    Why don't you google "payback period hybrid". Payback period on the Prius and Camry Hybrid is between 2-3 months at $4/gallon. Also, hybrids are being sold used for the same price as new with the current price of fuel. Hybrids will have an almost immediate payback when the price of gas hits $5/gallon.

    NiMH aren't as prone to thermal runaway as Lithium Ion, and Lithium Polymer batteries haven't been out long enough for automakers to be able to warrant a vehicle with them.

    Don't forget transportation, as we're making leaps and bounds in the first world towards electrification of transportation. If Nanosolar were to get their product down to $1/Watt, it would make sense for a large non-profit (B&M Gates Foundation) to step in and put several solar generating facilities in Africa. Give the power away at first, but than slowly raise the price to a sustainable level as the quality of life increases.

    I wish I hadn't already replied to someone to mod you up. This is very true. Example: Africa. Their situation is caused by a lack of natural resources to begin with (notably, clean water) and governments that come and go.

    I don't tell the gas station how much to charge me for pop, chips, etc. They charge what the market will bear. I don't tell Hollister what to charge me for shorts/shirts, they charge what the market will bear. How is this any different? If you don't like what they charge for text messaging, DON'T USE IT (or switch providers).

    Drilling in ANWR and the Gulf would take 10 years to bring online. Also, the oil supplied would only bring down the price of gas by 7-10 cents/gallon.

    You are not the target market. High-end, bleeding edge enterprise users are who this is targeted at, and those who will spend whatever it costs to get that sort of performance. Consumers are cheap, so they'll get the benefits last.

    Check out the new locomotive GE built that's a hybrid.

    The energy dissipated in braking a 207-ton locomotive over the course of a year is enough to power 160 households for that year. The hybrid locomotive will capture that energy and use it to produce more horsepower and reduce emissions and fuel use.

    It's actually pretty cool. The "battery" is made up of several thousand pound molten salt cells, which can deliver over 2,000 horsepower in under a second.

    Keep in mind that Tesla started engineering their battery pack almost 3 years ago. Battery technology has advanced by leaps and bounds (specifically, Lithium-variant cells) within the last 3 years.

    I'd like to live in France for 3-6 months with my wife (she loved it there when we visited). The scenario you described sound fantastic. Any suggestions for small towns to take up residence in for half a year or so?

    Charge time on the Tesla Roadster is 4 hours using a 90amp/240V circuit (although the car draws only 70amps during charging, 90amp circuit is due to NEC tolerances).
