I am going to bid for this contract-
I have developed a search engine that plays music when you load the homepage, is inaccesable between 6-10 pm due to a lack of bandwidth, reeks of emo-cutter desperation, and has little icons of music notes moving around the whole page so the links are hard to find/click. I am thinking we will be a good fit....
Googling "Search Engine" returns 2,190,000,000 results.
The top 5 results?
1.Dogpile Web Search Home Page

3.Lycos
4.MetaCrawler Web Search Home Page - MetaCrawler
5.Mamma Metasearch search engines on the Internet.
Google is 8th!!!!
Granted DogPile and Mamma include Google results, but it appears Google is no longer relevant. In today's world, you are judged by your Google ranking. Google is 8th when you google Search Engines. They are a has been....
How long until they DRM our thoughts?
I mean with singing sensation Meatloaf trying to lay claim to the phrase "Bat out of Hell" http://www.playfuls.com/news_0000516_Meatloaf_My_B at_Out_Of_Hell.html
I am going to trademark "like um" and then be rich, I am talking crazy boy band rich....
You hit the nail on the head- why would someone go out of their way and be hassled to be legal. (Paying taxes aside)
I don't mean to be captain obvious here, but when stealing music rates a 1 on the hardness scale and buying it rates a 10 on the hardness scale, how will people get their music? Maybe it it because I am not the president of a record company or an RIAA bigwig, but my little brain can't understand why record companies and the RIAA think that making their product hard to acquire is good for business...
Shit- will it just be illegal to lie on dating sites, or will this apply to the real world as well? Am I going to get arrested for saying I am an MD when I'm out at the bar? I hope not, because that line works sooooooo well.
Hang loose mother goose! I was being sarcastic-
Of course the "labs" where meth is cooked are not full of Bunsen Burners and white lab coats.
Don't be that guy who responds to sarcasm or joking with seriousness!
On a related note, there are several counties in Ohio (where I live) that are making great strides in shutting down the meth labs. The cooks have some knowledge of chemistry, as they have taken meth production, which used to be able to be detected from miles away by the odor, and thus relegated to the country, into the cities because they have been able to control the smells.
It says something about the issue that 99.9999999% (not a scientifically obtained number of course) of the posts you read on Slashdot are pro-net neutrality... I can't think of any other issue where slashdotters, who usually have opinions ranging from alpha to omega, agree.
When it becomes illegal to sell used products, we will know that teh corporations have won. Wouldn't Ford/GM other car companies love it if you could only buy new cars?
Sony would also like us to only sleep with virgins too, right?
The problem is, governments can't help tehmselves when it comes to taxes. It may start as 1 cent, but it won't stay there. Remember, when social security was implemented, it was 1%. It is of course no longer 1%
Money to legislators is like cake to a fat kid.
Perhaps it isn't relevant, but I take anyone who attacks a competitor with a grain of salt-
A better practice would be to praise your own product, and politely tell why it is better than the others. That is, if you believe in your product.
Of course MS is going to go after OpenOffice- it means lost $$$$$ to them....
No it was a typo- you are correct- And it is obnoxious when people try and correct someone else and then make an error themselves.
My point is this- there are terms that when misused cause confusion. When some guy in marketing talks about scalability, he is going to confuse a tech guy who knows what scalability really is...
I am extra irritated because my boss is a blowhard who uses the term ROI all the time, and I went along on a sales call with him and he was using the term, and the person we were calling on got all confused.
Anyhow- way to catch my typo. I need to lern to spel.
Good points, however you lose credibility when you misuse business speak. RIO is not just an acronym to mean "Return on Investment" in the sense of how the phrase is used by everyday people. ROI is a specific finance equation that is:
Average Income (Before interest and taxes) divided by average operating assets.
It is used by some companies as a benchmark to measure managers etc.
Sorry- misuse if accounting terms is a pet peeve of mine. It also contributes to communication problems, when one person who doesn't know what ROI means is using it incorrectly, and those of us who do are trying to figure out what you mean...
Like it or not, it isn't censorship if you agree with the decision... At least that is the usual thinking I hear.
Seriously though, is Google also nixing links to the Davinci Code, which is as offensive to some Catholics and anti-Mohammed things are to muslims?
Um- do we really need legislation to restrict use of SSNs? I thought that the law already said that SSNs are only for, well, social security... Why dont we enforce laws before making up new ones?
I went to a state University for 2 years before transferring to a private one. At the state school everything was all about the SSN. One every test, you had to put your SSN...
Unions have good and bad aspects to them
That being said, at one of my first tech jobs, I was the newest person in the office. After I had been there a year, they did a layoff. I survived, I wouldn't have in a union because they would have gone by seniority. The people they got rid of were mostly the unproductive people.
But the real deal is this- if tech employees unionize, you will see tons and tons of jobs go overseas, and more tech places in right to work states.
One funny story- I worked at a newspaper website right after college, and they would send the stories over at 430 am from the unionized production dept, and the guy who sent them would leave for home right after. I would get into work at 530, and look for the feed. If the guy had forgot to send the stories, or had messed it up, I had to call a manager at home and wake him up (I couldn't call the production dept because I am was nonunion, so I could only talk to management) The manager would have to call the union guy at home, he would have to drive back into work (making OT) and send the feed. No one else was allowed to do his job, even though it was very simple to send the stories. So the site wouldn't be populated with stories until around 830 am. I hear that the process is now completely automated (this was back in 1999), but how ridiculous is that? It screwed all the people who liked to read the paper online first thing in the AM when they got to work....
Anyway, unions have clearly been great for GM and Ford!!!!
I agree to a point-
People have riduculous expectations. For example, they want to be able to buy a Dell for $300 that would have been considered a supercomputer 5 years ago (exaggeration) and then are upset when it has crappy support.
People want products cheaply- which makes margins thin, which takes away money for "better" employees....
There are still places around where you can get good service and a decent price. There is an independent electronics store near me that sells TVs and such. I was talking to a salesguy, who was super nice and knew about everything there is to know about TVs, and he said that people just assume that because they are small that they are more expensive. The fact is, they were w/in $5 of Best Buys prices on about everything... ($5 on $1000 items, and actually cheaper for some things.)
What is serfing the internet? Is that where you are bound to a small portion of the internet and forced to write code? (Hoping the Mods know enough history to think that is funny)
I don't want to start a feud!
Resistance is Feudal!
Thanks, I'll be here all week.
My point is that many b to c (retail) salespeople are horrid.
Obviously professional salespeople who sell B to B are different. The salesperson who sells million dollar computer systems to industries and pulls in 500k in commisions each year is going to be more knowledgeable/professional that the guy at Best Buy making $8 an hour.

Ben Franklin responds from the grave:
He who gives up useability for a little temporary security deserves neither usability nor security.
I couldn't read the article. They wanted me to type CapTcha. Or was it Cap7cha? Oh well?

Um, in all seriousness, it seems like the only home chemists these days are cooking meth.

Haven't you seen the cartoon where the chicken and egg are lying in bed smoking cigarettes, and the chicken says "I guess that answers that"

No, not Gannett- but it was a big daily that is owned by a big consortium.
