I have a tablet. And I used to think like you. Tablets would never replace laptops.
And I still think they won't. The thing is, I personally don't view tablets as 'small laptops' but rather 'large mobiles'. If you think of it that way, you get the clearest idea of what they're going to replace. You can't type as fast on a tablet , that's true. But if you want to read a document? Its brilliant. I can walk around, holding my Galaxy Tab in one hand, and I can sustain that for hours. I can watch videos on the bus. I can play games on it when I'm bored.
So no. Tablets won't replace laptops. But I think they'll replace Mobiles. Or rather fall in between. Carrying a 7'' tablet around is borderline. 10'' I'd say impossible.
Really? Are you going to carry around your 7" or 10" tablet to make phone calls? My cell phone can fit in my shirt pocket and my tablet will not and wasn't meant to replace it. I just bought a Barnes & Noble Nook Color, and it is meant to fulfill most of the functions of my old laptop, if possible. My wife who is looking to buy a 10" Netbook would buy an iPad instead if it had a keyboard and she can use it to login into her school's website. The millions of iPad, Nook Color and Android tablets owners aren't replacing their mobile devices. They are using their tablets to replace a lot of the functions of their laptops. The way I see it, tablets will replace low end laptops and high end laptops will replace desktops.
I'm familiar with the wikipedia article, and it's links. I have also read many studies, analysis and meta studies. It's become the classic 'You can't prove it's not true, there fore more study is needed' gambit. As used by Homeopaths, Moon landing hoaxers, and ghost hunters.

It would be a more rational argument to say it's healthier for that reason alone. the difference is pretty slight.
Yes, it's easy to use, store, and manufacture the sugar so it gets used a lot. Used to replace sugar.
And I am not arguing it's good for you, only that it's not different the sugar. So like sugar, eat it wisely.

Actually, recent studies have shown that HFCS causes the liver to go into fat storing mode. Also in animal studies, HFCS has shown to cause liver scarring and liver diseases that are very similar to liver diseases that alcoholics suffer from. I am sorry but HFCS is bad stuff. lots of legacy VB code. Some jobs run as fast or faster on Pentium D compared to a Core 2..
That's simply not true. A 2.6 GHz Core 2 duo beats a 3.0 Pentium D in every bench mark tests. The reason why the 2.6 GHz Core 2 duo totally outperformed the faster 3.0 GHz Pentium D is due to the fact that the new Intel core architecture performs more calculations, read and write tasks per clock cycle that the older Pentium cores. For example, The Pentium 4, Pentium D belongs in this class of processors, can perform 9,726 MIPS at 3.2 GHz. The Core 2 Duo ranges from 15,000 - 49,000 MIPS at 2.6 GHz. So, no way should a Pentium D out perform a core 2 Duo in any tasks.
is because it's only as good as Adobe implementation on your platform, and they and they alone decide whether your platform is worth sticking money/time into to make a better flash player. It's not a standard. Unlike a browser, no one else can go out and decide to make a better flash player (gnash ignored).
My 1.67Ghz G4 Powerbook to this day can only play flash videos extremely choppy and games hardly at all. It can play downloaded video or DVDs just fine.
I share your experience with Flash. I have a 3.2 Ghz hyper-threaded CPU that struggles with Flash content. Flash videos and games since Flash 10 are unplayable on my rig. I, for one, can't wait for Flash to suffer a horrible death.
I think it depends on several factors. 22 year old kids with a bachelors in CS from a state school are usually bright eyed and eager to learn. If they come from "prestigious" tech schools and "settle" on a company that isn't a household name, they are usually aghast that they aren't everyones manager a year into the job as they've over-engineered every piece of software they've been tasked to write and treat even seasoned veterans as if they don't know what they are talking about.
Also be wary of anyone with a Masters in Computer Science getting their first industry job. Be sure to grill them about why they aren't getting their Ph.D. Often it's because they were good enough to get to the Masters level but couldn't get into a Ph.D. program. Those kinds of people often end up being overly expensive dead weight as they try to turn their job into their own personal Ph.D. program.
A PhD is for teaching so if you don't desire to teach then a PhD is a waste of time, money and resources. Not everyone desires to teach or be heavily involved in theoretical research, but they would like to have a bit more theoretical and practical foundation and for those people the Masters degree is appropriate since it's a terminal degree.
Um, what are you talking about. Look at the Nexus One http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nexus_One 1 Ghz ARM CPU, 512 MB of RAM, and storage up to 32 GB with SD cards.
There is more to overall processor performance and system speed than raw CPU clock cycles. For example, an Intel 2.6 GHz Core-2-Duo outperforms an Intel 3.0 GHz Dual Core processor. Why is that? Simple, even though the 3.0 GHz Dual Core processor runs at a higher clock cycle the 2.6 Core-2-Duo performs more calculations/instructions per cycle. This results in the Core-2-Duo outperforming a faster Dual Core in every benchmark.
