHER than advertising. Ads for cars, beer and drugs are annoying enough without them 'jumping off the page' telling you about an erectile dysfunction solution.
A good argument for environmental conservation is the benefit to all mankind from the undiscovered riches (such as beneficial chemical compounds) of insects and plants. Instead of putting all of our faith and effort into man-made items and products, people should realize that environmental protection and economic growth/development are not mutually-exclusive.
"The challenge with Win XP was to give users new ways to use their systems, while retaining the features they had learned to appreciate from previous versions," says Chris Jones, corporate vice president of Windows Core Operating Systems Development.
"A lot of the value proposition of XP was, it's basically the same, with a new look, a new set of experiences around photos and music, and some new scenarios," Jones says. "But it had the new engine in it, and so it was just way, way more reliable."
Aside from virus and bug issues, Windows is not customizable enough right out of the box. Every copy looks the same with the same blue theme and it is getting tiresome. It should also update/protect itself automatically from outside attacks.
Windows did make computing cheaper and easier to access for the average human.

I am not sure how much people are going to enjoy space travel unless significant advances are made in providing for people's comfort.
