Or perhaps this is being read incorrectly (the trend, not the article). I personally quite like organising my stuff into folders. I'll often store many sources together, be they source files, or pdfs/word/htm files which are related. Folders provide a simple, heirarchical method of organising files. I don't want to have to edit metafiles and such when storing files.
Better yet, instead of the death of folders, why not something which sits alongside side, like som sort of brilliant search capability? But seriously, while its a good start - does it need to go any further than apple or google have taken it? Do we really want power to be hard to get at?
Whoa, it sounds like *you're* the one with an axe to grind. First of all, the headline was misleading -- asking "top spot WHERE" is a totally valid question that the summary didn't address. The headline seems to imply that a market cap of $80b makes Google the biggest corporation period, when that is obviously incorrect.
but my point was that the author did not need to qualify' period' because of the largely accepted measure of market status. Is he wrong?
Anyways, as I said, you seem to be the one with an axe to grind; you sound like one of those people trying to defend their social privelege by whining about postmodernism and "moral relativism".
and by saying that you imply that you disapprove of social provlege. you too have an agenda so whats your problem? Is this your 'axe to grind'? Also, last time i check, moral relativism and postmodernism where the formost arguements in post-positivist discourse.
My apologies if I'm wrong, but that's how you came across.
i did not mean to sound whiny but being critical is and should be socially acceptable. To be otherwise is socially irresponsible, intellectually bankrupt, and PC crap. please don't shoot me down for sounding whiny - instead attack my arguements, that i don't mind. a personal attack I do.
also, at the bottom of a slashdot page the other day I read something along the lines of "those who have nothing to fight for will die for nothing." I think its pertinant.
Sure maybe. But you're still wrong.
You'd not contest that Microsoft is the market leader in OS's. Unless of course you measure it in employees, or developers, or the range of colours used in their desktops. market cap is a valid measure and your only defending yourself for the sake of being right. but your not. live with it. dickhead.
So you are suggesting then that everytime one makes a claim they should qualify it. It is ludicrous to even suggest this. It is common practice to scale business based on their stock market value. You sound like you've got an axe to grind.
For example, if I were to reply to an article stating that linux was better than windows you could respond,"Well sure in terms of speed and security. Or you could respond to the diametric opposite, "Well sure.
For commonly adhered to scales of measurement it is more than appropriate not to qualify statements. It would be ludicrous to respond to the claim "America is more advanced than Kalahari Bushman ethnic regions" by saying, "Well yeah, but not as far as tribal culture is desirable" is true; it is not in this sense that the author intended.
From what I've read, processors are already far faster than brain cells. Instead, what makes the brain unique is its massively parallel nature and the complexity of the connections between the individuals cells. What we'd need is a neural net with fuzzy connections. It would probably cheaper than buying one very fast computer to simpulate all the connections. Instead, a beowulf (first mention?) cluster with a bit of tweaking as to how processors operate and communicate (read 'a bit' = ' a lot').
The last time I checked, wars weren't won with large armies. The reason countries like America become super powers are there technological advantage. Taiwan has only recently gone into a defensive stance, even though China had an army over 1 mil. It was due to there technical superiority. Australia (20 mil popn) sits below Indonesia (280 mil popn) and has an army of 30 000. It is the power in south east Asia (with Japan, depending how you measure it). Again, not by nukbers but by the supeority of the technology.
I agree with you whole heartedly. When the nukes are flying we'll see which is easier, having a large army with missile defence capability, a disparate population, and liquid movemnent - or companies making backup.
I cant help but think, we've seen what the world did in response to S11. Lets see what they do to a national threat.
As a politics graduand I can assure you that in no model of relations are linux nerds mentioned (except perhaps neo-liberalism). If they were to be of influence it would be as a terrorist group. The problem is that nerds are distributed. So, tak for example pluralism in policy design, where policy is designed based on the influence of a number of groups such as intellectual elites. realism dictates that nations are only self interested, limiting the influence of expatriot nerds.
Sure, and AMD will beat Intel. The facts of life are this, just as Intel will be the market leader for MANY years to come, so will microsoft. Idustry leaders like these have many diverse products. The power of microsoft extends beyond market domination. They have a range of software with interoperability far beyond any opposition (I'm writing this on a Mac). Office products just work together. The reason any other networks work is because they're trying to be compatible with windows. The VAST majority of software is written for windows.
This is a little like people who'll say China is catching up on America. They're correct, it sure is. In about 50 years they will have caught up.
If microsoft topples, it wont be because of free software - maybe aided but not because. Probably a company like Apple will take the lead over anyone else. They have a superior product, the benefits of open source, an appropriate business model.
Don't even start me on this shit. I recently added one of those nifty "page last updated-3lines of code- scripts to the top of my blog.
I'm on a mac. IE for mac displays properly; firefox displays properly; hell, even sheera displays properly sometimes. Do you think safari does - you know, my main audiece? Balls! This is like the most simple script!!!
andt to make matters worse I can't read the letters at the bottom of this page to prove I'm not an automaton!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!
I've just had a brilliant idea. Maybe someone could combine two of these to create a... no, that's just getting silly.
But really, this sort of thing is important. People who play that many games need something to compensate for not being able to hold a steady relationship (Lara Croft at XXXXXfps doesn't count [not even as a quickie]).
Perhaps, coming from the other side, distros should advertise as preferring certain chipsets. for example, whilst Redhat may support a wide range of configurations, they could advertise they are 'Centrino ready.' While this would seem to cost the Linux distributer, it would also pay better dividends because many suppliers use that architecture; they'd have a wider audience. It would also take pressure off the producer, like HP who has to do the work for a smaller section of the market. If the work is being done at an earlier stage, such as Intel distributing drivers, it provides an economy of scale, as many manufacturers use the same chipsets.
I remember seeing an Xray of a person with a barbie stuck "up" them once. But that's nothing. I swear its true, I've also recieved emails of X-Rays of people with bullets, dildos, and even the eiffel tower. I can forward these incredible pics if you want them...
I picture it as being like the elevators, giving a happy hum, just to be serving you. It would really make ipods stand out against Sony and such if everyone knew your iPod enjoyed its role in your life.
It's all a microsoft conspiracy to prove that linux is the more insecure system - now vulnerable to the vast raft of windows insecurities. Muwhahahaha!!!!
I think that the motivation behind buying a mac is about more than just software issues. Which is to say, purchasing an apple is about the Hardware as well as the software. When I recommend Macs to clients its about such issues as them not having to worry about OS compatability issues, or having to tweak for optimal performance.
Windows on the other hand... To install Linux is about getting at the guts of the system and the high level of customisations and optimisation. Windows, having to cater for all the different hardware mades it complex. MacOS is more powerful having a smaller range. Also, if one is concerned with maximising performance, perhaps a mini is perhaps not the best buy.
I do applaud linux advocacy though, and for that reason I applaud this.
Maybe the author and I are really smart and so its immediately obvious to us what he means,
maybe he and I have a psychic connection and you're not allowed to join.
I thank I'll go email him and ask him

In the left corner weighing in at $60Billion dollars we have William 'Bill' Gates. In the right corner we have Patent Reform 'Bill'....

Once I get this in my MAC - well you just watch out linux users!!!

Thank you, I'll be here all week.
Is anyone else sick of hearing about SCO. (That was a lame attempt at a joke. I did RTFA.)

I could go on but my dinner is ready... sorry!
So with this thing I'll be able to tell when my next door neighbours husbands leaves for work? hmmm...

And yet, I predict Microsoft will at some point consider patenting vm technology, after which point they will sue Sun and everyone else. EVERYONE!!!!
