  1. Re:PHP on The Best First Language For a Young Programmer · · Score: 1

before you can avoid bad habits, you have to know what they are AND why are they bad habits.
Frankly, I've seen just as much - if not more - bad code in Java or any other language as I've seen in PHP. In my experience, PHP with its bad name keeps you on your toes when it comes to bad coding practices, it can also give you hands on experience with why one approach is better than the other, something that Java for example (or any language where best practices are already identified for you) can't do.

Just so you know, the Clipboard.getData() points to the AIR documentation which is a very different beast when compared to the Flash browser plugin. Also flash apps in a web page are subject to cross domain security policies (see: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/flash_player_9_security.pdf ), the added benefit is that the target domain is able to control who's allowed to make cross domain calls and who's not (by default no one is allowed, much like in a browser).

  3. future features in PHP on Official Support For PHP 4 Ends · · Score: 1

as a LAMP developer (where in my case P stands for PHP mostly) reading slashdot, I'm used to see a lot of PHP bashing whenever a story remotely related to PHP pops up. On this one there's hardly any PHP bashing at all. On a more on topic matter, dropping PHP4 support is great news, hopefully this will give the PHP team enough time to concentrate on what's missing in newest versions of PHP. This is my list:

    - speed (there's a Google SoC project on this, but more could be done for example calling a function has a lot of overhead)
    - >32bit machine independent integer support
    - large file support >2Gb
    - exceptions thrown by all internal functions

    what's your list?

It doesn't mean that the person actually has the skills.

The reason I moded you up was that I'm sick of the so called "intellectual" camp bashing other people's beliefs. I'm sick of the lame ass intellectual bullying, and your comment seemed to try to make a stand. I salute you.

In my opinion, for all this to work properly, it should be the first to get a new idea.
On the other hand we need to think hard if we really want IP protection. We see patent applications for the invention of fire or the wheel, which altho laughable, show a concerning trend: "we want to own any idea that others will fail to own".

Be reminded that human societies began true development and innovation once the sharing knowledge became widely available (one example is the end of the middle ages for European societies) not the other way around. Where "widely available" means available to most ppl as opposed to those with power and money.

URLs of your site should be preety, contain relevant words and be relatively short, ie http://example.com/webdesign/logo/price-quote-for-logo-design.html rather than http://example.com/siteengine.php?id_category=12&subcategory=93&articleid=112&lang=en&....

    5. Make sure that there are links on the internet that link to your site (to the front page, but also very important to sections inside you web site). Take time to build links: ie. when posting in forums make a habit of linking back to your site, especially if there's something on your site that is relevant to the discussion. When you do a website for a client, if possible add a link on the website, pointing to your website. Something like: "Web design by Your Company, Ottawa". Make sure to add the proper "title" attribute to links to your site and the links inside your site.

    6. Change you hosting company and get your own IP to host your website. (the shared IP on which your website might be running, could be marked as "spammy" especially if you're site is sharing it with other shady sites)
