If you're going to ask the question "What is the best sci fi movie ever"... you should probably ask a sample set that represents the population, not just one that represents a (rather geeky) magazine's reader base...
That'd be like taking a sample of what browser/. users have and saying those results fit the entire world...
Opening the case, particularly on a laptop, means you're liable for any damages. Also, I'm surprised that the MFG covered a broken AC jack anyway, since those break under "normal wear & tear" and are not usually caused by manufacturer defect.
there are probably some efficiencies in the business model of an internet transaction (aka mail order) that allow reduced pricing over the same branded retail stores
I would imagine that often they recoup the cost difference through shipping & handling. Not always, though, surely there are "free shipping" offers sometimes.
Also, accessories such as the converter you mentioned are marked up at a FAR higher rate than the big-box products usually are. Often time 200 - 300% above their company cost.
I don't know about you, but when I was hourly, my 15 minute breaks were paid. I'm not sure what the law says, but as another poster pointed out, these kinds of laws are state laws, not federal. It's possible that Google is taking the "lowest common denominator" and applying it to all of their locations, since they have an office in Michigan now, where labor laws are quite strong compared to many other states. The summary doesn't give enough info to make sense, but there are some other rules that go into this.
If I were a google employee, the part that would bug me the most is that they are apparently changing some salaried employees over to hourly. Ouch, man.
I do agree that it's not very newsworthy, though, companies do this all the time.
Well, my opinion is that if you're running w2k or wxp then you probably have no compelling reason to upgrade. However, if you pick up or build a new machine, requiring a new license of your OS, you may as well upgrade since it is roughly the same price. There are a couple of nice new features that you'd probably enjoy. The one I use the most is the search option in the start menu. It is very handy. It is not worth spending $200-$500 on an upgrade, but if you're spending the money anyway, it's worth looking at.
It's not so much a "must-have" upgrade, it's a "might-as-well" upgrade.
It's amazing the kind of crappy responses there are to this post... The reason people don't want linux is a combination of the parent's observation and the attitude of the linux users, which is very much evident in the two dozen less-than-positive responses to it.
Google's application-server-thin-client model is much less burdensome. Open and Free systems have much better "real" support
It concerns me that you think this is open source. Google's apps are closed just as much as MS's. They are also not free, at least not to the degree that the FAA would be using them. Also, Google will be the only company offering support for their apps, whereas there are many windows experts out there already who will offer their services to you.
Finally, the last thing I want is to have our government entirely dependant on an ADVERTISING company such as google.
It's kinda funny to watch all these people on Slashdot try to rally against Microsoft. Meanwhile the world moves on...
No average joe computer user will ever pick linux over windows as long as linux looks like something out of the late 80s. Mac, maybe. Linux, not a chance in hell.
Update the UI and put UIs on top of the configuration files... or better yet, set up some sensible defaults from a USER's point of view so the config files are a non-issue.
Also, stop wasting so much time trying to punch at Microsoft from a silly web forum, and spend that time working on the items above. Then maybe people will take all of you seriously.
And editors, remember, bad publicity is still publicity... I think you're hurting your cause more than you're helping it... then again, I'm sure you're making plenty of money from all the page views these MS articles generate... Particularly from the MS ads you often have right underneath the summaries.
For those of you with itchy mod points burning a hole in your Firefox sessions, please read the points I've made before you get defensive. Maybe you, too, could do something worthwhile (which modding is not) and help your cause a little.
Unable to determine IP address from host name for unknown server name This means that:

Check if the address is correct.
That's why it's important to RTFS. Yes, I know they can be unbearable sometimes, but give it some effort.
I thought I was the only one who noticed that...
I call it "Realizing a mistake" and these people call it "flip flopping."
Perhaps if GWB hadn't used such an idiotic defense on Kerry, he would at least not be afraid to change his mind over some of the stupid things he's gotten our people into... Now he can't change his mind or he'd be a "flip flopper" too.
And that's exactly what most users are doing. I'm sure the Linux supporters out there appreciate how quickly you have obsoleted all of their work to promote linux.

So when some random website crashes IE, it's IE's fault... but when one crashes Opera, it's the site's fault. Bitter much?
If you give a mouse a cookie....

This *is* slashdot...
So, once I do that, all of my hardware will just work?

Ok, I think I've got a box sitting around at home that could handle it. What are the steps to getting this up and running?

You must not have any sales reps... They buy their own equipment generally.
...and vote...
The page you are directed to is a function of your DNS server. For instance, I get a similar message when I visit the site you mentioned on IE7:

That's a good idea -- why don't you taunt them so they'll come after you next?
