I agree, it reminds me of the fact (or myth, i havent checked) that safes are rated in minutes - how long it'd take to compromise - and not advertised as unbreakable. If this announcement does mean the end of PS3's security it's not a fail - it survived 4 years and an army of determined hackers.
No, 2011 will finally be the year of the Linux Desktop. But entire world and dog will fail to notice because they got rid of their desktop and will be playing with their Apple/Microsoft Tablets.
Spec/Requirements, it's all the same. The Boss/MD does not give a shit about Joels system. Testers? don't need testers just need the coders to not write bugs. Specs? There's no plan! anything that costs time and money (like documentation) that's out the door.
We have "tasks". e.g. Add a button on form X that does Y when Z. 500 of these "agile" cycles later and the software is big, slow, and buggy as fuck and you need to load 25 projects simultaneously because of all the freaky dependencies. Because there never was a plan. I'm fairly certain a lot of software is written this way. And no. We can't refactor it because that would take 6 months alone and no one bothered to write down each requirement/spec as they went along and we're not allowed technical documentation because the boss says that if he can't understand it it's to be deleted. And the boss is paying our salary and doesnt want to wast 6 months of cash when he wants to be able to stroll up tomorrow and say "I want a new button on form X that does A when B but only if C is D and the user is wearing blue socks".
They pay me plenty at least. And yes, it was like that when I got here.
I really enjoyed Tron:Legacy (and recently watched the original to build up to it). I came away reminded of how I felt watching films like The Last Starfighter, Flight of the Navigator and War Games. Made me feel 25 years younger for a couple of hours and I was very grateful for it.
Did everyone else forget that this is a Disney film?
Glenn Beck said the nn ruling will require him and his kind to provide time for opposing views on all his broadcasts, (making the broadcasts 'neutral'), which seems like a bad thing.
Glenn Beck is full of shit.
"Netruality" in the sense that the FCC are talking is nothing to do with right vs left and everything to do with comcast vs netflix and which one I choose to use my broadband connection for. If the connection is neutral i can choose either, if the connection is biased then i have to choose one over the other
You're doing it wrong. Type "sl" then use the arrow keys to find "www.slashdot.org" amongst all the crap you mentioned and click it. The VERY NEXT time you type "sl" "www.slashdot.org" will be the top suggestion.
When they met and realized the same guy had done the same thing to someone else they realized that what happened to them was not an "accident", that they didn't somehow misunderstand, that their self doubt was unjustified and that this guy needed reporting.
Alternately, being a victim of a very personal crime they were doubting, questions and unsure about the circumstances. Essentially in a kind of denial. Shock and stress can do that to you.
Imagine something a bit less severe, first imagine you're not super confident or teeming with testosterone, you were in a car accident, it was clearly the other persons fault but they talked their way out of the situation. You carried on with your life and picked up the pieces, sorted the car, and started to believe that maybe it was just an accident, where no one was at fault. Then you meet someone who had the same experience, with the exact same other driver...
Back to real life: When they got together and discovered the same thing had happened to someone else they realized their doubts were unfounded and gained the confidence to go to the authorities.
If you paid for 10Mb/s you should be able to USE 10Mb/s to torrent to your heart's content. If you using all of the bandwidth you paid for is causing disruption to your neighbours then the ISP is doing it wrong. they either need to upgrade their kit or only sell 2MB/s in the first place.
Instead the cableco/ISP wants to still sell you the "10Mb/s" package, and plaster that number all over the billboards and tv spots in giant letters with tiny small print along the lines of "certain services may be limited or subject to an upgrade fee". Those certain services will be anything that produces VOD, not because of the bandwidth issues, but because they compete with the cableco/IPS's own VOD offerings. This last point has NOTHING to do with QoS or traffic management or bittorrent and everything to do with exploitation, especially in places where they have a state granted monopoly on wired broadband - and they will sue anyone on those exact grounds who tries to start a company to compete.
Obvisouly they're kicking and screaming, they've invested a ton of cash in campaign contributions (read: bribes) to get them into a position where they can have a monopoly on broadband AND cable - on eyes and ears that they can sell to advertisers, and now the "big government" wants to regulate them so they can't fuck you in the ass with that monopoly. To them that's unfair and Not The American Way.
You know what, I LIKED that the plot and writing hadn't evolved past the 80's. Took me right back to being aged approximately 10 and watching films like War Games and Flight of the Navigator. And to get that feeling back for a couple of hours was worth every penny.
Did everyone else fail to notice that this is a DISNEY film?