There are no benchmarks between an ARM processor and the older Pentium II or Pentium III that I know of. Even though the ARM processor in the Nexus One might be faster than some Pentium II or Pentium III processor what about calculation/instructions per cycle? What about BUS speed and transfer bandwidth? Is the ARM a true 32 bit processor? How about L1 cache? All theses things are a determining factor in overall system speed. Anyone only using clock speed to gauge the CPU performance means that person doesn’t quite get it.
There can't possibly be that many job openings in this field. This is about as silly as Unv Florida cranking out tons of degrees in marine biology when the reality is that there are less than 1000 of these specialty jobs in the US.
Nonsense, a marine biology degree will allow the holder to work in any environment that calls for a general science degree or biology degree. It would allow to the holder to apply to medical school, dental school, veterinary school, etc.
I would guess a degree in video game design can possible allow the graduates to work in jobs that requires animation, graphic design, etc. I would see them working in game design companies, ad agencies, movie studios, web design, you name it. Degrees in animation and game design have been around for 15 years or more from established universities; so, it appears that there is some value to those degrees. About 12 years ago I wanted to do a Masters in Animation at Florida International University.
Sockets are created to be as cheap as possible while supporting the cpu in question. If it wasn't for lack of configuration options and replacement of faulty parts, we would be buying our cpus soldered to motherboards.
Actually at one time CPUs came soldered onto the motherboards and if you needed to upgrade your CPU you had to know how to desolder the CPU from the board and solder the new CPU back on. Ahh, the good old days.
I think that is the point: the ticket is NOT going to court. It is going to collections/credit reporting agency. I would say that you can dispute those items on your report very easily, and they have to have proof that you were responsible for the transaction.
I misunderstood what he meant then. I thought that he was going to fight the ticket in traffic court. However, it's not going to make a difference because the law states that in that situtation the owner of the vehicle is responsible. If he can prove that was not his car that ran the red light then he has a case.
That is because a parking ticket is a non-moving violation, and non-moving violations can be charged to a vehicle rather than a person.
Moving violations, such as running red lights, can only be charged to drivers.
Which law in which municipality in which state says that tickets for running a red light can only be given to drivers and not to the owners of the vehicles? Are you saying that all those millions of tickets given out over 20+ years in every state are illegal? Are you saying states can’t have laws that permit giving red light infraction tickets to owners of vehicles instead of the drivers?
At that time, I will simply hand it over to my wife and she will challenge the reporting agencies to provide proof that it was me driving the car, and that the debt is mine. Being unable to do that, they will be forced to drop it from my credit report.
Sometimes it is helpful to have a wife that specializes in US Bankruptcy law.
It appears that you got bad advice from your wife. Think about it. If it was that simply then every ticked issued by red light cameras would have to be dismissed. Is it any different than receiving a parking ticket. If your argument has merit then anyone who has a parking ticket can go to court and argue prove that I was the one who parked the car. The red light tickets are issued against the owner of the vehicle and not the driver. That’s why you don’t lose points on your license because they can’t prove you were the driver but as the vehicle’s owner you are financially responsible for that ticket. It sucks but that’s the law. If your only defense is “prove that I was the one driving” you will be wasting your time, effort and money because the judge will rule against you in less than five minutes. The only way that you will beat it is to prove that issuing you the ticket when it can’t be proven that you were the driver is illegal and good luck with that.
Yeah when I saw that I just started laughing. I'm not thrilled with the iPad, but this "review" is just lamer than a Nomad.
The review was hardly worth the effort. The iPad is squarely aimed at the E-Reader market and yet the reviewer didn't review the iPad E-Reader's capability. I would have liked to know how it handles PDF documents and books and what about EPUB. I guess I have to wait for a real review to find out.
They don't need to download the entire file from you just parts of it to prove that you are engaging in copyright infringement. The courts give them that leeway two or three years ago. So, they can join the swarm download bits from everyone and sue them all, and it will hold up in court as long as they can prove that the individual bits are video files.
I remember a long time ago about a story where Amazon charged more to its returning customers than new ones through a cookie like that.
Anyone has remembers this as well?
I never heard of that. Besides, why would Amazon need to rely on a browser's cookie to identify returning customers when Amazon requires customers to have an account with them and be logged in before purchases are made?
It's not really news. Bing is just a rebranding of MSN Search. In June 2007, MSN had a spike of 16% market share (http://blog.compete.com/2007/07/09/june-search-share-msn-live-google-yahoo-ask/). Given the huge marketing behind Bing as well as the conversion of practically all search engines on every site that has anything to do with Microsoft, I would say, meh, no big deal.
Thank you for pointing that out. MSN search had a market share between 8%-10%; since MSN Search is now called Bing then I would expect Bing to have the same market share as its parent. In other words, Bing has inherited MSN Live market share. Move along nothing to see here.
