"Using photometry and spectroscopy, we could identify planetary features like oceans, continents, polar caps and cloud banks, and even detect biomarkers like methane, water, oxygen and ozone," said Cash.
This reminded me of Star Trek, Ep. 37 'The Changeling'
Nomad was sent out by Earth "in the early 2000s" according to Kirk on a mission to scout for life. Nomad collided with a meteor and was damaged and had lost a good portion of its memory until it encountered another probe, this one alien, with equally advanced artificial intelligence. The alien probe, which had the mission of sterilizing imperfections in soil for colonization purposes, merged with Nomad to repair one another. The convoluted mixup made Nomad think his duty was to sterlize anything that isn't perfect. This is what happened to the poor Malurians - they were killed because they were imperfect.

The player is helping to drive sales of Apple's more- profitable Mac personal computers. Mac shipments reached a five- year high of 1.24 million units, the fourth straight quarter shipments have topped 1 million machines, Apple said yesterday.
Interesting!
I wasn't arguing away the need for improvement, that will come from competition and choice based on demands of the users. If Linux is lacking certain features on commonly-used tools, they will have to create them before it will be accepted by most users. I just thought there was room for GAIM to be reworked and upgraded. Maybe someone who reads this will get a better idea on how to modify it and create something better than before.
PS Jilles, I really like the photo from London IV IMG_2362 taken on 9/25/05 11:16 AM of the castle with the moat, that is awesome! Someday I will build a castle and moat of my own:)

Not really, I suffer with a flash card Rio player now and I know its limitations (holds under 1GB.) Something with 100GB storage (or the ability to expand to that) would be great, if the price is reasonable.
Holy cow, the cached sites are even crashing, must be a must-read article.
Would be nice if you didn't have to attach a HDD by solder, would be better just to have an expansion slot for large capacity memory cards and/or the ability to attach an external HDD. With the Maxtor drive attached in this configuration, the Nano triples in size and you run the risk of screwing it up permanently.
If memory expansion/capacity is what most everyone wants, I am not sure why they haven't added a memory slot for the iPod? I also often wonder how long it will be before they have 1 terrabyte cards as a standard, say maybe 1 year from now?
If we are supposed to hold developers responsible for security flaws, why don't we hold politicians responsible when they give us false reasons for going to war, responding to disasters and evaporating budget surpluses?
In the world of corrupted politics today, it is hard to find ANYONE accountable for ANYTHING. Why should it be different for everyone else?
IBM invented the first 'PC' called Acorn. It had a 4.77 MHz Intel 8088 microprocessor, 16kb of memory (up to 256k) one or two 160k floppy disk drives and a color monitor. The price tag started at $1,565, which is close to $4,000 in today's dollars.
Too bad 'Top View' didn't fare as well.
I wonder what IBM's exact response was to Bill Gates showing them Windows?
"Thanks Bill, we'll call you, don't call us. In the mean time, have fun with your little program."
I am suffering with a Rio mp3 player that has an FM tuner and can be used as a storage device. The iPod is much cleaner looking, but I paid a lot less for the one I have and am satisfied with it for now.

Once all of these features are incorporated into one device with larger than 100GB of storage, I will buy one. For now, I will suffer as being not part of the iPod masses.
The article is interesting and is very informative.
My only objection is that I do not like playing games on a tiny screen using tiny buttons. Since most games nowadays are not just 'steer and shoot,' the complexity of the controls and intricacy of the graphics plays into the overall fun of the game.
I applaud the efforts to get better 3D graphics for mobile devices, but I don't think I will ever be wasting my time playing games on my cell phone. It is much more enjoyable to play a console system on a large projection TV. But of course that is just MY opinion.
How about a 300 GB device? It would also act as a external HDD.
Now that would be convenient!
Memory is cheap, for $599.00 why not maximize its storage size to make it a worthwhile 21st century product?
Slashdot got it nearly right, but a bit wrong: the Tango Project is about unifying the Open Source desktop, but it isn't by Steven Garrity and Jakub Steiner alone. Steven and Jakub presented it at the GNOME Summit in Boston over the weekend, but Rodney Dawes, Tuomas Kuosmanen, Anna Dirks (site currently down), and myself all had a lot to do with making it a reality. A few others helped out along the way too, such as Trae McCombs.
In addition, Tuomas recently posted on his blog a bit more about Tango: Remember, Tango is not "yet another theme", what I am even more interested in is to really look outside our "Gnome/KDE/Whatever" sandbox and try to fix the overall user experience on "Linux Desktop" - we need to co-operate really. Unified look and feel is one step in that direction, and a logical one for me as an artist.
Trillian works because of its simplicity, these companies need a standard IM protocol and then let the best interface win!
I prefer the stripped down versions like 'DeadAim' where only the most basic features work. I have no need for stock updates, sports scores and directed advertising. Is this too much to ask?

'Chinese officials say they want to land an unmanned probe on the moon by 2010, and also build a space station.'
this reminded me of the quote:
"That's no moon, its a space station."
Many insights to the moon could be gained from a new and sophistacated moon probe, I am not as sure about the benefits of the space station other than for scientific experiments and spacedocking practice.
The question now is: Should the US, Russia, EU, Japan and China all be obligated to share individual research and information acquired from each mission in the hopes to further the overall objective of creating reliable space travel?
Also, once some country lands on the moon, can they just claim it as territory and start building on it in any fashion?

Too complicated and too many devices to keep plugging in and swapping info....I know I am lazy.
And _when_ they come out with that, what "excuse" will you have next? (Just curious)
The price is too high? I will probably own one, since it might even replace several devices at once.