Interesting that you mention Inception. Chris Nolan is the master (in a good way) of hyper cutting. And a lot of directors could learn how to do it properly by watching what he does. Watch something like Insomnia and you'll see how he uses the cutting to speed up the passage of time..... Walking through rocks towards Bridge. Crossing Bridge. Holding Door Handle. Inside cabin through door. Looking around cabin.... he's cutting as fast as you can read that but it works. I think other directors get out the scissors thinking they're emulating it but it's a finer art than it appears upon first inspection.
I agree. Actually thought Wildes acting is brilliant in this and unfortunately sure to be overlooked, she pulls the young teenagerish curiosity, naivety and energy off to a tee. But in the end I also preferred the blonde:)
Pre Clinton there was a blanket ban on serving in the military if you were homosexual. Clinton wanted to repeal this but didn't have the numbers in Congress and/or the Senate so DADT was the best he could get through: A compromise that essentially allowed anyone to serve in the military, regardless of sexual orientation.
Obama's drive to repeal it is simply the next step along the path, by removing the compromise in favour of equality and openness.
Me too, i actually said "holy shit!" out loud after the suffocating incident. Admittedly the setup for the episode itself seemed a bit run of the mill but then they turned the cliche around. In fact they did that in quite a few episodes, just when you thought "i've seen this before on x-trek" some different shit would hit the fan.
Just hope they have enough spare time, resources and episodes to finish it all pleasantly (or indeed, unpleasantly). But at least this way it wont end up being dragged out for years and feel like the middle half of Lost:)
The logic extension to your post is that no one actually owns any of these. They're just lined up in the street where the bus stop used to be. If there wasn't one there you'd call it like an elevator.
On the other hand, this is close to my vision but mine is PRT - super-light rail with carriages that seat only up to 6 people (and/or one wheelchair). Like a fleet of automated, computer controlled london cabs.
They just need a mechanism to keep it on google's servers (though ideally i'd like to see the cloud fully federated) and encrypted. You may need to use public/private key encryption to protect your login but the advantage is that you as a business can pay $$$ to google instead of $$$$ for a proper server room and a colo and the salaries of a bunch of sysadmins.
Google are trying to push the singularity. And putting some force behind it:
Imagine your house/workplace/school gets flooded/burnt down/infested by zombies. No need to send in the sysadmins, just grab a Chrome OS device from anywhere and log in. There are your files, folders, email, applications, right in front of you. And you didn't have to call tech support.
Imagine you are flying to another country to give a presentation, may be business related, maybe you've been invited to give a talk somewhere but they want you there in person. No need to take your laptop. No need to get it through customs at either end. Just grab any Chrome OS box and log in. Your shortcut-to-presentation link is right there on your desktop.
Maybe you're visiting some large city in some far away land and you're paranoid about getting robbed. So don't take your laptop or smartphone, but hey, wonder into an internet cafe, or use the terminal in your hotel room. Log in as you, bam, all your stuff is there.
sounds a lot like science fiction. Google is pushing it to be so normal it's mediocre
The first time I had a "real" job outside uni and got a proper Windows Domain login I was surprised that when I logged into a machine in the conference room as myself my desktop, applications and files were'nt there. Now in a sensible linux/unix type environment that might have happened but it was a wake up call for me.
Now at home I have three computers, one is a laptop. And my desktop, browser bookmarks, installed apps all vary between the three, my email and a lot of files are on a central server but I'm a techy geeky guy, that's to be expected. Chrome OS will work wonders for people who aren't techy geeky guys. Want to upgrade your laptop? log out of your old one, log into your new one, everything is just as you left it.
Also, imagine you are on vacation and chose not to lug your laptop along, walk into an internet cafe, log onto a chrome machine, There's all your apps/emails/files. This also works if you are heading over to another business for a meeting. Or a presentation. Or your office gets flooded, bombed, burnt down. Walk up to any Chrome OS device. Log in. Carry on.
Suddenly you don't need to lug around a laptop anywhere anymore. Ever.

Really good merge of various sources into an almost complete set of chat sessions

Yeah saying "Man" every other word. Seems like a good few reviewers around the net have failed to realize that Flynn was El Duderino Originale

the END OF LINE club
Now get out.

It implements all those using standard meatbag protocol
I really like SG:U but someone please award parent mod points for making me laugh really really fucking hard

$5 and it's not good enough!?!
On the other hand. On iTunes there's one review complaining that it should be free and ad supported. Sigh

If it was so bad why is the 21st century's biggest game franchise heavily inspired by it? http://cyclomedia.co.uk/blog/?Halo_is_Tron
