The reason they're shooting it is to *try* to make it go off.
Typically this would be put in a bomb pit somewhere nearby. From reading the comments this is fairly common practice there. This one nailed it pretty well:

I'm almost the same age as Wil, so his insights and stories about growing up a geek all ring very true with me, there's a ton there to relate to.
Also I realized upon reading this interview with Rob and the age of Slashdot, that my daughter is 10 and I've been reading it for as long as she's been alive. Kind of scary but amazing stuff.

Damn...I didn't realize until I read your comment, but the long-running joke about "driving your Google to the Google to pick up the latest Google" is in its first steps to becoming an actual reality!
I don't know what their minimum requirement is, but I don't like to maximize my browser window, so I can see what's going on in the background. I have a large screen though, so most sites will fit in a window that's roughly 1024 across...not this site though!
And who doesn't love an article that's broken down into at least 5 separate pages? I know there's nothing I love more than clicking and waiting 5 times, just to read a single article.
They actually tried explaining this with the latest Superboy (who was a half-clone of Superman) by saying he has "tactile telekenisis." Basically the objects that Supes picks up are encompassed by this, and don't become susceptible to structural failure. It's lousy ret-conning, I know:) but the new Superboy actually has this ability, but a bit more enhanced. He can pick up an object, and also tear it apart/manipulate it.
"Is it not nonsense to compare the charge for dinner at the company cafeteria with dinner at a fine restaurant? It's a question of what you can do with that game machine. If you can have an amazing experience, we believe price is not a problem."
Okay, if every "experience" concludes with a "happy ending," it might be worth the price.

We already have white-noise generators in the ceiling of my dept, a call centre for a major corporate communications company. They do a nice job of dampening office echo, and creating a nice background noise that's also ideal for falling asleep to.
Other departments sound so quiet after this one. I prefer it.
I love Gaim for this very reason (not to mentiont the switching between the tabbed windows with ALT+1,2,3). One thing I do wish it allowed you to do is turn the "blinking window" off, when someone sends you a new message. I mean, I can easily ignore it, if I'm too busy to answer, but to be able to turn it off altogether, or just have it flash a couple of times would be extra nice.

I realize some sites have a "printable" link to make the article not as obnoxious if you want to print it.
However that's no justification why the article should be so poorly laid out to begin with.
