    I'm in linux and have mplayer but I don't have it compiled with theora support because I've never seen a need or want for it. recompiling to view. seriously I don't care who you are mpeg format is good, and not all wmv's work in linux. it is a rarity though. I prefer my movie's in a format that just works, on all player's.

    if they actually manage to blast us in 2007 with a desktop that doesn't require horribly huge systeme requirement's we'll be blasting back by the same time in 2008, and probably be even farther in 2009, and in 2010 there won't be something past vista's yet for microsoft.

    Counterstrike was hard for me to find (ebay). I bought a combo pack with Red Alert & Aftermath, maybe 3 years ago. I think they will do a Tiberian series before yuri.Though Renegade and Covert Operations are more likely.

    Last time I checked the Linux Kernel natively support's 32 processor's and Sun Solaris supports 128. I'm not sure about Datacenter because I think anyone using microsoft for any kind of server or datacenter is an idiot.

    I agree but shouldn't they have waited to do this until 1. There own antivirus is out (suggest as a replacement) 2. Neither are beta (antispyware and antivirus)

    Scientific end game? I read a few years ago Halliburton has a no bid contract to develop oil and mineral drilling (and the like) technology for mars. It's not about science it's about $$$.

    it is getting more plug and play. udev, is seeing to that. but the real problem is hardware manufacturer's only developing driver's for windows. if google was releasing it's linux. they might have the power to push manufacturer's to give us driver's. Gnome and KDE (either one) should be plenty ready for those point and click user's. Shell's shouldn't be changed however as that would alienate the old timer's and it would get crappy like dos, and for the original poster, if we replace grep with find? pray tell what do we replace find with? locate? then what do we replace locate with? search? don't change command's it wouldn't be pretty. I would shun a distrobution and so would many if they did that. create a utility for making aliases in the .bashrc if you want that.

    5 Days!!! don't do a stage 1. absolutely nothing to gain from it. especially since gcc-3.4 is stable now. but it's not on the livecd's yet. you'll probably end up recompiling the entire system anyway. it may also be a good idea to do a grp install. just to get a faster working system. you can alway's re-emerge them later. I have an athlon-xp 2200+ and although it might take 4 days to get the system to where it is now. It take less than 8 hour's for an install and a functional system. infact I think I get to reboot in 2-3 hours.

    oh and fedora core isn't vanilla-sources they create there own holes by modding the original kernel. I believe. I don't use red hat products so correct me if i'm wrong.

    let all those clever eyes look at the windows market... because there are more eyes in linux looking to close our security holes before they can get exploited than at microsoft or apple. or probably M$, McAfee, Symantec, Apple etc... combined.

    uh huh.... because microsoft doesn't look for hole's and they only close them once they're found. sure those security holes are there. they fix them as quickly as possible, but in the mean time everyone know's they're there. making it very hard to infect. because we know about it.     only firewall that might be able to do that would be a Level 7 firewall... and that requires a lot of processing power. also don't use MSN messenger use GAIM for example. and have gaim be the only application allowed through that port on the firewall. you would probably have to set up a linux box or something to do this however. Netfilter's iptable does have a level 7 filter now... not sure how well it works.

    hey spybot S&D has much better anti-spyware protection than Symantec. and it isn't a resource hog (unlike 90% of which are resource hogs, (ghost and paritition magic being there only good products) it's one of 3 application I use to keep spyware off windows. but then again I don't use windows much anymore (just linux, and we all know what spyware and viruses mean to a linux box).
