    Hey nice sig man !
For the ones who never heard about the genius from Belgium called Noel Godin, the man responsible of bakery crime on Bill Gates, I urge you to go to his official web site :

Those guys are looking for team members in the US and Europe, so go and join the bakery alliance !
It had to be said, although it's completely off-topic.

I've been using it for a while, and I'm really happy with it ; there's a new version that works with multipls cameras too.
Now the problem is that it runs on Windows, so the solution may be to build a waterproof PC-104 system with a video capture module such as this one and plug it to some sort of radio-transmitter or cellphone.
As processing the video captures requires quite some power, you won't be able to use the lower-end PC-104 CPU modules unfortunately, but you must be able to make a system for a reasonnable price.

Amen, brother ! I too have quite a few PCs and would need a very good reason to switch to another platform when I got much software and hardware already. Like many other PC users, I would have bought a Next if Jobs hadn't been so stupid to make it die, just because it was a wonderful machine with great development tools. However OSX is not attractive enough to me to decide to buy a Mac : Linux supports all my hardware, has a great interface (Gnome), plenty of applications available (and Kylix looks very promising too), and maybe even more important, I can CUSTOMIZE my system the way I want to, I really hate not being able to do what I want, the way Mac OS was designed (may be good for kids or people who don't want to know how computers work, but that's definitely not for the majority of /. users I guess).
Apple is basically dying, and the only thing to stop it would be to cut the crap and think of the huge majority of computer users, that is, PC users, and make some software/hardware available for them. I work for a major software company, and there's not a single Mac here, everybody would talk about Macs as a big farce. Until Apple stops jerking off on their blue translucid plastic, I don't see how the situation would be different but I wish them good luck.

Thanks for the link, however I don't really see how you can create UIs easily with Quicktime, I guess it's the same problem as Flash, you have to make you own UI components (fields, tables, ...) by hand, which is kind of expensive in terms development time.

  24. Re:JPython, etc on Alternatives To Applets On The Client Side? · · Score: 1

You're right, there are quite a few other languages available you can use to produce Java Bytecode, such as Scheme, Eiffel or Lisp (more here).
However, having a VM run inside the browser (with the Java plugin or not), consumes much resources and the startup time is a little long (several seconds on even a decent computer).
That's right, I don't really mind about what language to use, it could either be Python or Flash script, but it should be lightweigtht, portable and ideally should come with a bunch of standard "advanced" components (formatting fields, tables, trees,...).
I know it's tough requirements, but there must be a damn product/project down here that meets them, isn't it ?