"Thats what i love about this, I dont feel like im watchin yet another McGuiver episode or can predict the ending by watching the first few minutes

You are basing a lot of assumptions on a pilot episode. let's wait and see if they will fall back to the old tried and true stuff.
past and "primitive" societies would have exploited or would exploit nature as thoroughly as we do, anyway, were it not for limitations of populations and technology.
Native cultures were famous for "slash and burn" agriculture, possibly the most destructive farming method around that leeches all the nitrates out of the soil in just a few years, forcing the farmer to keep moving (and destroying his surrounding jungle). Crop rotation was a European invention.
What nonsense. Do you even know what slash and burn is and why it was used? Slash and burn was a technique used in tropical climates (it was also used in Europe) to fertilize the soil. In tropical climates plants, trees and crops grow year round this depletes the nutrients in the soil quickly. Since, fertilizers have only been around 100 years or so to replenish the soil the farmers had to âoeslashâ the foliage on the land and âoeburnâ it. They then leave it for nature to re-fertilize it while they farm a different plot of land. Eventually when the current land needs to fertilize they will slash and burn it and go back to the previous land that was fertilized by slashing and burning. This method is not very efficient but if you donâ(TM)t have fertilizer itâ(TM)s the only game in town.
Europe didnâ(TM)t have that problem because of winter. Crops canâ(TM)t grow in winter. This means that European farm lands are idle for 5 to 6 months a year which slows soil from degrading. Also, the winter climate kills most foliage which in turn fertilizes the land for the spring.
1KW ~= 1.34 HP
200KW ~= 268HP
400HP equivalent?
They need to explain that a bit better in the article and on the product website
I don't think it's a literal conversion. Perhaps the performance of a 200KW motor is equivalent to a 400 HP piston driven motor. As someone who was into drag racing many years ago I can tell you from experience that you need about 400 HP motor to push a 2400 pound car from 0-60 MPH in 4 seconds. If a 200 KW electric motor can do 0-60 MPH in 4 seconds then that is equivalent to a 400 HP piston driven motor.
AFAIK Amazon clearly wants to have text-to-speech enabled for all books. It's the publishers (and their threat to remove works if speech is enabled) you should be mad at.
If Amazon wants us to direct our ire towards the publishers, then they should have come clean about these flags before selling the Kindle. Except, wait... then it would have flopped, and hard. Instead, they pulled a bait and switch fraud on their customers.
Actually Amazon has come clean about that. If you go to Amazon's website and read the features dealing with text to speech of the Kindle it says that the rights holders may disable that function. As a matter of fact I pasted a part of their description of the text to speech feature of the Kindle DX.
"Kindle DX can read to you. With its Text-to-Speech feature, Kindle DX can read books, blogs, magazines, and newspapers out loud to you, unless the book's rights holder made the feature unavailable."
They certainly can ship a browser that is not married to the operation system. The fact that they tied Internet Explorer to the operation system is what started this whole mess. If Microsoft removes the browser from the operation system then every PC maker can ship their pc with a browser of their choice. Those who build their own PC can get their browser of choice on a disk and install it just as they would the operation system in most cases.
I have to agree with you. When I read it I came to the same conclusion that the article makes no sense, because in developed countries the average man and woman is procreating at a later age each generation. Even in developing countries this trend holds. Men and women who procreate after the age of 30 increases the potential for genetic mutation to pass on to their offspring.
However, the article may be right for the wrong reasons. Human evolution may be slowing down due to the mixing of populations. There aren't any isolated populations outside of a few South American, African and South Asian tribes. The planet is one big melting pot.
Tim sweeney said 10 years or so ago the GPU would be integrated into the CPU, it hasn't happened.
Isn't Intel working on integrating the GPU and CPU? Hence, the monthly statements by Nvidia that they are not afraid of Intel. With the development of multi core CPU it is now possible to economically integrate the GPU into the CPU. I expect in about 2 years we will see the first multi core CPU with an integrated GPU from Intel. This would make Sweeney prediction about 10 years early. I guess he is a futurist.
I don’t know how they define the term “practically identical” because HFCS has 10% more fructose than sucrose per gram. I am sorry but in my book something that is 10% different is not practically identical. They are closely related but not practically identical. Not to mention, the fructose and glucose molecules in sucrose are bonded together. So, your stomach has to break down sucrose before the glucose and fructose can be absorbed. Not so with HFCS. The fructose and glucose in HFCS are not bonded together and is digested much quicker than sucrose.
Phone resolutions are nowhere near the resolution of multi-display setups, in fact they can't even match one modern display yet. So i'd say that's quite a long way off, not to mention you'd need touchscreen monitors otherwise you'd have to be simulating touch input with a mouse.

Dodging the easy car analogy, the iPhone is a partner who knows what you want, instead of someone who can offer anything you want.
A better way of putting it is.
Dodging the easy car analogy, the iPhone is a partner who knows what you want, instead of someone who can offer anything you MIGHT want.
